Tuba Skinny - Harlem Joys

Tuba Skinny winds down French Quarter Fest weekend with a set busking on a hot Monday in the French Quarter. I believe this is the first time I’ve heard them perform this particular song.

my favorite place to see TS perform is in the street. busking simply has a certain open spontaneous relaxed vibe to it even if every passer-by doesn't stop to listen..

After a crisp count down, Shaye and the band tear into this tune by Willie ''The Lion'' Smith 1935....The front line with their usual outstanding solos......Shaye at 2:26 is a joy (no pun intended)....In the trad jazz world you would be hard pressed to find another group that can get into a tune like Tuba Skinny.......................................

Many thanks for capturing this for us, Randy. Yet another tune added to Tuba Skinny's massive repertoire. It seems that it was first recorded in 1935 by Willie 'The Lion' Smith and His Cubs; and that the composers were Smith himself, Williams and Bishop. Presumably Williams was his washboard player - W. Williams. Anyone know who 'Bishop' was? Fortunately for those of us who like to study such things, this piece seems relatively straightforward - just one 32-bar theme [16 + 16] with no Introduction or Coda, played through eight times. Like the original Willie Smith recording, it seems to be in E flat, but with quite a few interesting harmonies in the chord progression.

Clarence Williams was the publisher and ipso facto one of the composers. Bishop was Walter Bishop, Sr.
