“Opportunity!”!! Haha every flower lover can relate. Thank you for putting the names & pics up of the plants. I screenshot them for my planning/shopping. I’ve learned a lot from your quality videos.
I too like seeing the plant names on the videos. I pause the video and Google the plant to see if I can grow it in my landscape. He provides great tips & a wealth of care information.
That vitex will be a beauty. It's nice to have trees that bloom. I like landscapes that offer more than a string of annuals in a line across the front of the house.
Good channel. A little too much included in one video. Came here for the title on trimming the Vitex. This could help your channel grow. If you made this into several specific videos.
I have a Shoal Creek Vitex that I've trained into a multi-trunk tree. I use it as a focal point in my garden, because of the trunks and deep purple coloring. Really great alternative to crepe myrtles in my 7b South Carolina garden.
I took my master gardeners class last year and I love your channel because you share important information, trimming of branches is an example along with so many tips! Thanks 🌼🐝
I would like to know how to keep a vitex shorter. Mine had grown so tall that I could only see the blooms from a window in my stairwell. I want to keep its blooms at no more than about 7 feet in the future.
love this time of year ... the clean up and pruning are so very theraputic and I believe the plants appreciate the care ... what a difference pruning up the Vitex made - and the opportunity for new plants - yee haw !!!! thanks for taking us on this walk around the garden. I'm inspired to get out in my own yard and do some clean up !!!
June, I am in Oklahoma and we too are finally starting to cool down and hopefully get some much needed rain. It's been a long, hot summer. But you're probably used to that. Cheers!
I have a very large vitex in my backyard. It is a little too close to my house and I have to trim a couple of times a year to keep branches off the roof. I love it though and it is worth the effort. Zone 8a/b
Jim, I would like to see you identify a spent bloom head from newly formed bloom head on Vitex. I went out to dead head mine as I read you could get more blooms and was confounded! thanks. (usually I am not so ferhoodled)
Looking for info about Vitex and here it was, at one if my favorite channels! 😁 I started Vitex from seed, I got it for my horse, my mare, it gets her calmer and more harmonious, but it’s really expensive so I threw some seeds in a pot and watered it. And waited. And waited. It took almost 9 weeks to get seedlings! First year they grew to about 10cm, second year about 30 cm and this season the one I got left of that batch was about 60 cm. So I’m really envious that you had to have A SAW to prune! Anyway, thanks for a informative video!
That summertime blues vitex looks like it has every intention to grow into a 15+ foot tall tree. Assuming the label is right about it not producing any seeds it still has a place for sure, but it isn't a dwarf vitex as the label claims. Maybe only 5 ft tall in Chicago where it was bred for its cold hardiness but in the south it looks like a full sized vitex to me.
I have a vitex that’s at least 15’ tall. In the past, I cut it back hard in late winter. I missed it this year. What is the recommended pruning for vitex?
Please show how you prune your lemon abelias. I have several planted in my yard from last year they are still quite small but seems to grow rapidly. Thank you.
Your garden looks great! Is it hard keeping up with the deadheading on the zinnia's? I love that color. We noticed we haven't had very many butterflies this year either!
Great video! We have three vitexes in severe need of pruning. We live in south Mississippi. A couple questions: 1) Is it OK to prune now or when do you recommend? 2) Is there a maximum number of trunks you should allow to form the base if there is more than one ?
Wow, look at your vitex! Impressive how much it grew in a short time in your garden. I have had mine for approximately a decade and it's smaller. But, mine has a hard life. It is on a rocky hillside and usually gets no supplemental water during the 10 or so weeks each summer that we don't have rain. Obviously, it's tough to survive my conditions and it's a favorite of mine for that reason. This year I have been giving it some water so maybe it will grow a little more. Still, the rocky hillside isn't conducive to easy living.
Hello Jim, I don’t know if you could answer this question for me. I am also in 7B , however I’m in NYC 🤦🏼♀️ Why are our zones considered 7B when we are clearly so far away from each other and most definitely have weather climates? BTW I Recently came across an article that is labeling my area subtropical 🤯
Hi Jim, I planted two multi-trunk vitex this spring with the intent of training them into tree form. I have not touched them, although they have a lot of new growth. I remember you saying, in another context, that the lower limbs will feed the growth of the trunk, and I want strong, thick trunks on these. My thought was not to do any limbing up until next year. Any thoughts?!
Hi Jim! Thanks for all the wonderful videos and awesome info. Just curious, whatever happened to the snowball viburnum that you planted in your backyard? I haven't seen it in your videos.
Jim, couldn't you dig up the second Vitex & plant it elsewhere instead of continuing to cut it back? I have heard they are very tough. I have a Delta Blues that I rescued off the clearance rack for $7 last year. It looked dead after an early frost but the limbs were bendable and I kept faith & it came back for me this year. It's still small but the blooms are such a lovely color. Does your Vitex leave seedings? I've heard they can be invasive but I can't speak to that.
I have a clematis (double blue, I think) that is looking completely Chlorotic. I’m in zone 8a, coastal NC. This is the second season it’s been in the ground. Bloomed beautifully once and has had a few straggling blooms throughout the rest of the summer but the foliage is looking terrible! Any advice on what I could do to help it? Love your channel Jim!
I have a Yoshino weeping cherry tree. Just planted it this spring. Was mowing and accidentally caught one of the limbs and unfortunately broke it off. It is from the top part of the tree. It ripped it pretty good. My husband got out some zip ties and put the broken part back where it had been - trying to protect the wound. Should I put peat moss around the wound to help it heal, or will that just create an environment for rot? We cut the broken branch way back, so it didn't have the weight dragging it down. The leaves on the broken branch have turned brown (no surprise there). Is there a better way to protect the wound I created when that branch got caught in the mower? Thank you & Steph for all your invaluable information.
Just planted Florida sunshine illicium and expected it to be root bound. It wasn’t and the two main stems are laying horizontal. Would this be a case where a summer haircut to reduce weight of the plant would be helpful?
to the left of that box wood you briefly talked about at 6:15, is that coneflower with black seed heads? Mine turned black! So did my Denver Daisy rudbeckia. Why does this happen. I asked a retired Master gardner and she didn’t know
I have same issue, they all turning black. I thought that’s how it supposed to be since all of them doing it 🤷♀️ but now seeing your question I’m in doubts
"Look at all this new land!"
The treeforming rabbit 😂 Love it

Exactly!

All valuable information, for all levels of gardener from newbie to master gardeners. You’ll appreciate a lot more as you learn from his channel!!

For sure. Always been one of my favorites!

Wow, that's great. Thank you for following along!
I enjoy learning about maintenance especially pruning in the garden and you explain it all so well.
Thank you so much!

I'm eager to see how this front yard looks in the winter with the annuals gone.
My neighborhood in the low AZ desert finally has been getting some rain!!! Things here are looking good also!!! Love all your flowers!

This is the perfect video for me as I have plans to do this with 10 Vitex. Thank you!!
That vitex looks good as a tree. Thanks for the close ups of pruning.
I've had my Vitex since October 2021, so excited to give it its first trim. I too am planning on growing mine as a tree rather than a bush.
that caryopteris looks so much like dappled willow 🥰
It really does, but a bit more tame
Deb here, great video,. Thanks for showing how to maintain a vitex.

Beautiful tour as always. Laughed at the new "Opportunity" comment so true.
I normally have tons of caterpillars on my rue, I leave it to them to strip it every year. Haven't seen a single one this year
I never knew clematis bloomed so late into the summer! You really transformed that vitex! It’s great to acquire additional planting space!

Always informative and helpful! Thanks Jim and Stephanie!
Landscape has really come to life this year❤
I appreciate learning from you! I moved from FL to VA. & I am learning what works well in my new zone. Thank You!
Love everything in your top performers. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Always great videos👍❤️💐🥳🏆

How does the purple day dream lorepetalum compare to jazz hands? Is the former more cold hardy?
Great video! We have three vitexes in severe need of pruning. We live in south Mississippi. A couple questions:

Everyone I know that plants for the butterflies/monarchs has been worried as we have not seen them this year. Maybe they will come later than usual?
I have seen the monarchs but have not seen many caterpillars.

I’d love to know where you got your rain gauge/thermometer from, that’s just what I need.
Would this work with other Vitex? We only have V. negundo in my country.
does this hurt the tree

zone 8b Florida, every time I've planted vincas into the landscape the ants build mounds around them. any suggestions on why or what to do?
Is this Vitex the same as chaste tree? I was reading that they are invasive. Is that your experience?

Yes, but I would risk doing damage to the one I want to keep. They have grown together for a few years.
SO IS FALL OR SPRING BEST TIME TO PRUNE PERINEAL SHRUBS ETC.. please replywhen u can

I would probably tip prune it. They will a lot otherwise

Where do get your annual seeds from?
He has mentioned several places on the past. Johnny’s seeds, Park Seed
