I heard this song when I was in fifth grade, and I have been attempting for OVER A DECADE to figure out what classical piece it was that I heard. I've hummed the melody to numerous people over the years who have said "It sounds familiar but I can't place it."
I discovered this was the song today entirely by accident because of another video where somebody was playing various classical pieces and I almost threw my phone and shouted "THAT'S THE SONG!!!"

2:28 - 3:08 is such a powerful, yet underrated part. So many layers of instruments just piling on top of one another in a chaotic harmony that is just filled with that sense of epicness as if to usher in the dawn of the new world. And yet there is this feeling of longing and unbelonging - longing for ones homeland and knowing that, as great as the new world seems, it is not where one belongs. The same part is repeated in a much slower, lighter fashion from 7:22 - 8:08 and it's where this sense of longing really starts to shine through right before the finale.

According to this source: www.connollymusic.com/stringovation/stories-behind-dvo%C5%99%C3%A1ks-new-world-symphony it premiered on December 13, 1893, at sold-out Carnegie Hall. It also notes that the composer had to stand up and bow to thank the audience between the movements. That also implies that he was not conducting that night, although I would double-check that since the article doesn't get to any more depth about that. But with that being said, the audience at that particular night did not have the advantage of hearing the piece performed by Solti (or any other great conductor for that matter - I particularly enjoyed Gustavo Dudamel and Lenny Bernstein do this bit) beforehand so I believe so far as they were concerned, it was the best performance of this piece to that date. In short, I would also love to be there that night.

This is a terrific example of a symphony's finale. After it has stated its two main themes, right around 4:28 it brings back the main themes of the second and third, distinctly playing them in counterpoint to each other and informed by the fourth's new themes; then it seamlessly recalls the first into the mix, letting its themes build back into a restatement of the fourth again. Every movement's main themes return in the end.

Oh my gosh you just helped me solve long time mystery (by long time I mean 5 months) We did this movement in my high school symphony orchestra in my freshman year, we only did the fourth movement, and I had no idea about the other movements or had even heard them (or so I thought), about halfway through the song (starting at 4:28) I saw/heard parts from a different classical piece I had known for years and I remember thinking “why are these here, isn’t this already a classical piece?”. I saw your comment and thought “Hmm, is it possible that the classical piece is one of the other movements?” And listened to the other movements, when I got to the second movement, sure enough, there it was, it was the second movement of that same symphony the whole time, I was able to put 2 and 2 together, symphonies tent to call back to the other movements in the final movement and repeat stuff

This was playing on my cassette machine as I drove through the mountains of southern Colorado. The highway wound through rugged passes and each turn revealed epic vistas of pine-covered snow-capped peaks and wild rivers. After living on the edge of the Mohave Desert for years, the scenic views in the Rockies were overwhelming.

Honestly was brought to tears when this began because I had started the video not knowing what song I was listening to and was hit with a wave of nostalgia and the pure joy and pride of being a band nerd. I had first heard this song on Little Einsteins as a toddler and hadn’t heard it since. Now I can appreciate the music all that much more due to my experience with concert pieces.
