Hi Joe, I've noticed you use the ground beef, with rice and veggies often. You mentioned they were bland. During the video I noticed you had raisins. Once you reconstitute the beef/rice meal, add a box of raisins, then cook.
I'd also recommend trying a little soy sauce during the initial cooking of the beef and rice.
I enjoy your work. Keep it up, and thank you for it.
    Be well,

Add some taco seasoning to that ground beef recipe. Makes it far more yummy.

It might make him shit his pants if he's got IBS though - I don't even have IBS and that seasoning can give me some mean sharts.

Awesome videos, find they are educational and easy to watch,You watch 3 or 4 of his videos and you should be able to survive any conditions. His shelters rock and I like the fact that he talks to all of us through the camera like we are there and not narrating and occasionally looking at the camera. 2 thumbs up!

I just visited the Forty Creek distillery this weekend. Couldn't remember where I had seen Copper Pot, but I picked up a bottle anyways. Just had a lightbulb moment when I saw the thumbnail for this video. We don't see much from Forty Creek in the states (Rochester, NY). Thanks for the offhand whisky review; delicious!
Came for the bushcraft, stayed for the booze.

you can always put a scoop of the dried chili in the rice and beans to give it a little different taste! Don't forget a small squeeze jar of Tartar sauce for the fish! Also you could cut up 1-2 pieces of jerky and put in the beans and rice too! :-) Have fun will be watching for the video!

That Bush Buddy stove is the way to go. The Snow Peak Ti pot is good as well just put a rubber band around it that will keep the lid in place. I have one as well and rubber band the lid before putting it in its mess bag. Have a great time.

I recommend two books, First, Voyage of the Paper Canoe. It is an account of a lengthy trip in a canoe made of paper and resin in 1877 by a former Civil War vet. The second, Goodbye to a River. It is a prize winning story of a man who floated the Brazos River in Texas while it was still free floating. His trip took over a month. He fished and hunted and lived on what he got (catfish, ducks and squirrels mostly) and a sack of potatoes. He tells some very interesting stories, too about Comanche Indians.

You mentioned the rice, beef and veggies being bland. Below were recommendations for a few things, soy sauce, etc., I make something just like that maybe once a month, and one thing I do is just add some powered beef soup base to the water while I cook the food. No longer bland, I also add dried onions to mine.

The only great thing about the food bag is that it gets lighter as you go... start out super strong, able to carry it... then as you go, less stress on you. You're young... three shots a night good for you...for us older fellas 3 would be gone by 10:30 in the morning... that's why we fill our water bladders with the good stuff! HA!!! Fish... I do hope that you and Kyle have great luck with fishing on this trip... other times were not quite what I expected from you guys. Can't wait to see your footage of great catching and awesome belly-filling of whatever the catch of the day is. Praying for fish!!! Your breakfasts are all Quaker Oatmeal... man after my brethren heart! That's my fave chip mix also... have a big ol' bowl on hand always on the coffee table! Your food rations look great... the abundance of fish that you will be catching will be great as well. As a matter of note.... if you continue casting to one side of the boat and catch nothing... consider casting to the other side. It's worked in the past!!! Good luck... great travels... have fun guys!

a bag of oats, tea bags, instant coffee mixed with whitener and sugar, and powdered milk for the breakfasts. Dried fish (pemmican?) and blue berries, with added olive oil for lunch (ready to eat/ no hot water needed). Dried moose meat and soup mix for supper. These foods shouldn't perish during the trip. Maybe a zip-lock bag of protein powder will be so beneficial to take as well. My two cents.

Mix your veggies and rice with fat free cream of chicken soup before you dehydrate it and you will be very, very happy eating it in camp (I say fat free because fat can go rancid)! If you dehydrate the meat separate from the veggies it will be even better, but it will be much tastier with the cream chicken stirred in even if you dehydrate it all together. Happy trails!

Hi Joe, Les Stroud has a great video on how to pack your food, where he suggests that you pack your food into bags for each day. So, instead of packing all lunches together, you'd have breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner in one ziploc bag and labeled as Day 1, Day 2 etc... And pack it so day 1 bag is on the top and day 9 is at the bottom. That way you open only one bag per day. What do you think?

+1fanger I was on a short trip to Algonquin earlier this week and the black flies were bad. I soaked my clothes in permethrin before the trip, wore a Original Bug Jacket most of the time and used Muskol on my hands. Not a single bite in two days.

He dehydrated his own meals at home to take with him. When preparing meals in this manner everything has already been cooked then placed into a dehydrator. I was referring to the initial cooking process not the rehydrating process. It has nothing to do with river water or any water used for rehydration.

The Temagami area is one of the most beautiful and majestic places in the entire world. One of the few old growth forests that still remains is there. I live within a 45 minute drive so I'm very fortunate. That being said it's also very dangerous, I almost died in a near drowning on "Smoothwater" lake when a freak storm came in hard and fast and sunk our boat. 3 waves and we were swimming in the middle of the big bay, at that same spot there are crosses placed on the closest point, lots had perished where I somehow survived. To be honest my youngest brother became a man that day in saving my life. Had he not been there, I truly may not have been able to be here now.
