Opal is such a superb ston as it is , I think nobody should treat, double or triple it especially experienced cutters like yourself witch know how to appreciate it in its natural form.

My problem is not that my wife is tired of Opal. She does not like jewelry at all .... The only thing I've managed to "get on" her is a nice watch. She does not use bracelets, earrings or necklaces. She does not use the wedding ring either :(
So I bought a cheap slicer and a gem-grinder / cutter. And I think I've learned enough from your videos to be able to make an "Opal jewelry" that I hope she will use ;)
I've figured out your videos on how to proceed, but how do I go to buy stone for my purpose? I have learned a lot from your expertise so therefore I ask you.
PS: My wife says that our 4 children are her "jewelry" that she "wears" until they reach 18 years ;-)

Do you wear a breathing mask while cutting the opal? You make very helpful videos thank you me and the wife really enjoy watching these.
Where do you buy lots of raw matrix opals? My hubby wants to start trying his hand at cutting and making jewelry out of them.
I think I always used cerium oxide on leather(maybe by hand) for a final polish, if I remember right I got a higher polish with that than diamond, I never had any of that type opal though. Opal used to be a lot cheaper but years ago someone told me that the Japanese started trying to buy all the opal or the mines and the price went through the roof. I bought a really nice 8X10 oval multi colored white opal down at Six Flags for $10 in 1979, and a few years later I bought a real nice 8X10 oval at the Canton Texas flea market with larger multi color size pin fire for $20, there's no telling what they would cost now, but the last time I looked at buying any the price was outrageous, I thought. Where are you able to get the Andamooka Matrix Opal ?

Great vid! I'm glad to know having a polished surface doesn't necessarily interfer with the treatment. Do you put the opal in the acid cold and heat it all together? Or is the acid hot when you put the opal in?
@@PulitzerOpal yes thats why I decided to polish pre treatment initially. I figured if I left them rough and polished after I might polish through the treatment. I hadn't considered re treating. So about two thirds of them are polished and the rest at around 600 mesh. I've had them in sugar solution around 3-4 days and am chomping at the bit to go to the acid. Maybe tonight. I'll show you the results.
Also I figure if the polished ones come out weak I'll just sand the polish off and retreat and see if that solves a problem. Cheers

Pulitzer Opal Thanks for the answer, I bought two glasses in pirex and I'm gonna make them punch from a glass manufacturer, I m sorry, I wanted to ask you another question: What is the specific amount of water and sugar in the first treatment and acid in the second? After you finish the treatment, how you cleaned up your glasses and your penitulties, and how you disposed of the acid, thank you again, I'll let you know about my results

great treatment, but I can not imagine how it neutralizes the acid absorbed by the opalo so that it does not harm human skin

@@PulitzerOpal you can go to my Facebook page got pictures of wood turning on it. Shop space is always a battle. I got a barn full of wood, a welding shop, than I took over the house garage for wood turning. My wife got me hooked on mineing up in the mountains. Lol it never ends.

Also thanks for sharing, eventough I don't work with stones/ opals at all, but from material point of view it is interesting and that sugar/acid treatment is just marvelous.
@@PulitzerOpal Thanks a lot I would like to have something like that for grinding of small and tiny samples, I just hope that it will be possble to attach also metallic (non ferous) materials or other composites, for sure I will give it a try. But I need to experiment with the applied heat because of oxidation of some metals. :/
@@PulitzerOpal Sure I have seen it since I was child in TV or across the internet. Sure I can create plenty with epoxy too. Exactly your point, the epoxy is depending on the filler a lot, also on the working/hardening time, which mostly for best quality is about 12-24h, however that I am using for mainly metalography, but when I would like to shape something with no goal to achieving perfect flat face, I would like to try this vax. It seem that it grip perfectly, therefore I will give a try! thanks a lot for so detail information.

This is new informtion, yikes, had no idea that Matrix Opal doesn't treat all the way in.
Question tho, you polished with 14k but dry, do you polish slower than usual to prevent overheating or it doesn't matter anymore at that stage?
All stones that are cut dry get hot. They cool withing seconds (if they didn't get too hot). Actually, the 14k wheel makes the opal hotter than any other wheel.

the way you cut make a lot off off cut -I really hope you use them other wise it is a crime against nature unlles you feel like selling them to me than its ok--- joking I know you don't sell
