Dear all!! - if you're looking for a good computer to run 3D CAD or design software, you may then be interested to know that I have now developed and released the worlds most comprehensive FREE benchmarking test for Autodesk Inventor with a global online leaderboard. See the announcement video here th-cam.com/video/Xck3lvuMRjM/w-d-xo.html and check out the leaderboard here invmark.cadac.com/#/ - the test was 100% designed from scratch through to release by myself, Neil Cross TFI.
Great run through! NOt sure if someone already mentioned it but you don't have to edit the files manually to give them a unique name. You can add things like FRAME__ in the Application Settings->File->File Naming Defaults->Frame Generator "Frame Assembly:"
Thank you. Didn't know this existed even. I can see where this would really help. An in-depth video on changing the profile of the structures would be great. Thanks again.
So devo'd that you didn't ramble. Half the reason I watch you. I'd love a follow up video where one might run into trouble with the frame generator. Love the new format though! Quick and to the point!
What a silly question! Comment in the section if you want a more in dept video? Duh! Is the earth round? Off cause we want an in dept video! BRING IT!!! 😄 Btw. brilliant and concise video on the subject - Thank you! 😊
As usual great Tutorial, I've always found the Frame Generator very over complicated but its far easier than doing in the manual way. i really wish inventor would adapt the way solid works uses weldments as well as the 3D sketch environment its so tedious in Inventor, once again love all your tutorials Niel.
This was fantastic. I appreciated the way you flew through it not as something to be followed, but something to be observed. And you are hilarious too, bro. Well done!
This is a new way for me to generate frames and i think is gonna make much easier now. Thanks and inreally apreciate your videos. Keep up the good work :)
Just started using inventor. And just a big thanks to you. You just explain things that i understand it so easily. just going thru all your tutorials and its getting me going quite fast. Really appreciate it
Adding custom profiles would be a good vid! I struggled for hours before I eventually got aluminium extrusions into my library! The frame generator is clunky but workable however I've given up with the cable and harness tools! Far too much of a headache to get results from, IMO!
I agree on the clunkiness and there are a number of glitches I've reported to Autodesk and nothing has been done about them. I asked what the development Direction was and got no reply that it was going to be improved. Neil, are you aware of the problems that exist in frame generator? Do you have any insights on what Autodesk might be planning or doing with it?
@Neil3D If I have a 1/2" thick end panel Carbon Steel sheet with SEVERAL 4.75" O.D. Holes cut in it that is part of the equipment and I want it in the wire frame while i'm using the frame generator. Can I extrude the end sheets to what I need during the sketch process and when finished still run the frame generator and it show the end sheets extruded without it weirding anything out?
Is there a way to get a cut list ie: length, angle1, angle2 from all members including trim/extend to face members, instead of just the miters using the property "Cutdetail#". I would be willing to use ilogic or VBA if I could get an actual solution.
Fantastic short explanation! But one question please: let's say I don't want to directly weld the diagonal frame (the one which you later changed) but I won't to have a plate welded on it, with 2 holes to assemble it via screws, how could that be done? Is there any default option? Or do we need some space and later at the plate as an extra ipt? Thanks
Does all framework have to be added to the original skeletal model or can a subassembly with a new skeletal model be created for additional framework later in the assembly process? For example, if I wanted to model existing framework in order to make modifications to it, could the original framework be model in the top level assembly then create a subassembly for the modifications? Hopefully that makes sense.
Great Video. Love the way you explain things. Do you have any suggestions or videos on naming frame generator parts when you have vault. I am trying to nut this one out at work as I am trialing Vault Workgroup before it is rolled out to the office. Thanks
How do I find the max load of a frame member? Like if I want to see the maximum amount of weight a piece of steel can take, how do I get the program to find that out for me?
On my content Center tab it shows the Custom Family Default is set to "As Standard". I do not recall if it was set to "As Custom" before AutoDesk support got a hold of my file locations. this guy moved all kinds of things around and now when using Frame Generator some sizes are not showing up for pipe. But when I open the Content Center to edit and add the size I need, it's already there.
If I would’ve known this feature before, how much time and efforts would have saved! Is there too much difference with this feature but 2017? Thanks Neil! Hope that annoying procedure for renaming each subcomponent be improved for upcoming releases! Nice tutorial mate!
Hans Brommer , it is a real time saver for sure, but watch out as you get into more complicated assemblies or weldments because it can get unwieldy and it has some glitches in the system
Hi. As a one time only job, I need to design and sketch a frame using 30mm box section. Drilled holes in specific places to send to a fabricated to build. Is there any easier app then this for someone like me who has never used apps like these before? Ideally free or cheap since it's a one off
Hi, just a quick question. We do a lot of work with handrails and kee Clamps (connectors). Is it possible to quickly draw up a 2d sketch then change to steel tube. Internal tubes aren’t welded so would need to be a butt joint then in assemble somehow align the corresponding clamp to the steel joints. This would completely revolutionise how we design and completely speed up the process. Cheers Jay
@TFI I love this frame generator!! but it seems like in de 2021 version there is no way to select multiple edges anymore. Is this so or is it my noobness ;) 1 Day :later and it suddenly is working like it suppose to do. Autodesk Buggyness?
Hi Bro, thank you for your awesome tutorial video. Can you help me to solve some issues? Now I am dealing with creating a post handrails that connect with the Pads of Cylinder Vessel, the issues is how can I extend the tube (from Insert Frame Command) to the curves surface of the pad? Thank in advance
Yea I try to remember not to use it when I'm doing absolute rock bottom beginner videos, mostly because there's a very high chance that a complete beginner won't have one so it just adds to any confusion and insecurity they might have about using the program.
Dont know if you will see this but i cant seem to find the answer online or at least one that works. I have made my 2d sketch and then gone into assembly to use the frame generator for the truss components. Initially i was able to select the individual lines of the sketch. But now i am trying to add 100*10 flat to the front but when i select the sketch lines it adds it to all the lines. I don't know what i may have changed or done to make the sketch lines "grouped" or whatever the applicable term is.. Hope your able to help me.
A few weeks ago I was doing a large 30m x 10m x 7m frame design, I had huge problems with the BOM list. Unfortunately, TH-cam didn't give me this video when I was looking for help. greetings
Hi im working or playing whit a mountainbike frame and i wonder how do you easly generate Tube Coping prints do you have to slice the tube and unfold it and so on and so on???????? Thanks for good vids :)
There's pretty much only one way to do that, there's a few ways of getting to the same point, but it's possible. I can knock out a vid on how to do that, not sure if you're already doing it or not but it might be useful for others too!
TFI tanks no I'm new to inventor I did work in solid edge before so I'm having a little hard time whit this but I did manage to make a mtb full suspension frame now when I was home sick😊 so I'm learning. Going to weld one up later this year
This might be a crazy thing to ask, but what about curved frames? I can use the frameworks edges just fine, but drawing and placing frame members on a curved face, has been impossible for me. Curved on the horizontal plane, not vertical if that makes any sense. I'm using this method to make panels, but I need a support member that centered in the panel and goes from the top to bottom of the panel. As a bonus, I'm also doing this in an iassembly because I will need different panel lengths. The straight panels I've done work as needed using your methods so thanks very much!
How to I change the default units from inches to mm? Every time I open a new part/assembly it assumes I want inches, and I have to manually select mm, can I set it so it assumes I want the metric option?
Please do a video for all the various shape generators. There are no real tutorials on line for them. Also, can you make a video on Dynamic simulation?
As it always by default creates folder named based on the assembly You are creating the frame in, I don't bother changing names only problem is I can't pack and go into single folder I have to keep the hierarchy.
Can you edit the profile of each frame to a bespoke size? I remember with solidworks structural members each frame member was an extrude and you could go in and edit the sketch.
Yea that's not the best way of doing it though as the description and file names will still say the original size, I imagine solidworks would do the same. Its very unlikely that you could edit a sketch dimension in solidworks and all of a sudden it goes and updates file names and part numbers! If you want bespoke sizes we can edit the table data, I didn't cover that in this I don't think as I wanted it to be proper beginner stuff, but I'll do that stuff in a new video.
I would really like to see a more advanced tutorial. In particular, I would like to know about the pros and cons of using a 3D sketch compared to a bounding box. Also, the biggest problem I face (Maybe due to the fact that I use 3D sketches?) is when I want to redo the entire thing. Like for example move a beam which sounds simple enough but sometimes it leads to weird consequences... :(
I think you've just answered your own question! That's why I use a bounding box where possible, a 3D sketch is a nightmare to edit in the future and keep it's structure together. Most (repeat most) frame fabrications are relatively straight and box-like, so you can likely define them using bounding boxes and solid model features to sculpt the profile.
Thank you. Nice diction and good job. I'm Brazilian, I don't speak English and I understood almost everything. I don't think I actually speak the language of the United States of NORTH America.

Best Line... "It's best to save often, because it's Autodesk." Had me laughing out loud. Too true.
Great run through!

That's a bloody good tutorial mate. Love the energy!
As usual great Tutorial, I've always found the Frame Generator very over complicated but its far easier than doing in the manual way. i really wish inventor would adapt the way solid works uses weldments as well as the 3D sketch environment its so tedious in Inventor, once again love all your tutorials Niel.
just started using inventor over solidworks and its so fckn complicated wy tf do u need 6 files to create just a weldment asssembly my god wtf
If you could give an example of importing and using a profile into frame generator, such as extruded aluminum, that would be awesome!
Great vid mate! Wish I knew this existed a week ago before drawing a trailer frame from scratch!
Just started using inventor. And just a big thanks to you. You just explain things that i understand it so easily. just going thru all your tutorials and its getting me going quite fast. Really appreciate it
Well it's been a year and I just got a chance to watch it again. Magic ! Thanks Neil. Jim
Simple but impressive. The methodology is very important. If you choose right way of creation a model you get a very flexible part/assembly.
I literallz started using this frame thing today. Thanks for the tutorial, a more advanced one would be awesome
Thank you. It is very easy and quick guideline for me.
Thanks for this. I would really like to some more advanced tutorials using frame generator please.
The pain you saved me, unspeakable level gratitude Sir
fun, i love what i do. hey man good stuff. Thanks you are very good at this and fun to watch.
Adding custom profiles would be a good vid! I struggled for hours before I eventually got aluminium extrusions into my library!

Neil, are you aware of the problems that exist in frame generator?
Do you have any insights on what Autodesk might be planning or doing with it?
I have absolutely no requirement to model frames. Going to try this tomorrow anyway.
As a fabricator, this is absolutely brilliant for custom work
thank you so much. Exactly what my prof explained but way more clear tbh haha. Legend
Nice tutorial. I have been having content issues with my hmdi connected speaker and subwoofer. No soft is coming through, still coming out of
40 seconds in and im liking the video just because of the way you talk
I am always waiting for your next video. Love it!
SWEET! More deepgoing vid on FG with custom stuff would be greatly appreciated! ;)
This is something I need to practice. Looks like we're going to start using it at work now. Thanks Neil.
Jim
Phenomenal! I can’t wait for the full on madness. I putting my request out there again I want to see a tutorial on Tubes and Pipes accelerator
There's some minor changes to T&P in the next version of Inventor so I'm holding back until that's out before I do something for that!
TFI can you do Shaft generator, bearing generator and/or gear generator?
Thank you so much! quick, concise, and with better-than-tolerable audio quality! :D
Good Information, Good Humour, Good Job.

This function looks like useful for designing room made by al profiles!
Can you use frame analysis on something you have already modeled or a full assembly
Way better than my Inventor videos 😅
Fantastic with this super speed tutorials!
Great tutorial! Please continue!
Would the frame generator be good to design hand rails. I am very new to this (2 weeks learning) and trying to find the best way to design hand rails.
Can you create resident solids such as plate that would bolt to the frame snd it show up in BOM? Or how does inventor handle that?
Love this video. Helped so much with my desk and buggy builds. Thanks man
Great video again, would you be able to do one with 3d wire framing, maybe some funky angles would be great to see.
Thanks
Yes please do an in depth video on frame generator
Great video, (as always). I started posting my soft on youtube because of you, but if sobody could give so feedback then i know
If you are using vault server basic do you need to rename the members every time?
Does all framework have to be added to the original skeletal model or can a subassembly with a new skeletal model be created for additional framework later in the assembly process? FACTS!!!!!! Thank you so much man, you're the best!!!!!!!!!
Best overview, demo evveeer!
very beautifully explained
Thanks for the video TFI. Question. Can I add parts to a member?, say I want to add sketch to one of the members and extrude?
How do I find the max load of a frame member? Like if I want to see the maximum amount of weight a piece of steel can take, how do I get the program to find that out for me?

Hi TFI, I'm looking for a walk though video for making corrugations in sheet metal in inventor pro 2016 is that something you could show me?

Beautifully done. Thanks!

TFI, what is the "reuse" option in the design tab, frame group, of the Inventor ribbon?
This is the best video about frame that i saw. congrats good gay! you're beast!

Thank you. This was very instructive.
Sup Neil. Awesome as always. Thank you for the demo on framework.\m/
One more thing. I noticed you didn't use your 3D navigator in demo.
Yea I try to remember not to use it when I'm doing absolute rock bottom beginner videos, mostly because there's a very high chance that a complete beginner won't have one so it just adds to any confusion and insecurity they might have about using the program.

If i make with say 8 legs (4 along each side) when you modify the size of the frame will stretch all the sections evenly?
nice and easy, thanks man
Great Demo need that now I know why my company has 100s of frame0001 files everywhere, something else to sort lol
Hello
Thank you for your videos. I am trying to find the full spec of your computer build with AMD Ryzen 5 2400G. Can you provide it?
really helpful mate
I am using 2019 and I can't find a design tab around here, it's not even listed in the panels. Is it the difference in the versions?
klick return right above your screen
while creating BOM, how can we get rid of the reference model name.
One Question, Some of the parts are similar and but have different part number. How can we show them in increments?
A few weeks ago I was doing a large 30m x 10m x 7m frame design, I had huge problems with the BOM list. Unfortunately, TH-cam didn't give me this video when I was looking for help. greetings
