THE TEMPESTS - SOMEDAY (SMASH ALBUM)

  • TEMPESTS hailed from, or around, Charlotte, North Carolina. The group was first set up by two brothers Mike and Roger Bunch. In 1968, "Would You Believe!" album was released on the Smash label, a subsidiary of Mercury records.
At the time of this release, the Tempests consisted of ten members. The leader singer and co-songwriter of 'Someday' was Hazel Martin Jr. (1936-2008). He had a powerful and distinctive voice, described by some with "an unforgettable, honey-soaked voice".
'Someday', and other tracks featured on the album, became highly sought after in the early 1980's on the Northern-Rare Soul scene. The track was featured regularly on DJ Guy Hennigan's top twenty at Top of the World, Stafford. Initial plays of the record in 1983 required the traditional practice of 'covering-up'. Consequently, the artist was introduced for a brief time as 'Bobby Paris!'
The Tempests also figured prominently in the Carolina Beach scene.

On the album cover. My grandfather Gerald is standing beside Hazel to the right of him. My grandfather Gerald played the saxophone for the tempests band. Warms my heart to hear this being enjoyed by so many people over the years

Brought up on Reggae music all my life in London, Hackney. I met my wife whose from Warrington who introduced me to NS music 4 years ago at the Blackpool Winter Gardens. I can honestly say that since then my life musically, emotionally, and spiritually has changed forever, I don’t listen to reggae music as much now, its been all about NS since then. Silly to bring colour into this but the (Northern) soul started with black people in USA. People from the North of England took it and owned it, and quite rightly so! I’m 4 years into discovering it, and honestly I’ve got to thank you guys from up north who are responsible for this change from my perspective, Ian Levine, Richard Searling, DJ’s Ginger Taylor, Chris King many more and then the NS crowd for bringing this music to me, the way you all enjoy yourselves is quite aspiring and infectious, I’ve learnt a few dance moves but nothing like you guys, you’re amazing. Things is you have to feel NS music, to get into its rhythm to understand it! Gutted Winter Gardens is not on this year but hopefully The Tower will be open in November 2020 can’t wait to hear the likes of Jimmy Radcliffe, or Bobby Paris KTF

It was not silly at all. I've followed Motown since 1964 - there was no thought in my mind, or my friends, of colour. Just the music. But, if you want - all the good clubs, and fab coffee bars, were 'black'. Just made it better. Thank you for the post, Paul.

Love this track: having travelled all over the Country in my younger days (40 years ago) to try and visit as many all-nighters as I could from Wigan and the last days of the Torch, and most venues in between, meeting other fans as strangers and leaving as lifelong friends.
Now I am old, 60+ and full of cancer, and when I do have the energy can still be seen dancing around the kitchen although like you, I have slowed it down a bit these days, more Timi Yuro’s ‘It’ll never be over for me’ or Tommy Navarros ‘I cried my life away’ more so than Rita and the Tiaras or Duke Browner - sadly.
Casting an eye over other music genres over the last few decades, the rise and fall of punk rock, new romantics etc, and far too many more to
Mention here, or remember ? These trends or fashions were just something you did, something you went along with, they didn’t define who you were like the Northern Soul scene which all it asked from you and of you, was passion and dare I say it SOUL.
Reflecting on my life back then and those who made the Northern Soul scene what it was, to all of you - we were gods…….

The Windrush Generation brought with them a huge amount of art and music that transformed British culture forever. As a teen lots of my mates were first generation and we thought them so cool we copied so much of their style, any racism was for our dads - yesteryear 'Alf Garnetts' bless them (we did all the innocence go?). We loved Stax/Motown/Reggie but the word spread of a 75rpm 4 beat rhythm craze in the the backstreet of Stoke in a club called the Torch - an all-nighter. So in 1971 a dozen of the lads got into the back of a Bedford van and we headed up from London. The Torch was an old converted cinema which was apparently a mod club once but became a major soul venue. We thought we may have a spot of bother being from London but none of it - they people of the North could not believe we had travelled up all that way and we fitted in just fine - we were like everyone else - young and wanting a good time. But the music was just out of this world - it was so different - it was raw and rocking. We had a great time and went back on a number of occasion and even saw live performance by Stylistic and Chi-lites - memorable. When I hear these time-less records I really am thankful I was around in that era - a working class lad, having fun and dancing the week-end away - priceless!

I totally agree...I thought I'd heard it all but ever since I discovered ROBSBIGCITYSOUL a few years ago, I have been addicted to "Someday"! I play it over and over again...hard to stop. "I'm going to find you...and make you mine, oh mine"......Thanks so much, Rob!

You know, I feel this is the closest a song comes to perfection in this northern soul genre. Hope this doesn't sound too over-the-top.
