You know, an aluminum block M52 with a Tilton OT-ii clutch would be a nice piece to throw in here. Or, for that matter, a 5.5" Tilton clutch on that LS3, with an ATI harmonic damper and CS130D alternator.

I know for the most part that increasing the load profile on an engine greatly reduces life, but I also chuckle a little bit every time I hear it, knowing that I drive my truck with its little 5.3 ls based motor like it’s a NASCAR every single day, and at 196k miles I haven’t had a single issue with the motor or the trans. The internals of that motor haven’t seen the light of day since December of 2001.
Interesting weight differences. I do wonder about the top engine tuning for the 54 vs 65. Yes clearly the N54 has boost potential, and that would up the weight on the 65. But capacity does count.
Great content! However, it would be best to weight all of these engines fully dressed since that is how they operate in the car, and the components and weight are not equal for all engines. The dressed S65 looks like it is missing the AC compressor, so that needs to be accounted for. I'll add 15 lbs for that. This actually amounts to 445 lbs or 202 kgs, just like BMW advertised. I'm just now watching this 2 years later. Really cool episode but you guys weren't remotely accurate in the comparison with the "stripped down" LS3. It had the alternator installed, coils, and plugs. Nobody else has even noticed apparently. The ppl that think the LS3 is heavier than these BMW engines simply lack a basic understanding of engine fundamentals. 1 cam vs 4 cams, 2 valves per cyl vs 4 make a huge difference is cost, weight, and mechanical friction losses. Pushrods and rockers do add back in some weight back on but this is why the LS is unmatched for cost, complexity and power and packaging. Volumetric efficiency of an LS is no joke. All that said I have accumulated 4 S85s since 2018- all with undamaged cranks, blocks, and vanos, but they were cheap and relatively unknown an unloved, before all these YT videos featuring the car and engine were around. In the US, there's no way I could have acquired an LS7 or LS3 powered car for less.

Not the s54 it was the s85 s65 2005-2007 the n54b30 won 2007 and the diesel n47d 2008
