Listeners need to hear several of Hank Jones' wonderful Great Jazz Trio recordings to appreciate this under-rated but masterful jazz pianist. His work with his brother, drummer Elvin Jones, who also passed away in recent years, was just remarkable in its brilliance. Hank Jones was a tasteful, gracious, polite gentleman and a jazz pianist without equal -- those who appreciate great jazz trio work miss him enormously.
A quiet master since the 50s. Always fresh ideas, impossible to pin down. Plus a fine teacher and organizer. One of the finest (THE finest?) of all pianist since Bud Powell.
So wonderful. The first jazz quartet I heard was Jonah Jones featuring Hank Jones on piano. With every pianist I study, I'm really still feel like I'm chasing the sound I heard on that LP.
With the ever recorded Green Dolphin Street - Hank hung w/ the contenders and way beyond the pretenders... RIP Hank - what you carved out, can NOT be covered up... Thank you dg bailey...
I loved this arrangement so much I transcribed the bass groove and transposed it into Ab (for vocalist) so my group can play it. It's a hard bass line to hold intonation so i applaud the bassist on this video.
Jazzmen ageing is the most beautiful happening in the world of good music!!!!! Simple, swinging... harmonious! And yes, I agree with with "Freedom Explorer"... it would be nicer if we could listen to the whole music without the interruption of the interview!... but anyway... good to hear the man speaking too!
He preceded Oscar as pianist for Jazz at the Philharmonic. Of the 3 great Detroit near-contemporaries--Hank, Barry Harris and Tommy Flanagan--it's a close call. Hank really didn't feature himself as leader until he was 60. All wonderful musicians, but Tommy had a touch that made the piano "breathe."
@HendrixcommaMartin that turnaround (Cmaj7 - Eb7 - Abmaj7 - Db7) "belongs" to Tadd Dameron he used it in a songs that he wrote like Lady Bird and Casbah. Trane extended this and got Giant Steps.
I respect the pianist Hank Jones, and he certainly puts in a justly creditable performance, but you will find that The Tony Williams Trio with Ira Coleman and Mulgrew Miller really swung the hell out of this tune.....

一番好きな曲です❤
愛媛県のジャズベーシスト高橋直樹さんの演奏を聴いてから、この曲に引き込まれ、いつかピアノ🎹で弾きたい、と想うようになりました。素敵な演奏を、ありがとうございました💐

+BuckshotLaFunke1 According to Barry Harris, people playing the piano after Bud Powell did can't be considered pianists ;)
+Oscar Genter Ha ha, yes, that is/was the opinion of Barry Harris, a bebop master in his own right. Best to you.
Un style de plus en plus moderne en vieillissant.
Mais toujours au service de la musicalité.
Magnifique.
I love the song. Played by Hank Jones just takes it to another dimension.
I love you Hank Jones. One of the best pianist ever.
Just love that light touch.

This is my favorite by Mr. Jones, I have listened to this cover since I was a teenager--
over and over on a 331/3.
With the ever recorded Green Dolphin Street - Hank hung w/ the contenders and way beyond the pretenders... RIP Hank - what you carved out, can NOT be covered up...
Thank you dg bailey...

What's really neat is this is one of the very few jazz standards written by a Polish composer :D
David Wong on bass, Billy Kilson on drums (that's what Hank Jones said in the interview).
Hank Jones great pianist

@nono17891815
What a well-merited tribute - and it sounds so much better in French!
Excellent
Peace to Hank J !!! God bless/ baraka´llah !
@cathridge He is the one musician where the term underrated is surely applicable. He was so often a key part of so many great groups,
If Beethoven could hear this stuff his mouth would drop open with awed disbelief.
Would be nice if we could listen to the whole music without the interruption of the interview....
.. nah , all is good , FreedOm exlporer .. Itw is well embedded , very gentle his voice & words .. Hank Jones ! great thankyou

I respect the pianist Hank Jones, and he certainly puts in a justly creditable performance, but you will find that The Tony Williams Trio with Ira Coleman and Mulgrew Miller really swung the hell out of this tune.....
