Great video, you've inspired me into the micro 4/3 system and use them now in my channel, upgrading filming from the 80D to the G85. I have the exact lens you were taking about, the 7artisans 25mm f/1.8 plus a 7artisans 50mm f/1.8 and the TTArtisan 17mm f/1.4 for filming. Cheap lenses are defintely awesome! Thanks for the huge inspiration on budget filmmaking!
I've started using my nifty 50mm more often for this very reason. It tones down the sharpness like you said and it's a prime lens, even if it's a $200 one. Nigel, stay awesome!
I recently picked up a canon 35-80 f4-5.6 which is about 30 years old and was used on film SLR cameras and a 28-105 USM which is about 20 years old. Both the lenses have a different treatment to the images and my occasional videos. It may not be for everyone and for everything, but it's definitely a different kind of feeling to use these classic lenses.

I had a Canon 50mm FD lens that came with a Canon T50 film camera I bought about 35 years ago. It sat around for decades in storage. I was able to buy a Sony FX9 plus an FD lens adapter so I could see how this lens looks on that camera. I was surprised at how good it looked. Sample footage can be seen on my channel.
I like the idea of this, but the convenience factor drops significantly. I sold off my old glass and switched over to a cheap second-hand Canon G7XII point and shoot series. It goes back to that dip in sharpness for character, while having AF, Built in ND, Stabilisation, a flip screen, 24-105 zoom, and custom colour profiles you can load into the camera from your computer like baked-in LUTs. Plus, it's pocketable. The newest one even has a mic in, so you don't need to record off-cam audio. I'd say in terms of usability, the point and shoot clear beats my Fujifilm cameras for video. The only thing it doesn't do so well is razor thin DoF, manual focus, and pixel peep resolution.
It's worth searching out single coated lenses, which render more like vintage cinematography glass. These were cheaper than their multicoated brethren, and tending to be spurned by "serious" photographers as transmitting less light and being lower in contrast, but are great for video. Yashica DSB were single coated versions of the company's ML range.
huge fan of my meike 35mm, cheap and manual but I really enjoy the results it gives me, same feeling about my Meike 12mm, both are my actual favs, even for paid videos :)
Noticed you are using Olympus Camera. Not easy to find a filmmaker that uses Olympus. Gives me the motivation to stay with Olympus but maybe get a better one to replace my aging Pen-F which is still good but the video capability cannot make it. lol. Hit you a subscriber!

I'll add that the cheap lenses don't seem to focus search. It's so frustrating when the lens doesn't even focus! Worrying about if your lens will stay focused zaps creativity.
Man I now tend to choose my lenses based on what I am trying to create. Sometimes I want to go with a sharp contrasty look or other times a softer more vintage look. I even will use different color profiles
4k, is harder to get sharp, inherently the focus has to be really perfect that is why you tend to see landscape because focus is set to somewhere near infinity. I will usually st my lens where I can maintain that long focus...but then again I have an S5.
I voted to dislike this video, because you spend two minutes talking about skill share on a video that lasts five minute and 26 seconds. This is why I have given up on photography. It's to expensive and not worth the bother! An empty video!
first : it cheap. Second : U only shoot with 4k mean only using 8 megapixel. Even with old lens from 90s can handle the that easy. Now aday 3rd lens with f1.4 very cheap. For 24 or 48 mpx in 1.4 it imposible not soft. But for 8 mpx only it too easy. it only get trouble if u shooting in 6k and your video gona soft, but 4k it perfect. Like in my country : TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 for Nikon Z only price about 120 usd, too cheap for manual focus lens

Efs 10-18, Tokina 11-16, sigma 10-20. Each have their pros and cons. I personally own the tokina 11-16. The rendering is not mind-blowing, but the focal length and aperture make up for it.
People dont care about sharpness and resolution, sinply because 90% of people watch content only on their smartphones with tiny 1080p screens. Other 10% have 4k monotors and tvs ( they are content creators. Not content consumers) And that is very Sad
When i watch 4K footage on my 4k monitor or 4k 55 Oled tv from My A7R2 it os mind blowing. To bad people dont even realise this. They watch instagram with horible quality compresion
That's true, but I can often tell when something is too sharp even on a phone screen. But you're right I'm probably one of the few people who care haha

I have a much harder time with my Canon L lenses than with the low budget 35mm and 50mm. As a matter of fact my best videos came from those.

My c mount does focus to infinity but a little before the infinity marking … guess quality control is not there strong suit

I love using my old lenses. Today I filmed again with a 50 year old lens. Open with 50mm f1.8 you don't need a filter for a soft picture.

fully agree, made my first short film with a fujifilm xt-3 and a 7 artisans 35mm lens. Looking to buy the 25mm and 12mm next month for wider shots.
A story you can't tell on a el cheapo lens and a basic mirrorless cam won't be told any better on a Red.

laowa is probably your best bet, for aps-c 12mm is fairly wide but maybe not as wide as you want. Meike and samyang have good 12mm options
