  • Earlier this year we listened to Year Zero on my Patreon and with their blessing I'm releasing an edited recording of the livestream, song by song! There's some analysis of the melodies/chords/rhythms and soloing of the individual multitracks to hear how all the components fit together to make the final track!

So, in terms of the album's narrative, I think this song is about the direct aftermath of "The Warning". The album seems to draw heavily on a concept that was first put into lyrical form way back on _The Fragile,_ in "The Wretched": "The clouds will part and the sky cracks open and God Himself will reach His fucking arm through". In "The Warning", this _literally_ happens-- God responds to the authoritarian turmoil on Earth by reaching His arm down to the planet and delivering a message, telling the people to stop being so corrupt, arrogant and violent, or else He's going to "wipe this place clean". This is the basis for the image on the album cover of _Year Zero._ And then, of course, instead of changing their ways and humbling themselves and treating their fellow humans with kindness and respect, this song is all about how, when finally presented with empirical evidence of God, the hardcore religious fanatics double down on their zealotry and behave even _worse_ toward anybody who doesn't belong to their ranks. "Now we know we're right," they say.
This song is basically what would happen if the Pat Robertsons and Dennis Pragers of the world were handed undeniable, ironclad proof of God's existence.

Whenever I listen to this song I see a young evangelical preacher jumping around on a stage singing to a gyrating pulsating crowd. He getting them worked up in fervor, a trance and they are all just brainwashed, singing the words back to him. While he smiles an evil smile.

This song reminds me of the Killer Mike line "never forget in the story of Jesus the hero was killed by the State". Trent satirizes how the powers that be use religion as way to divide people and amass power while energizing their base. Phenomenal song because it is so catchy while simultaneously singing as the "enemy".

The VS is a reference to the Prophet VS a synth he’s had since before PHM days and used for his famous “wonky leads “often over the years
Fun fact : He claimed his was special because it got rained on through an open window in his car and was always a little broken afterward.

I assume he named most of his tracks like that. Like Mod Chorus is maybe the Modular V, which is easy to get twisted sequenced sounds out of it. OB Sequence is probably the Oberheim.

That was hilarious when you compared this to "Master of the House" LOL! I wonder if he meant it to feel a little cheesy with the rhymed couplets and simple rhythm but tons of crazy complexity accompanying him. It feels to me like the character he is representing in the lyrics is a shallow religious/political leader (like Bush sometimes was). The character it really reminds me of is Monseigneur Claude Frollo from 'Hunchback of Notre Dame', but also a whole lot of real life televangelists.

It's hard to believe that religion and the state will merge together (in the United States) since we have had a long history of "separation of church and state."
However, in The Bible, it's said that before the second coming of Jesus, one of the signs of end times is that the will of the church will be enforced by the state with violence.
For example, there will be the issue of which day people should observe The Sabbath.
In the Bible, God commands that the Sabbath should be observed on Saturday.
However, the Catholic Church has prescribed the Sabbath should be observed on Sunday.
Why this difference? The Catholic Church is exercising its 'authority' to overrule God's law.
To follow the laws of man, instead of the laws of God is described as having a mark on the hand (mark of the beast). The "hand" represents the action.
To believe in the laws of man, instead of the laws of God is described as having a mark on the forehead. The "forehead" represents held beliefs in the mind.
So in the Bible, it is described that the mark of the beast is on the forehead / hand.
People who do not accept these "marks" and instead observe God's commandments, will be prevented from participating in any sort of commerce; they / we will not be able to buy goods nor sell goods. They / we will be imprisoned, etc...
    Imagine this.
One day, it will be forbidden to say that the Sabbath is meant for Saturday, not Sunday, as the Church says.
Such a statement will be censored and then officers will be sent out to enforce the decree of the Church.
    All of this sounds fake.
Just know if one day you see that it is true, remember, all of this has been predicted in the Bible.
The reason this is predicted in the Bible is to help us have faith that God is real and His Son has died for our sins; when we see these signs actually happening.
So if what is described actually happens, then what a time for suffering.
Still, I pray for the strength to not give in.
    Do not take "the mark."
Authority is for God, not man.
I will not give in to fear. For seven years, there will be suffering. But The Son will return after those seven years of persecution.
    Eternal Love be with you.
This song echoes all of this and I enjoy it, especially for that reason.

    • @jeffripley9062
      @jeffripley9062 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I feel like this song is taking a very mocking approach to the ideologies you're describing here, and not exactly painting that viewpoint in a flattering light. I think if you're right about any of this (and, I mean, come on now, you're almost certainly not...) Then you and Trent would disagree pretty strongly about which side of that divide is the "right" one

The Beast is the Roman Empire represented in the person of Emperor Nero. This is rather uncontroversial in biblical scholarship. John of Patmos was specifically speaking to a group of Christians living under this situation.
