    Thank you so very much for this video. I can’t tell you enough how many memories this brought back for me. I am the boy in the pics wearing the bib overalls. I am actually the first one to have found the site. I found it the day before and had brought my neighbor and then later in the morning my sister as well the next day. Lol took a little persuasion to get Mr Jones to listen to me and come look. After the university came in I still was part of the dig. They had me help on the screens and I helped lift the pelvis and bottom femur. That summer set me off on an incredible adventure that is still ongoing to this day. I am truly blessed. Thank you.

      Thank you for watching and commenting! We very much hoped that one of the three children described in the video would one day catch this video and comment! We had the identity of both you and your sister, but we thought we would leave it up to you as to whether you would like to self identify. It is also very good to know that you continued to participate in the dig, even after the University showed up. We didn't have that bit of information when we did the video. Very, very glad that you enjoyed the video and that it brought back such great memories! It would indeed have been an incredible adventure and summer for any child.

    This video hits home as I used to ride my mountain bike with my grandfather so many times through this forest preserve. I cannot tell you just how many times I rode past this very dig site. So cool to see on TH-cam. I really do miss those rides with my grandfather who built his home so very close to this dig site. Great video and I thank you for a trip down memory lane.

    Well done - and in our back yard. Will have to go see the Salt Creek exhibit - and explore Blackwell much more. Thank you

    I was there in 1977 with my mother. I was three years old at the time and have very faint memories of seeing them pulling bones out of the ground. We lived on Mack Road so it wasn’t a long way for us to go. Thank you for a wonderful video. It brings back lots of warm memories of writing my mountain bike through Blackwell Forest preserve and remembering the day I saw the bones coming out of the ground.

    I can’t wait to go check out the mammoth skeleton. I’ve heard about this find in the 70’s but I didn’t know where it ended up. It’s about 30 minutes away from my house. What a great channel, I love the local history.

      It is an interesting specimen and you get to examine it close up. And best yet - it's free! It would be nice if the specimen had at least some sort of a facsimile of a skull and tusks (we recommended a hologram version :-) ) , so that a visitor could get a better sense of the overall scale of the animal, a large portion of which included the skull and tusks. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    Marveled at this mammoth many times at Fullersburg. So satisfying to hear the full story. Thank you for such well done videos about our local area!

    Brilliant piece of local history! Thanks for this, I work near the McKee Marsh and will certainly head over to see it, and the mammoth herself at the museum.

    Thanks for the deep dive. The signs at the exhibit don't let on much, like if the skeleton was articulated or not.

      Thanks for watching and the the words of support! Much appreciated! Glad that you found the video informative. Yes, very few of these mastodon and mammoth finds, at least in this area, are found articulated. However, at least for the Perry Mastodon, the Blackwell Mammoth, and Wheaton Mastodon, much of the skeleton was found within an area one or two hundred feet square. It's interesting to attempt to reconstruct how the bones may have been moved by water or predators, or possibly other factors. Thanks again!

    This is an excellent video with such a rich choice of wording! Thank you! I love visiting Blackwell for hikes and swam in the lake there in the 70's (when it was once a vibrant man-made "beach"), but not until yesterday did I know of this story. I find it fascinating and grateful for your research on this. I look forward to checking out that location when it warms up! Additionally, I plan on visiting the Fullersburg Woods Display. I can imagine there are so many more fossil bones hidden beneath marshes and preserves in DuPage County and hope that another can be discovered someday for a new generation to reveal, study and marvel at.

      Thank you for watching! Very glad that you enjoyed it and that it has helped to inspire you to visit the McKee Marsh and the Fullersburg Woods Nature Center. Both are well worth visiting - multiple times. We've certainly enjoyed working on this series - so we are happy that others find it of interest as well.

    If you're going to talk about the site and where it was located you should learn how to pronounce the name. It's Illinois not Illinois.

    • @BeHistoric
      @BeHistoric  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thanks for watching our videos and commenting! So you are suggesting that one should pronounce the "s" on Illinois? We both have spent our entire lives in Illinois and we rarely, if ever, have heard someone pronounce the state name as Ill - i - noyz.

    • @jens9904

      The "s" at the end is silent.
