    Great vid sis! As a lawyer of a dozen years, I cosign this. The profession & schooling is wonderful. Learning to think like a lawyer and honing analytical skills is the best thing about being a lawyer. Most attorney dissatisfaction is due to the cost of the education & ensuing debts. People end up taking jobs that pay more to try to pay the loans off, but those jobs are stressful. These firms and clients are not paying you a ton of money to sit on your @$$. The deadlines, the infinite amount of mistakes that can be made, the client requirements, the deadlines, dealing with opposing counsel, dealing with Judicial officials, the emergencies, the conflicts, the billing requirements . . . People that typically end up as Public sector lifers are those who usually come from well off backgrounds and/or who do not have issues with debt. Statistically, the attorneys that are happier and have longer-term careers usually work for themselves. That way, they don't feel too overworked, they don't feel too undervalued, and they know where all the money is going and coming from. As a semi related note, third year of law school is a waste on most occasions. All the important courses you need to prepare for your bar exam can be done within the first two years. Law schools need to either do away with a third-year completely, or make it a mandatory practicum year where attorneys are forced to do either externships or internships. For most people, regardless of what you learn in school, there is no better teacher than practice and experience. Finally, the percentage of people that actually qualify for student loan forgiveness are very far and few in between from a statistical standpoint. It's not a bad profession if it is done and entered into correctly. But it is very rare that a person going into law school has the foresight to know what their career prospects and the financial repercussions are going to be. The only people that are able to see this perspective are those who come from families with lawyers in them or who are in some way connected to lawyers. Best of luck to you all.

    I love your transparency on this topic! Not a lot of people will consider these things before they commit to law school and I think you bring up a lot of good points on how to really decide on whether or not law school was worth it. Also, it's crazy that there's such a huge range for the salary depending on where you work!

    This was great! I second the advice on taking a gap year. I thought I wanted to do family law, but I ended up finding a job in business immigration after graduation. It’s been 4 years, and I want to stay in this field after law school. Also, there is no rush to practice! Whether or not you start at 22 or 28, you’ll probably still practice for decades. The thing is with a gap year, you’ll most likely have a better understanding of what you want to do, and how to get there. At first, I regretted not going to law school right after undergrad. I also felt like I was “behind” when my classmates graduated from law school a few years ago. Now I’m thankful I didn’t go after undergrad. I wouldn’t have taken the LSAT as seriously as I needed to, and I would have just went to the best school I could get into. Now, my plan is to get as high of a score as I can, and pay as little as possible for law school. I’m also hoping that my experience will give me an advantage when I apply for summer associate jobs. I don’t know how it’s all going to work out, but I feel like I’m more prepared for the experience than I would have been 5 years ago. Again, there’s no rush, and you’re not “behind”.

    I have been out of law school for two years (licensed &c.) and *everything* you said is correct. For some context I went to a good tier 2 state school on a full tuition scholarship and *still* graduated law school with $75,000 in debt (after the interest was capitalized). I went to law school because I was a clever humanities major and wasn't sure what to do with my life. I got some well meaning but in hindsight terrible advice from some professors to go to law school.
    The difference between the name brand law schools and lower ranked law schools comes in how good the on campus interview process is. At my school, career services was not helpful and there weren't enough firms doing OCI. Maybe 5 or 10 of my classmates got jobs through OCI in a class of ~150. Many of my peers took clerkships if only to give them another year to get a firm job.
    After law school I... did not have a job lined up. I did doc review for a few months to pay the bills. Then I spent a a little time in a small firm. The firm was the perfect combination of bad lawyering and *very* bad ethics so I got out rather than risk my license. Now I work for my local legal services organization as a housing attorney. I make $65K a year, it was $60 but my union (I am in a union!) just got us a raise literally 2 weeks ago. My job (in normal times) is 60% talking on the phone with clients, 20% writing demand letters and 20% going to court. In normal times I am on my feet more than most attorneys and I only average 1.5 days in court a week. Though with *gestures at world* the housing courts in my jurisdiction are closed.

    • @AllegedlyStephanie
      @AllegedlyStephanie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for being so transparent! I think so many of us were sold the dream of being an attorney without anyone honestly breaking down what happens post graduation. Same as you, I didn't have a job at graduation but secured a job once I got my bar results a few months later. My hope is that prospective students do their full research before taking out these ridiculous loans. Are you doing PSLF?

      @@AllegedlyStephanie I am not. While I am not planning on jumping ship immediately, especially with the pandemic, I am not planning on sticking out the whole 10 years. I do eventually want to get into private practice.
      As for my loans, I have been paying them down pretty aggressively by budgeting for them. I live walking distance to my office in an apartment that is (somehow) below the HUD market rates for my area.
      Good luck with your loans!

      @@CarlLevitt Your story could have been a lot worse. I am sure that many of your classmates are not practicing law, and never will. I am a busy solo, and I run into unemployed and underemployed lawyers all the time. They usually sing the same sad song: they mumble about "part-time work for the public defender's office/temporary document review jobs for $22 per hour/pro bono work for the local women's shelter." But the word about the law school scam was out a decade ago, and even before them, so it is hard for me to sympathize with their bad choices, and outcomes.

    • @criminallaw9573
      @criminallaw9573 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of law students have no idea, no freaking idea, what the heck they are getting themselves into. They babble about becoming Navy JAG lawyers like the folks on that TV show, and that Tom Cruise movie. Well, factually, the U.S. navy did hire a bunch of lawyers recently--20 JAG lawyers in a calendar year. 20 jobs in a nation with over 320 million people. That means, that year, if you were in law school, not only would you not get one of those jobs--your odds of winning 10K in the lottery were much better--but not one single person in your entire state would get such a job. In fact, mathematically speaking, you would have to go through three entire states before it became likely that 1 (ONE) person got a NAVY JAG job that year. And those jobs aren't even particularly well-paying. . .

I took the year off because I had (thankfully) been rejected by the school i had applied right out of school. I did a volunteer opportunity and worked during that year and by the time I applied again, I knew what I wanted and how much debt i was willing to get into that i only applied to one school. I got wait listed but thankfully i got the acceptance around May and started that August. @@AllegedlyStephanie Thank you for your video btw. It is very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to discuss the topic so thoroughly as well. I'm a 1L in an aba accredited school. But I've decided to transfer to an online non-aba California law school. I don't' intent to practice or sit for the Cali bar. It's nice having legal knowledge in business though. It will save me a ton of money too!

      I think so. I feel like the saving grace of a legal career is that if you're over it you can pivot into something else since being a lawyer requires a lot of skills outside of just the law aspect. My guess is we'll see her in a career she loves soon!

      You’re awesome. Keep up the great work with the channel. I’m not affiliated with the legal profession in any way. I just come for the witty banter and wise commentary.

    What if parents paid for law school?

      My parents paid for law school but it still didn't change that fact that the job market was not good. The ranking of your law school and your class ranking are a lot more important than having a free ride.

      @@aalegalfocus HI Judy. One thing that needs to be pointed out is that law school rankings are only relevant to the extent that they serve as a reflection of poorer rates of employment and bar passage. There are some low-ranked law schools that have excellent employment outcomes because of regional characteristics. The University of Montana and the University of West Virginia are two examples. I think that too many people put emphasis on where they want to practice and other soft factors when choosing a law school. But three hard factors need to be taken into consideration at all times and especially when choosing a lower-ranked law school. Those are cost, employment outcomes, and bar passage rates.
