Even though it's Zen 2 instead of 3, that's a great machine for $350. Unfortunately it's jumped to $440. When you consider the 5600X alone had an MSRP of $300, getting a full laptop that you can actually game on for $50 more is pretty awesome. And I like it when 15in laptops include the number pad too, even if it puts the touch pad off center, so that's a plus. I'd also be interested in seeing how this does with the new SteamOS.

@@acwbit2368 I agree. Not having RDNA2 and DDR5 will keep the Steam Deck ahead of any non-6000/7000 Ryzen systems unless they have dedicated graphics. If modern titles only get 30fps at 800p on the Steam Deck, I wouldn't expect too much from this especially if you're shooting for 1080p, but as ETA showed, it's still a capable system.

@@dividion8102 True, but Steam Deck isn't an option right now in most of the world. This laptop has a slightly better CPU, but a much weaker iGPU. Better to wait for the 6000 series, a sub-500 USD laptop would be a good compromise. I'm curious though, if soldered LPDDR5 is actually better than dual channel DDR4 for graphics performance.

I have the same laptop and would like to warn people if they are planning to buy this:
    1. These 15-(model number) laptops (usually) come with TN panels, so viewing angle issues.
    2. if you are planning to dual boot or remove windows completely, you have to do it on the ssd itself, (hp doesn't support os installs from third party)
    3. TDP issue as stated in the video.
    4. No keyboard backlight (therefore buy the black versions or versions which will reflect the keys if you insist on buying).
    5. the lid is heavy to the point that you need to hold down the chassis.
Do note that i bought the laptop for the soul purpose of that 5500u. And well its great

My GF needs a new laptop cause Acer decided to only put 32GB of eMMC soldered on storage in a laptop that came out in 2018 and also elected to not solder on a SATA connector EVEN THOUGH THE PADS ARE ON THE MOTHERBOARD. They could have saved me a lot of trouble if they spent like 1 more dollar and added it...
However, there is SATA settings for a SATA port in the bios so I think the port works if I can add one.
In the future, when you cover laptops with eMMC storage, check for SATA support in the bios and whether or not there's a SATA port soldered onto the board.
Also man it's so crazy to see U series laptops finally hitting 950m performance with integrated graphics. Really opens the door for emulation imo, you may even be able to do some GC/Wii on here if you can do PS2 well.

I just bought this laptop just for remote IT work and instantly replaced this poor 8GB ram to the max of 32GB with the cheapest G.Skill 3200mhz Ripjaws. Now it can easily handle a few JetBrains editors opened, many docker containers running, VirtualBox with Windows 10 (8GB ram reserved), and tons of chrome tabs with no performance drops, all running simultaneously on Ubuntu 22.04. So, if you want something for development without spending a lot of money, this laptop will perform very well after this upgrade thanks to the Ryzen 5500u, which is so good. And it still surprises me that you can get it in such a cheap laptop.

I bought the 14" 5300U version of these HP laptops. Once you debloat the Windows 11 install, it's actually pretty nice. I tossed in a 16GB stick of RAM to get 24GB in total and I really like it. Wish the M.2 drive was bigger, but that's a future upgrade if I feel like it.

I worked for HP in tech support for 4 years. And no matter the price and specs of the laptop, I avoid HP laptops like the plague. If you want a decent yet cheap laptop, I'd recommend either Asus or Acer. HP are notorious for undervolting hardware, overheating issues as well as general failure of the components. More commonly the amount of failures their hard drives and RAM chips have is sickening.

And is there room for only one m.2?
Also, found a refurb for $309 but new is pushing $500 at my Walmart. Are our prices for new that different or did you snag the refurb?

i wont suggest this for anyone who want it for anything but educational purpose, got it for my sister, from local store for ₹45k~$590. though its cheap but it has many cons, even for the price, first of all heating issue, this gets pretty war from below, thermals are a nightmare on this things, i benchmarked it on R23 it got a score of only 5.2k sounds decent when compared to intel equivalent but 5500u gots till 7k in R23(clock does not go beyond 2.7ghz), 2nd is its built quality, its weak and cheap, holding it you will FEEL the body wobbling, its not much you cant see it, but it does not feels sturdy at all, keys are loose, you will feel the cheapness of keyboard on every stroke, and screen is horrible, colors are horrible on this, i tried to correct it, still no gain, The better alternative is Lenovo Idea pad, its thermals are better, built is okayish and display is far better for a little more price. also this does not have backlight lenovo ones have it. unfortunately the store does not allows returns only replacement.

You put to much of the 30W power budged to the Vega graphics when you overclocked it, so the cpu clocks was hit prety hard. Most of the games you showed was cpu botlenecked because of the insuficient power for the CPU. If you let the Vega graphics in stock or undervolted it you gona have a much better performance overall.

Great video but I have one question, how did you get the gpu overclocked? So I have this same chipset in the HP 17-cp700dx and I cant get the old aatu to change anything that you showcased here. I have tried the new release now, I am using cpu-z and gpu-z to look at the mhz and I used gta4 to put the chip under load. Then it was still 1800mhz after going to the gpu overclocking tab and raising the mhz to 2000 then checking the box for overclock igpu. I get better geekbench benchmarks after a restart compared to immediately after applying the settings here in either tuning utility
