Mr. Pete, it has been over a year since I have commented on your channel. I can count on you to refresh my interest in shop practice. The passion you have for shop subjects is strong. You are able to hold my attention without waver. Thank you for all you do. Please keep making videos in your unique style. I'm in my late 70's and one of my earliest shop teachers was an English man that was in an exchange program. He had your passion for this subject. You get an A+ for entertaining me. Thank you.

Mr Pete, your videos are great! You make me miss my shop teachers! They, like you, made/make learning fun. Never ever boring! Collecting and working with tools is better than wasting away in a recliner. Thank you very much! I'm looking forward to getting my first lathe running, making chips, and then buying a bigger lathe :-) !!

Mr Pete, thank you. Your videos are as entertaining as they are instructional. Straight instructional videos with a narrow and concise topic have their place but, the little extra tidbits you include in every presentation are worth their weight in gold. This knowledge being passed on won't be found in any textbook. There is always a history or some other fact about tools and machines that would be lost without people like you. Again thanks, as long as you have stories you will have an audience.

Well, still there till the end (as usual, I may add;). I'm a woman too, and I certainly have way more tools than pairs of shoes! You can only walk with shoes, but tools?! You can make plenty of things with it... (like shoes)... even other tools. Try using shoes to make other shoes... not gonna happen! Greetings from France.

All the way with you Mr Tubalcain! It was a very informative tutorial, learned more about vises. I also like when you come up with manufacturers mention, some of those companies are no more but its nice to know of their quality products. Nostalgic, we remember the days of catalogues in magazines. By the way, there is a lot of machine work in Africa - they have to keep their Chinese railstock, and Indian made Tata trucks running among others. Did you know that South Africa, Republic of was one of the countries that made a nuclear device. I live in New Zealand, but was born in Uganda. Thank you.

That is not a collection, that is a Hoard. The difference being that a collection put on display to be looked at and admired, a hoard is piled up under work benches and in boxes.
And there is nothing wrong with that!
Keep making these videos. We love watching them.

I really like the X-Y vises. I have been looking at garage sales and flee markets for a vise and haven't seen not a one. After seeing the cobbled together vise I think I might give it a try to make one, I do have a welder , drill and a saw. Thanks for sharing and giving me the idea of just making one. Was thinking of useing the bolt from a C-clamp, I have a few with acme threaded bolts.

I love the little Palmgren vises because you can stand them on end, squarely. I was lucky to find a 1 1/2" model. They are also nice because you can clamp them in a mill vise. Mine spends most of it's time under a hand-tapping rig.

Hello Mr Pete/Tubal, I haven't read through all 463 comments so someone else may have already said this, Regarding the larger of the two "Cardinal" Buttress thread vises, it appears to me that the damage to the sole/bed of the vise is easily repairable & might be a fun project It's visible at about 22:50 when you noted that the fixed jaw and half nut are removable I believe that when the fixed jaw & nut are removed the upper part of the bed/sole plate also comes off allowing replacement effectively fixing all of those "schoolboy scars"
If anyone has already spotted that please forgive my repetition.
    Best Regards Rick

Mr Pete, Those little home made vices were a project we made in machine shop in grade nine... I remember getting a poor grade on the one I made from those identical cast blocks... I kept mine for many years in my tool box until I decided to take it apart and remachie it... I think if we had the same equipment in school as we did in our large manufacturig areana I may have goten a much better mark... That said, those little castings are what we started with... Enjoy the video, brings back the fun times we experienced in those days...Bob

Have never shut you off early yet MrPete, with you till the end. I know I'm not supposed to covet another man's vise (or something like that), but I have a serious case of vise envy. I only have two vises so far, one is from the chinesium store like the first one you said you hate. The other one came with my antique 21 in. Buffalo Forge. It's a 6 in. Speed Vise. Great vise, although it looks like the craters of the moon. I think Bubba must have used it when he was in highschool. I'm wanting to get a new vise so this video was great to see. that cast iron speed vice would make an awesome project.
i have prepared many parts like this with scrap cast iron scrap
mill out the pecked up bottom section and braze in a slab of nicely prepared cast iron.
the brazed in part will be very very strong. you can then improve the vice by milling out the a through slot.
i love doing that sort of thing

    Lyle,
I stayed with you all the way. I too have many vises, but you have me beat for sure! You were talking about how you had students drill through the part, vise, and the drill press table. I once had a student who was making a drill gauge counter sink through every hole in his project. He was quite certain that I was an idiot! since such a project could never be used to identify any drills! I am quite certain he never really looked at the print.
    All the best!

Stayed for the whole class, Mr. Pete. Also swept out the welding booths and clapped the chalkboard erasers. ;^) BTW.... not a "collection", but a "work in progress"

As requested, I stayed the course and watched the whole video. I've been watching your vids for several years now, trying to figure out if I have more tools than you do. I think you have me beat. Keep the vids coming, you are fun to watch. Regards, Chuck Arkon

Just discovered your videos because of the "vises", and really enjoy them... wish I could have taken some shop classes in school, but they weren't available at the Catholic grade school I attended, and didn't take any in high school since I was destined for college... regret that now... but I always loved tinkering and fixing stuff once I got out of college and got a career as an "IT Systems Analyst/Programmer"... now retired (Thank God !).
I've only had two drill press vises... the first a Sears Craftsman, simple type that I disliked because I couldn't adjust it to where I wanted it when drilling something without adjusting it on the drill press table... then I got a Harbor Freight X-Y cross slide vise that allowed me to make simple adjustments, and love it !
I would not own or use anything else, except an X-Y cross-slide vise... I'm sure there are much better ones than the Harbor Freight, but it has met my needs so far, and the HF one was very affordable, especially with a 20% off coupon.
I did watch your video all the way to the end... intrigued by the various vises that you presented.
Being "drill press" vises, I assumed they would have to be mounted on the drill press, but many that you have and shown do not seem to have a way to mount them... maybe they just get clamped into another vise that is mounted to the drill press ?

Thank you for watching, glad you found me. I have over 1000 videos. Most drill press vises are Held by hand. Yes, and x y vise Is really handy

Held by hand ? Geez, I would have never thought so... I got a lot to learn... makes me want to take an "adult" machine shop class... I'll be watching more of your videos.

My uncle had a serious vice when it came to vises. Couldn't seem to pass them up when he saw a used one at a sale.

I liked Millers Falls as well. They even made power tools at one time. They absorbed the Goodell Pratt line and were sold to Ingersoll Rand a long time ago. The name is now owned by a Chinese concern.

I am trying very hard to understand why I laughed at that Dunlap joke. That dad joke could only have been delivered with your signature style to have landed so flawlessly. I was in stitches.

You tell me who's crazier. The woman with only 2 feet and 30 pairs of shoes. Or the man that has 30 different vises that also has 10 different machines that each need a vise. There's a vise for every task.
And I do love that Heinrich vise!!! I'll be on the lookout for those from now on!!
Thanks Tubalcain for the great vise video!! I'm a lover of vises as well and always on the lookout for unique vises and good deals. My favorite is my Reed bench vise that I got for $60 and once I cleaned it up it turned out to be in excellent condition and it's well over a hundred years old. The threads have zero visible wear on them and most of these vises are victims of abuse from idiots that think they're anvils or drill through the workpiece and clear into the dynamic jaw slide, but not this one. Just need to make some soft jaws because those hardened and serrated jaws will marr every thing.
And who in the world can start a Mr. Pete video and not watch the entire thing?!?!

Of course I watched it all the way to the end! That's a heck of a lot of vices. I hope you found all those assorted parts that fell on the floor and put them back with the vices they fell off of.

Mr.pete222 people are still watching your videos to the end. ScoutCrafter recommended your channel. I have a LOT of catching up to do! We have a lot of similar interests. It's as if you made all these videos just for me. I hope you are staying as safe as you can in this difficult time. We don't want you taking a dirt nap anytime soon. May the Lord bless you and keep you.
