  • If you are not a student in my class, you can fast forward this video to 1:15. I hope you do well on the Foundations of Reading test! My suggestion would be to use the white board and expo marker they give you at the testing center to code the sentences of the retelling. Be familiar with the four different types of comprehension and code each sentence with the initial of the comprehension strategy. Keep tally marks for each type of comprehension strategy and the most tallies is the strength and the least tallies is the weakness.
    Best wishes to you!

Thank you for this lesson. I never approached this part of the test using tally marks. I truly understand this portion of the test more clearly. I also liked the fact that you taught that the less tally marks in an area is a weakness. I am confident that I will surpass limited knowledge using this strategy. Thank you so much for the video!

Do you have any key tips for pacing time when it comes to writing the response for this question? I just want to be able to monitor how long I should spend on each question before I take the test! Thanks!

I wrote the essay questions first and then went back to the multiple choice questions. I took 3 hours and I read every question and all of the answers before making my final decision. You will have plenty of time.

Do you have any advice for organization of structure for the comprehension open response section? Or does organization of structure not matter as much as the content?

For the structure, I would state the student’s strength, define the strength, give some examples, and then start a new paragraph with the weakness. You can follow the same format with this paragraph. Then I would have a third paragraph that suggests next steps.

Around 14:30, you discuss that in the second retelling scenario, the student produces an incorrect statement when they say, "This is definitely hurting the girl's feelings and she has no one to talk to about it." You discussed that this is an incorrect statement because the narrator does have her mom to talk to. However, wouldn't the first part of this sentence be identified as inferential? I would agree that the narrator is upset, as the story explains that she had tears dripping down her face.

Autumn, you can tally one statement twice, and use the most tallies as the strength and the least as the weakness.
