The princely state of Pataudi is one of the most famous kingdoms in India due to its links with Bollywood and Cricket. The kingdom was founded in 1804 by an Afghan adventurer named Faiz Talab Khan. The family traces their origin to 16th century India, when their ancestors immigrated from present day Afghanistan to India during the period of the Lodi dynasty. Faiz Talab Khan first served Daulatrao Scindia and switched sides during the Anglo-Maratha war of 1803. As a result the state of Pataudi was granted to him by Lord Lake in 1804. His successor Nawab Akbar Ali Khan played an important role in saving the lives of the British during the revolt of 1857.
Nawab Iftekar Ali Khan Pataudi , who became the Nawab in 1917 was a famous cricket and played for both England as well as Indian cricket teams. He was selected for the famous 'Bodyline series' against Australia, but refused to play due to the differences with the ENglish captain Jardine. He was married to Princess Sajida Sultan of Bhopal. It was during his time that the Pataudi palace was built by Austrian architect Molte-Heinz.
Ibrahim Ali Khan was successor by his son Mansur Ali Khan , who was also a noted cricketer in 1960s and 70s. He married film actress Sharmila Tagore, and his children are Saif Ali Khan , Soha Ali Khan and Saba Ali Khan. His son, the famous Bollywood actor, Saif Ali Khan is the current Nawab of Pataudi.
