Great Images aren’t Megapixel Dependent

  • I hate comparisons with any system, but megapixel for megapixel, sometimes what you need vs what you want is all you need. But having extra just in case never hurt anyone! 🤣

Glad to see more photographers trying and liking micro 4/3 system. I use micro 4/3 since mid 2011 and never gave up. Even when i started to know well the weeknesses and limitations of the system. I've learned to deal with that and take advantage of the strong points of the system. The system is now much better and if I didn't gave up in the last few years I wont gave up now. I do pay jobs with micro 4/3 and I never had any problem with the quality, resolution or file size.

Very interesting topic, as always on your channel ;-) I own m4/3 for years and also a ff sony a7cr 60mp for several months. It's all about body size, lenses, bokeh and files sizes. OM1 is heavier than sonys a7c serie (I dream of a new Pen F or rangefinder style Panasonic, with the latest specs). Some M4/3 lenses are fantastic, (oly 12-40 f2.8, 40-150 f2.8, f1.2 primes, pana 10-25 f1.7, 15 f1.7, etc) but some sony FF lenses compare in quality size and weight (G 20-70 f4, GM 35 f1.4, 55 f1.8). The differences appear with long zoom, where M4/3 are really lighter. More or less bokeh is a choice, and its possible to get some blury backgound with fast m4/3 lenses. On the opposite side on FF too short depth of field can be an issue when you need to open your lens in dark places. A f1.2 M4/3 is equivalent to a FF f2.4 for the depth of field, but get the f1.2 amount of light. Its very useful to stay lower in iso. File size of FF 60 MP is huge. Advantage : cropping and post prod capacity (if needed) Disavantage: cards & hdd capacity and computer power needed. Micro 4/3 files are light and quality is enough most of the time. I often use Hand Held Hi Res Mode. Very useful for still images. Those files are too soft on lightroom, its beter to develop the raw on the dedicated software OMWorkspace. Conclusion each sensor size has is use and its good to have both if possible.

Glad you’re liking the system. I was using the Panasonic micro 4/3 system for newspaper work for several years (prior to the switch to the more accurate AF system that both makers now use in higher level/newer bodies). You may love the 75 1.8, I liked mine quite a bit.

I usually keep hi res mode to interiors, architecture, long exposure nature. I think products photography and archiving imagery would benefit from it too. I've not tried it on a breezy day with a regular shutter speed but it would probably be soft too.
I had to set it a custom dial because I accidentally left it on when i went to an event... you only do that once (thankfully, i did notice after a few event staff shots and was wondering why i had not shutter :/) I'm happy to see you're actually giving these cameras a try and noting their feature's pros and cons. It's definitely not a one and done system.

I am loving this series. No background or a controlled environment you will be able to get great shots out of each system. For the avg person Cost, size, weight of the system is the more important aspect when considering m43.

I have a Leica M11 with 35mm and 50mm lenses and crop a lot, intentionally and with that in mind when taking the picture. I also have an Olympus EM-5 Mk2 (16 megapixel) with the 12-40f2.8 Pro lens, which means I don’t have to crop quite as much. I’ve stopped using the Oly but not for image quality reasons. I can’t tell a difference other than the Oly IBIS meant more of my pics were sharp!

A 4K image is barely 10MP and an Instagram photo around 1MP. Combine that with the compression and bit depth of YT, and its impossible to tell the difference between the excellent OM-1 and one of the best cameras. It takes good editing and large prints (not screens) to really show the strenght of 60MP.

4k is 8.3mp {3840 x 2160 pixels} 😀 but you are spot on comparing image quality on a YT video is a bit silly. Some of the mainly talking head channels who use thousands of pounds/dollars worth of very high end gear, when in truth for your typical YT video a decent phone would be all they need.
A somewhat irritating tech channel { yes I am getting old } Linus tech tips who posts mainly talking head review type videos , yet they have in their words a "bunch of Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K" .

Agreed, both as good as each other from where I’m sitting with my iPad. I guess that all modern camera images would look this good in a controlled lighting environment?
Would love someone compare the colours of various cameras in a non light-controlled environment. I’ve been struck by Nikon colours from my Z7 and a friend always thought he got the best colours from a Nikon D500 (but he is almost blind to reds)! It maybe horses for courses if all our eyesights are not the same but the comparison would be interesting for each individual. Thanks for an interesting and enjoyable watch.

I noticed a stronger green cast in the background shadows of the Olympus photos but other than that, could not tell the difference between the OM-1 II and the Leica. 👍🏻
I once had an EM-1 mark 2 for a day and was all set to go in on M43 but took some indoor night time photos and the horrible green color cast over the photos was so strong I immediately boxed it up and sent it back to B&H Photo the next day. Low light and that Olympus sensor were like oil and water and I do a lot of indoor low light so I ended up with a Canon 6D instead which works for me.

The HighRes function is really only great for still objects. I use it for my archaeology and architecture, but otherwise not. For that it's great, both on my Olympus (the E-M5 III) and Panasonic G9 (the latter gives better results).
When I do portraits and headshots I do normal res with flash, and they get great details even with 20MP. I don't feel I'd need more and I don't see much difference between my shots with my MFT cameras and the 24MP and 26MP sensors I've used in the past.

Hirez mode is good for product photography and sometimes landscape like with a lot of rocks. It can work someone's in the forest but better not be windy.
Panasonic does their high Rez different it knows how to take a blur. I think it use another photo for part of a image

I maybe a bit preferred B. no idea which camera it was. one thing I'll say is that I find it much easier to tell on my own images than other people's. I have found comparing my own M11 vs Zf shots (Ive taken both out) that the Leica just seems to be a bit smoother and more graceful, but I suppose that could be Leica/VM APO vs Nikon S lens as much as the sensor. This is not at 100% either, I just mean at my normal output size (4K)
