I bought several yards of 100% Liberty London when my daughter was around five or six years old. That was over 30 years ago. I made two dresses, mother and daughter Easter dresses. Heirloom Sewing. Those dresses look as good as the day I made them. LL is absolutely Quailty fabric that never goes out of style, and just silky and gorgeous. It was lined with 100% of the finest cotton batiste. French seams, and no surging whatsoever. I won purple rosettes at the county fair.
Thank you for sharing! I’m glad to hear the fabric lasts-all the more reason to see it in patterns I know I’ll wear! And thank you for the tip to use batiste as lining.
I love a good fabric love-at-first-sight story. Enjoy your treasures.
I love that kind of story too 😊❤️
LOVE THAT FABRIC WITH THE BIG FLOWER COLOR POP! IT REMINDS ME OF SOME PETER MAX RETRO 60'S FLAVA! YESS!!!
THE DRESS PATTERN!!
I love it too! That’s what I got it even though it was in two pieces ❤️
Armchair traveling with a fabric lover is the best!!! How wonderful. The UK is my special happy place for some reason.
Aww thank you for watching and going on the adventure with me ❤️
Looking forward to seeing these gorgeous fabrics made up.
Thank you! Me too 😉
Such pretty fabrics. Liked the Dan shirt fabric. But that last fabric.... WOWOWOW! Can't wait to see what you make. Well done.
Thankfully Dan doesn’t watch my videos so his shirt will be a surprise 😂 glad that you enjoyed my fabric picks!
I can see the orange, pink and purple psychedelic fabric being a 70s style sundress! I’m glad you got the silk you wanted. I rarely regret buying something so pretty! But I do if I leave it behind. Happy Birthday!🎉 You should try Pattern Scout Studios patterns. Hers always come out great for me.
Let’s see if I’ve got enough fabric for a sundress- that’s a good idea! It’s funny because I watch Kasey’s TH-cam channel but I haven’t tried any pattern scout patterns. I’ll have to try them!
Lucky you!!! Thank you for sharing your visit to Liberty!!! I was in London once, before sewing, and didn't know that such a place existed. I am so happy for you that you were able to have this experience. Also, I love that you bought so many beautiful things, not available in the US. As a person who always buys things on sale because of my budget, I lived vicariously through your lovely haul. Thank you for sharing.♥💜💙
Thank you for your comment. My goal in this video was to share the experience of being there ❤️ I’m so glad that you enjoyed it!
Beautiful fabrics! Make the patterns that you want, if you are just short of fabric, you could always color block with one of the main fabric colors. Looking forward to your creations❤
Color blocking is a good idea! I will have to see what works. Thanks for watching ❤️
OOOHHHH!! I AM DROOLING AT THE LAST FABRIC! FABULOUS THE WRAP DRESS! YESS! THE WRAP DRESS!!
I CAN SEE A DIANE VON FURSTENBERG WRAP DRESS FOR THIS!!
@@dottiemathews6853 that’s a good idea. We shall see 😉
It’s a good one!
Oh man! Now I'm going to have to shop at Liberty London and be absolutely broke! LOL!! Gorgeous fabrics! I loved this video and the fabrics you picked out. What I like about your channel is the bright bold colors that you sew with. So fun! They are the colors that I would pick out!!
I'm glad to know that you like bright bold colors too. My philosophy is why be boring. Plus colorful fabric looks so much better on camera. And while I wear a basic black t-shirt in all of my videos, when I'm off camera, I'm technicolor!
Oh what a dream trip to go through Liberty of London IN LONDON and take in all those beautiful fabrics! 🤩
It was an experience of a lifetime 😍
All beautiful fabrics. You did a wonderful job with your selections. When there are so many different choices I find it extremely difficult to make a decision on them
It was hard to narrow down my selections 😂 thankfully my friends live in London and love Liberty as much as I do. So I’ll always be able to visit.
I love how every fabric you chose coordinates with the Liberty bag!!!😃💜💜Thanks for sharing, Liberty is such an amazing place!!!
I hadn't noticed that! 😂 I tend to buy fabric in similar color palettes so my entire wardrobe always works together.
Lucky Duck! I LOVE Liberty fabric--boy would I love to have some Liberty bedding! Talk about luxurious and beautiful!
I didn’t even make it to that department! I spent enough money on fabric, I had to get out of there.
Love all your choices...yum. Lived in London in the 80's spent quite a lot of time up there on Liberty's fabric floor...also the café with French press coffee and tablecloths to the floor.
Very cool. I didn’t realize there was a cafe! I’ll have to check it out on my next visit 😉
Beautiful Fabrics ❤I cannot wait to go to London.
They really are beautiful. You must go to Liberty it doesn’t disappoint ❤️
OMG I love all of the fabrics you got. The really retro, Peter Max-ish one in two pieces is my fav. I think I'd approach that by designating the smaller piece for the sleeves (I gotta have sleeves, even if it's from a shirt underneath). Also, with such a big print, I'd go for a simple style anyway, without a lot of pieces or dense gathering, and I think it's plenty for that. What fun! Also fun to watch. It's nice to find another sewist who likes funky fabrics like I do ;)
I agree! Basic style to show off the fabric fabulousness. I'm glad to know that you like funky fabrics too!
The fabrics you bought are beautiful.
My very first school sewing project I made with Liberty poplin, not the tana lawn. I was 12 years old and didn’t really know how highly regarded it was 😂. It cost £2.95 per metre (in 1982) and was 3x the price of other cottons (£0.99). It now costs £29 per metre. (USD conversion about x1.3)
I bought some poplin for a shirt for my fiancée! It has a lovely had too.
Your fabrics from London are breathtaking!
Oh thank you! It was such a fun shopping trip ❤️
Thanks for sharing! What a dream come true . Lovely building and fabulous fabric we can't get in USA.
Actually, my sister just informed my that our local JoAnns will soon be carrying some Liberty fabrics. So if your store does too, at the very least you could feel the quality in person ❤️
Love how the royal purple of your Liberty shopping bag tones with all your purchases! I'd love to see what happens to all the scraps/offcuts, never mind the frocks themselves!
I was very excited to discover the bags were purple. I’ve saved them because I just like looking at them ❤️ I need to sew another outfit with more of my Tana lawn.
I bought several fabrics at the Liberty and send them to where I used to live in Beijing, when I was working there. (I am Japanese, and was an expat) A lot of my Chinese friends asked me "This is cotton, but the touch is like silk. What is the material? and how did you get them???"
It was fun to talk about British fabrics with them. Maybe fashion is universal.
Fashion is totally universal! The Tana lawn from Liberty is exquisite quality. I let me Grandma touch it and she couldn’t believe cotton could be woven into such high quality fabric.
Toni your fabric selections are stunning. The Liberty store is amazing too. I recently started buying from Minerva Fabrics in the UK they some beautiful fabrics also. I also wanted to tell you that the tribute to your Aunt was beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us. Glad to see you again.
Thank you Craig! I'm glad to be back. I've seen ads for Minerva Fabrics in my UK sewing magazines, but I haven't tired them yet. I think I'm going to work on sewing the fabric I've got.
I love, love, love colorful prints and will be going to Liberty London in July. Thank you for taking us along on your fabulous shopping trip. I can't wait to see them in person!
If you love colorful prints you are going to have a hard time choosing what to buy!! My suggestion is to take your time and allow at least 2 hours 😉 and don’t forgot to go to the top floor for sale fabrics!!
Oh this reminds me of when I lived in Leicestershire and would take a coach to London for the day making a bee line to liberty’s. The silk satin is the best and worth every penny as are all your purchases. I have a mitre of white liberty’s silk still to cut into for a cami top so I’ll be watching your makes. Now I live in Portugal it’s rare for me to visit liberty’s but a must when I do.
Glad to know you are also a fan of the Liberty Silk satin. The feel is just exquisite. I couldn’t resist!! And I’m sure a dress from the same fabric in the ladies department would cost a lot more than what I spent on fabric.
The most gorgeous fabrics!!!❤
I think so too!
Oh my goodness me, I am so envious of your beautiful fabrics. Liberty tana lawn ( the a is pronounced ah) is the most beautiful fabric in the world, cotton that drapes but behaves itself when stitching. Your Sauve will look gorgeous, I have 2, one with and the other without the elastic waist. Your silk is to die for, you are so lucky to be able to afford the price tag, the dress pattern yo have chosen will show it off. What great choices, good luck and happy sewing!
The tana lawn is like silk! I could stop touching everything in the store. I used birthday money from my grandma to buy the silk since it was an extra special purchase. She thought it was an excellent choice! Thanks for watching ☺️
So excited to see them made up! Happy you went for it!!!🎉
I am SO excited about my fabric choices. I can't wait to get back to sewing, especially now that I found patterns I really like!
Love if dress pattern works for a statement!!!
Yes. Fingers crossed that I can make it work!!
That silk is yummy! Well done you!
Thank you!! It’s one of my faves ❤️
Stunning fabrics! I would go crazy. ❤
It was very amazing. And Ana got a quilting pillow kit too!
@@SewSewLounge I would love to see Ana’s pillow too when she has finished making it.
@@janellvincent8046 she’s done. She made it as soon as we got home! I’ll take a pic and send it to you.
Gorgeous fabric. You’ve whetted my appetite. I’m heading to London in a few weeks for the Chanel exhibit at the V&A and, of course, I will pop in to Liberty. The building is so stunning… a perfect backdrop to these beautiful fabrics. Suggestion: if you have any leftover yardage, it would make beautiful bias! Just saying….
I was so sad to see that I was missing the Chanel exhibit. V&A has such wonderful fashion exhibitions! I had not thought about bias binding with scraps-I will keep that in mind!
How fantastic to visit Liberty of London fabric store in London.‼️ The prices are a little high for me but I think I would have to buy something. Did they have a clearance section? 😅😂😊
The “sale” section was on the 4th floor. I think the fabric there was last year’s designs at prices 1/3 to 1/2 off the regular price.
I’m a new subscriber so I’m going back through videos. These fabrics are giving me LIFE❤❤❤ I love that you are ok with getting what you want. Trying to figure where I’ll do my annual birthday sewcation.,. You got me smiling. Thanks for sharing
Aww thanks Maxine! Colorful fabric always makes me feel good too. Thank you for watching and subscribing ❤️
Your fabrics are beautiful. I’m going to London in a few weeks and Liberty is on my list. I made the Avid Seamstress dress and love it. I made a Tana Lawn dress too and it’s beautiful, well worth the price of the fabric. Just imagine what that would cost retail! You said you didn’t have a lot of experience with silk. My best advice is to line your cutting table with tissue paper. I save tissue from gifts and iron it before I lay it out. That will keep the fabric from moving when you’re cutting. I just cut right through the tissue and the fabric. Can’t wait to see your dresses.
Thank you for the tip to sew with silk!! I’m also glad to hear that you like the pattern- I thought it was such a perfect silhouette in a classic design. Glad to know it’s a good one! I’ll probably make up a muslin first to be on the safe side. Have fun at Liberty!
Love the silk, can’t wait to see what you make up in any of the fabrics. If I ever travel to Europe I’m going to Liberty.
I’m exited to start sewing with my new fabric too!!
I knew you would buy the crepe de chine!! Awesome!
I love it! I couldn’t resist. But I haven’t worked up my nerve to sew with it yet 😉
So, I headed over here to like, subscribe and comment when you said "opera". So many people don't really dress up for theatre and opera these days and it's such a shame, since it's part of the experience. Found the same at Shen Yun lately - some people beautifully dressed (we had definitely made an effort) and others in very casual clothes. Hope we'll see some of these lovely fabrics made up soon and any tricks you have for keeping the silk in line, do let us know. I'm currently having unexpected trouble taking up the hems of a pair of soft, drapey viscose/linen trousers - the fabric keeps catching on the feed dogs. So, here I am finishing off after basting in some very smooth glass-type paper onto the underside of the fabric and it worked really well. I've only been to Liberty once (even though I live in Scotland) and it was a bewildering experience. I think you definitely need a plan of "att.ck". You did well. xx
My sister and I go to the opera together and LOVE getting dressed up. I mean it’s the opera!!! You have to get dressed up! I’m glad to know you feel the same way ❤️ now that I got over my fear of cutting into the Liberty fabric I will continue to sew up the rest of it into beautiful things to wear. But the silk will be last on the list since I’m still nervous about that one.
What fun to shop at the actual Liberty store. I get my Liberty fabrics from JoAnn's Fabrics ( yes they had some about a year ago) and FabricMartfabrics who also had some Liberty silks in the recent past, I recently purchased some nice cotton lawns and sateen's from Mood Fabrics and FabricMartFabrics recently. You are right, they are so much better that quilting cottons for garments.
I’ve been very tempted to buy online or at Joanns because the tana lawn is soo gorgeous. But I used self-restraint and waited until I actually made it to Liberty.
If I ever win the lottery then I would buy so much Liberty fabric!
That’s the real reason I want to win the lottery 🤣
That Liberty fabric is absolutely gorgeous...I would love to see closeups of the fabric
The quality is amazing too. I recently made a video about sewing a dress in two house using Liberty fabric- you can see it up close and personal 😉
Here is a link to that video:
2 hours to sew a dress: What really happened
th-cam.com/video/brqblXykyI4/w-d-xo.html
When I make a silk top, I make two small envelopes of flesh coloured light material. Just a single fold of fabric with edges hemmed. I attach them to the seam allowance of the armholes. Cut a panty liner in half and place a half in each envelope to sit in the armpits, plastic out. Silk is vulnerable to both perspiration and deodorant.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing.
I am so envious of your trip to Liberty! I went to Mood Fabrics in NYC but I ended up being so overwhelmed that I walked out without buying anything... I think Liberty would be a different experience. I have the exact same Tana lawn print that you showed after the very groovy fabric (love that one too!). Did you end up making that dress with the absolutely gorgeous satin? How was it to sew with? Slippery silk can be challenging.
Mood was definitely overwhelming. I had a specific list of patterns and fabric I needed and went to very specific areas of the store. Liberty is very organized and it’s so easy to find things. You have the dark blue floral? I loved that one and there wasn’t much left. I’m trying to find the perfect pattern for 1yd of fabric. I have not made up the silk. I’m totally intimidated to cut it. I’m probably going to make a mock up in poly satin to check the fit before I cut it. I will make a video eventually.
I never felt the need to go to London, until now.........
It was an amazing experience that I will never forget ❤️
That hot pink and purple made me think of the Beatles' Yellow Subberine.
It has that vibe!!
Retro flow ahhhhh❤
I love it too! I feel like it should be a kaftan, but I don't wear kaftans 😂
Have you made the dress with the silk fabric? It is stunning and would love to see your resulting gown.
I have not gotten up the nerve to cut into the silk yet. Plus im still deciding on the pattern. I might make a mock up of the one in the video in polyester of the same weight as the silk to test it out first.
Beautiful! I can hear some boomers (thunderstorms) in the background.
I’m glad you enjoyed my shopping trip! The weather wasn’t cooperating with my filming schedule 😂
Fabulous
It’s really is 😉
I live half an hour away from Libertys in London
I jealous 😉 though, it’s probably better I don’t live that close. I’d spend all my money on fabric.
WOW THAT RETRO PRINT!!!!!!
It’s “Tawana” lawn, btw
It’s very long-staple cotton from Africa.
It’s pretty great isn’t it? I’m still waiting for the right pattern to use it.
Per the British fabric sellers it’s “tana” just like it’s spelled.
For the last fabric. The really expensive one, I would find some super cheap faux silk and make the dress from it 1st as a test. You should be able to find something on line for 3 bucks a yard.
Good suggestion!! I was thinking that too. I’m terrified of ruining it 😱
Good video
Glad you enjoyed it! Shopping at Liberty was a dream come true 😍
Know how hard it is to make the first cut. I did some fabric dying and love the result and still haven't cut it, has been 5+ years lol
Omg the first cut was so stressful. It was four hours to sew, but it was at least an hour to cut out!
A meter is slightly over 3 inches more than a yard.
Do you ever wear anything other than a black T shirt when filming these videos? Please wear some of your creations ❤
I don’t. A black t-shirt and jeans are my uniform and one less thing to think about when I film. I post my creations in the community tab and on Instagram.
Do you have good men's shirt patterns?
Not yet! I'm on the look out for one and will share it when I make boyfriend's shirt.
I use Simplicity 8679 & Vogue 9220. I have used these for many years. The Simplicity may not be available If it is, the yolk may need adjusting. The vogue is excellent, I think it may still be in production. Good luck🙂
I have a Vogue and some Simplicity or McCall's as well, but not sure of the numbers--I'll have to check. Thanks for the suggestion!!
There is a pattern repeat in that jungle print.
I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
The dress would look more retro in my opinion !
Good idea!
Great video. Honestly those prices seem pretty reasonable for such high quality fabrics. How do you launder Tana lawn? I've never sewn with it but this video is tempting me to try it! Loved the tour of the store and the unboxing. ❤❤
Aww thank you. I checked the Liberty website and they said to wash on gentle cycle and line dry. But most importantly NOT to prewash. Having now sewn with it I can honestly say it’s a dream to work with!!
My JoAnns here in Indiana has liberty fabric it expensive.
It briefly showed up at one store in Houston disappeared. I didn’t realize it was still available at some stores. I didn’t like any of the prints that were available so I didn’t even check the price.
make the dress in the pink/orange fabric
Now that I have a slip to wear under the sheer lawn fabric, I will. I just need to find the right pattern 😉
It would be helpful to see the patterns closer up and not moved around so much. The fabric is gorgeous!
Thanks for watching
Beautiful choice
Thank you! ❤️
Can we buy from US
Yes I believe you can order directly from Liberty on their website.
This online store has an extensive selection of Liberty fabrics. They are located in Michigan. I have not ordered from them, but I am making a wish list!
is that thunder storm i can hear in background?
If it’s the part in my sewing room, probably. We have big storms in Houston.
Tana Lawn pronounced t-aR-na. x
Wow, how interesting! Thanks for sharing
Gorgeous fabric but it's a shame you are so far away from the camera, can't really appreciate them or see your patterns so well
If you watch until the very end I do a close up of all the fabric I bought. Enjoy!
