A lot of things. . . I told him yeah we do and when he got home that night he handed me a copy of GTA 3 he had bought on the way home. He heard about it on the radio and thought it sounded really funny. He sat and watched me play for a bit to figure it out and then asked me to show him how. He laughed his head off just screwing around in the city for like 30 minutes and then never touched it again.
PS2 was the consoles that turned over most people to gaming. Before that gaming was considered cringe. I remember even by mentioning to a girl that you like games they erased all interest in you at that moment XD Parents and girls had this image of a man who likes games is not man enough. PS2 pretty much changed people. And sadly that was the last platform that actually had gaming involved. A modded PS2 was my 1st PC so as with tons of emulation options most of us didn't needed anything else. The only reason I needed a PC was for rendering video data and play Sims2, everything else was done on consoles.

It's comical when I hear people trying to compare these modern years. I'm not saying a few weren't good , maybe 1 or 2 post-2005 years could make an all time top 10 list , but don't even try to compare them to GOAT years during a golden age like this.
Two games not mentioned in the video are Animal Crossing, which well that series has led quite the legacy, not only being a large inspiration of the 'cozy games' indie boom but also being an extremely popular series in it's own right. Then there's Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, which well it's LoK. I've just started to get into the games myself but what I've heard and what I've played the LoK series is f'ing amazing. Oh then there's Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, how dare you not include Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex.
Ahh. The early 2000’s some of the best memories I have with my brother. Very special memories. The games we played and fun we had. Nothing else has come quite close to capturing those types of feelings and nostalgia.❤
Nice thorough video. I was kinda done with video games that year. Especially after 9-11 happened, (I'm from NYC). But in 2002 when I started seeing the commercials for GTA 3 and the fact the PS2 could play DVDs, I broke down and bought one and purchased games like midnight Club, devil may cry and some sports games. It's still my favorite console ever.
I agree. Some of the all time greatest games came out in 2001. Shenmue 2, Gran Turismo 3, Silent Hill 2, wow, that's already enough for me to make this year the best. and many others
for me personally the peak of video game consoles were the 6th generation. Hardware was still unique and all consoles had their own hardware quirks. Games were often specifically designed for the hardware, creating unique identity for each console... Games were still creative and not stuck in "conventions", even AAA studios experimented a lot and pushed video games as a medium. The video game market was smaller, you could overview it easier, but the games were often of great quality, at least those that reached the spotlight. Today most marketing and media spotlight goes to AAA studios and "live service games" and both makes "safe" and "profitable" games rather than pushing the medium. Sure, there are outliers. But the gaming climate has definitely changed over the years. And what I miss most about the 6th generation is local multiplayer. and how video games actually made us hang out IRL instead of over the internet.
1999-2005 games are still catching up to DMC 1 & DMC 3, Ninja Gaiden Black, The Silent Hill trilogy, Baldurs Gate & FO1 & 2, MGS2 just on a pure gameplay level and depth of mechanics alongside other aspects
Sega realized they can't race against Sony so they had self awarnes and shut down. @@SuperHns Considering how much expensive and generations outdated Nintendo was so as burning through money before it gets even printed, it was said back then that they will shut down, then Sega did it 1st, they be like "f this Im out". The only reason why Nintendo remained to stink up the market is not because they made money on their products it's actually because they are a money laundry company. Sega didn't had that luxury ... Sega remained on different markets to sell old tech in low cost living countries and had enough IP in games so they did well on that side. They didn't need to compete against Sony since it's unrealistic. PS2 was and is the most popular console around the world. Everything else is vaporwave.

Heck, you can go back to 1977 as the start of the golden age of gaming starting with the Atari. Growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, we got to look forward to quantum leaps in gaming almost every single year. There was always something bigger and better right around the corner. This ended sometime in the last decade. You don't have these quantum leaps anymore where games released today are a huge improvement over what was released in the prior couple of years. By comparison we got Wolfenstein 3D in 1992 which I can tell you was mind blowing at the time and then we got DOOM only on year later in 1993 which was on a whole other level yet again. That's what it was like every single year for the roughly 30 years after the Atari dropped in 1977.
Would you consider doing a video in a similar concept, but instead of one year, picking a period? It's possible that the golden age of gaming development and innovation starts from 1985 up to the end of the PS2 era, we just miss so much picking a single year.
This is definitely a great year in gaming! I think 2007 could also be made into a video for the amount of games and development that happened then. You had Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted Drake's Fortune, Halo 3, God of War II, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Crackdown, Crysis, Mass Effect, Portal, Skate, The Witcher, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, The Simpsons Game, Oblivion, and MORE!!
The birthday present my mom got me that year, an Xbox which had just dropped with 6 games including Halo, was the best present I have ever received in my life
You should do a worst year in gaming video and pick 2016. The Xbox One didn't sell alot, the ps4 didn't have enough games yet, and the Wii u was deemed a failure by the gaming community, much so that people were debating on whether or not Nintendo should go third party.
For me personally 2000 stands out the most. I'll list a dozen great games below, but i have to mention that a lot of my all time faves were released during other years. Here's the titles: Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Colin McRae Rally 2.0 (better on PC) Counter-Strike (as Half-Life mod) Icewind Dale Giants: Citizen Kabuto Metal Slug 3 (Neo Geo) Sacrifice Starlancer (on PC with flight stick or HOTAS) The Sims Unreal Tournament Gold Edition Aliens Versus Predator Gold Edition
Great video! I agree, 2001 is one of the best years not only in gaming but entertainment in general. The 6th gen of consoles were finally able to show graphics that looked just like the artworks, portable systems finally abandoned the 8 bit world they were stuck in, the hype for the new millenium and the y2k inspired many futuristic looking artstyles for games, tecnology in general seemed to be evolving faster than ever... There was a nice mix between experimentation of new ideas and expansions of older ideas... As a nintendo fan, i belive it was one of their greatest years, as they were able to not only launch 2 new consoles, but also sustain all 4 of them, GBC, N64, GBA and GCN, giving big titles for each of them

The original Ghost Recon was a great fundamental tactical/military shooter that was released on 13th November 2001. (I am aware it's mentioned in the closing segment)
As an 80s gamer, Ghost Recon was the game I was waiting my whole life for. I don't know if this makes any sense, but we knew even back in the 80s that a game like Ghost Recon would eventually be possible and when it finally came out it was just the best thing. I don't know if there is anything analogous today where gamers are looking forward to a type of game that isn't currently possible on 2024 hardware but might be in the future on 2040 hardware. Developers can pretty much do anything these days without any significant limitations.

1:36 - it's like 1998 was the year all the greats came out, but 2001 was the year that markets and industries aligned so that even for families who couldn't afford a nintendo you could still get a cheap PC that would play those greats from 1998. 2001 was the year we got to taste what the early adopters and rich/well-off people had been enjoying. We may not have been able to convince our parents to buy a Xbox, but we had PCs for school and we could LAN starcraft on it. It was the best of times, period.
Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec was when I finally got a PS2 & I played that game so much.. but I just wanted to say; everyone always claims GT2 had 650 Cars, when the US Release had Exsctly 594 Cars & as far as the 650 goes, I have heard that the PAL Vr has 650? I can’t confirm either at this point, but back in the day, I had a Magazine that stated the differences between version and 594 Car has been burnt into my brain ever since!
2001 is the greatest year in gaming history because no other year had more games rated 9+ on Metacritic & it's literally not even close. The numbers do not lie.... Also the OG Xbox & GameCube came out that year.

2002 Is a top 10 year alot of people sleep on , but It carried alot of the stacked momentum of 2001 similar to how 1999 carried alot of the same momentum that 1998 had , depending on which region you lived In If yours got releases late you'd just be getting most 1998's great games In 1999 and most of 2001's great games In 2002 etc. Back then everything didn't release worldwide at the same time , Japan would take priority followed by or co-launching with America , and then everyone else kind of of got theirs a few months or even almost a year later.

I got a game boy advance and a Game Cube in 2001. I remember being disappointed at the lack of 3D graphics in the game boy advance and that seem like the only good games to get were ports of old Nintendo games. And with GameCube the other consoles seemed like they had better games at the time. Pretty soon all my friends were playing Halo on split screen and system link multiplayer, and then other games on Xbox live, and here I was with Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion...
I'd love to see you explore more big years of gaming even if they weren't as full of game changing genre defining classics as '98 and '01 were. 2004, 1994, 2007 and 1987 come to mind for me. I also don't think we'll ever get years like these again unless some major breakthrough nobody anticipated happens. The time around the turn of the century just happened to have a lot of talented people working in a very young industry, but these days, games are either too large to fully carry one person's artistic vision without too much risk or are too small to get noticed. The truly memorable titles are only going to get less and less common as time goes on.
You've put in this video the love that the 6th gen deserves. We were so happy back then. I can't help but compare it to the current generation... well. The games nowadays don't have the same magic as before and I don't think it's because we've grown up, there's more to it.
The reason why the games at this time were some of the best is because they got through the hardships of the first generation 3D systems, but also PS2 and GameCube didn't really have internet connections. That means released games had to be complete and as bug free as possible. Limitations breeds creativity. The PS3 and higher generations started to suffer major quality issues because of their rush to get systems out the door, resulting in the RROD and YLOD issues, then with internet connected DLC, it pretty much started to destroy quality games. Nintendo is really the only system now that still produces actually finished, "quality" games.
great selection - sadly these magic times are somehow gone at least for me. with every generation there were new mindblowing mechanics, graphics and ton on fun. missing it
The PS2/Xbox/GCN generation of gaming will always be the best generation of gaming in my opinion. This is not even said with nostalgia glasses as I grew up in the generation after that. But going back to some of these titles goddamn, gaming will never ever get better.
The sheer amount of experimental and weird titles is what made that generation so special. Tech before that was little too primitive for games to be able to differenciate themselves enough or to fully realise concepts that were a little more out there and generations after that fell into safe and repetitive trend chasing going from CoD clones, to GoW clones to Ubisoft style open world games.
As someone who is primairly a PC gamer 2001 was okay. Tribes 2 was a fantastic shooter, 64 players with vehicles and jetpacks was a very fun time. Max Payne, GTA 3 and MGS 2 were all good. I wouldn't call 2001 one of the top years ever,, its a year that has a huge number of games that were good but it's peaks just aren't high enough. It might be an interesting excersize to do a list of the 100 greatest games of all time (purely subjective of course) and look at what years have the most. For my tastes I would wager that there would be a cluster around 1994 with xcom doom FF6 and chrono trigger, another around 1998 and there might be a third in the early 2000s. Like I said this might just be a reflection of when whoever makes the list was most into games or had the most free time but I think it still makes for an interesting excersize.

I could get past the system again!! if it wasn’t for the fact that it would only read PS1 games!!!
@@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy Its crazy how people seem to want to erase that aspect of our past culture. Today everyone says they are gamers and whatnot. Back on the day, on the 80s and 90s, saying you liked games (no one would even use the term "gamer") would get you bullied and girls would roll their eyes indeed. But now, oh no, everyone has always been a gamer. Haha right.. I'm really glad currently it is very diverse, but let's not forget that it was NOT like that in the past.
Yeah nowadays most people in the west have this fad going on online I see they have in their bio "I love Nintendo, my fav games are Pokemons, Zelda, Super Mario"
especially streamers in past 3-4 years basically have this.
It's some new fad and it's funny and sad at the same time XD
The thing is most stores don't even sell these. And most these people didn't grow up on such things and still don't know wtf any of the things they say they "love" actually know what even is. XD
I don't mind someone genuenly liking those mentioned games but damn, from millions of other great games out there I find it hard that they only find these generic cringe titles as their "favorites" like nothing else exist
I think the outbreak made people more crazy then before ...

It's comical when I hear people trying to compare these modern years. I'm not saying a few weren't good , maybe 1 or 2 post-2005 years could make an all time top 10 list , but don't even try to compare them to GOAT years during a golden age like this.
Its probably the latter then.
Maybe because WoC is terrible? Even more so compared to the other two games you mentioned and the original Crash Trilogy and CTR
That part was sarcasm.

EIGHT systems existed AT THE SAME TIME in 1998, 2001, and 2007.
Best gaming years EVER !
The variety of genres and art styles is simply astounding. Unlike what we have today...
1998 - 2005.

What happened to Dreamcast is one of the greatest injustices in human history.
yeah but it was Sega's own fault tbh

I think 2023 finally marks the return of the golden days of gaming
1987-2011
Lol with what? @@gas481
2011 was definitely the turning point.
Oblivion released in 2006, though. Otherwise, yes it was an amazing year in gaming.
I'm still using my PS2, the eye toy cam IS peak technology

You should do a worst year in gaming video and pick 2016. The Xbox One didn't sell alot, the ps4 didn't have enough games yet, and the Wii u was deemed a failure by the gaming community, much so that people were debating on whether or not Nintendo should go third party.

As a nintendo fan, i belive it was one of their greatest years, as they were able to not only launch 2 new consoles, but also sustain all 4 of them, GBC, N64, GBA and GCN, giving big titles for each of them
My favorite time in gaming. I've beaten 34 games from 2001 alone and I've got many more to go through.

Persona 3
1998 was the greatest year for video game innovation. 2001 was the greatest year for video game creative refinement. Building on the principles set forth 3-4 years before and perfecting it.

1981 was the best year in gaming as I received a ZX81 for Christmas that year!
I say the best year was 2008. Cant beat GTA IV and Metal Gear 4 for me.
great selection - sadly these magic times are somehow gone at least for me. with every generation there were new mindblowing mechanics, graphics and ton on fun. missing it
It took me till about Halo for me to completely agree with you, and then you hit us with FF10. Good job
6th genn was the peak of gaming, so many new ips, noo dlc and micro crap noo gaas noo patches just amazingly fun games
It's 1998 but 01' is closer than most years

2004, 3 years later again is my favorite year, halo, San Andreas, need for speed etc
This is the only year that I attended E3 and I agree!
I remember when shit went down hill for gaming. 2010 -2011. 😢 Right around that time frame, Patches, passes, dlc on disc EVERYTHING os multiplayer.

I always say that some of my most favorite cherished times in gaming were the late 90s to early 2000s !!!!
They were unbeatable and have not been matched since!!! From 1995 to 2005, that 10 year span we got some of the greatest games that I still play today! And I say I still play today, I mean, I pick them up and get a game going just about every time I’m sitting at trying to decide what to play? I’ll start to look at some games and it’ll just come to me immediately!!
I do need a new PS2 … bought wine about six months back and the guy from Texas screwed me and so I immediately requested a refund!!! Sent it to me with the memory card door broke and dirt all over in the picture. It looked brand new with no damage.!! But I could get past that?? I could get past the system again!! if it wasn’t for the fact that it would only read PS1 games!!!
So I returned it in haven’t been able to play none of my favorite old-school PS2 games like I have been with the Dreamcast in the Xbox … I guess I need a GameCube too..
