    Imagine being in that underground mine/maze on your own with nothing but a giant load of strong thread that you can use to keep track of where you've been, soon to find it on your way back, deliberately cut by someone or something following you...

      You then feel a strong heat from behind and you turn around to see a wall of flames with a figure standing on the other side it
      It walks through the flames while the fire burn your rope away
      You run away frantically dropping your burning thread, you become lost immediately
      You find your self at a dead end and the figure appears behind you slipping a knife in your back

    Just image that girl who got lost in the maze underground. How long it took for her to die, starvation, dehydration, just image how scary it was for her to be walking around and it never seeming to end and how dark it would be to be walking around that maze with people walking around a town up above she can hear them, but they can't hear her :/

    Idea for a horror story/novel: Guy walks into maze, marking his path with a ball of yarn. He explores all up and down a few different hallways and corners. When he decides to go back out of the maze, he realizes a lot of his yarn goes up and back down hallways many times over. So to avoid accidentally pulling all of the yarn into the maze, he sets the ball of yarn down and chooses one of the few potential paths of yarn to follow. As he finds dead ends, he begins to be able to mark off which paths are false. But, when he follows his final path, he finds another dead end. He goes back to the main intersection near where he dropped his ball of yarn. When he gets there, he notices that there seem to be more paths than he had remembered. He continues down the "extra" paths to find more dead ends. Confused he goes to his ball of yarn, only to find...... IT IS GONE!

      If you are going through it in an overview, then just look at the direction you would keep going, if it has a dead end, change directions, but not the side you were heading. (left or right) :) you should get there 2x as fast.

    • @TheIlidius

  • @Kennebec27

    A maze and a labyrinth are NOT the same.
    A maze is a complex branching (multicursal) puzzle that includes choices of path and direction, may have multiple entrances and exits, and dead ends. A labyrinth is (unicursal) i.e. has only a single, non-branching path, which leads to the center then back out the same way, with only one entry/exit point.
    The fact that Vsauce didn't mention this, and even used the two terms interchangeably is a crime, nay it is a sin.

    • @king_theoden7859
      @king_theoden7859 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      -Vsauce3,
      Labyrinth and mazes aren't the same thing. Maze has a multible exits and, in general, is more complicated. Labyrinth has only one exit and beginning.
      And beacuse a labyrinth only has one exit, YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND IT ! People tend to believe that, once one is in a labyrinth, one can not find the way out. That is a idiotic way of thinking. The 'trick' is really simple and if you think about it, it is obious. The 'trick' is: choose a side(left or right) and stick to that side of the walls all the way. From beginning to end. Done. If one were to come across a dead end, follow your side into it, and the other out(left side in, walk along the end wall and the same out). Even if the dead end is a trap, or a pit, or in any way you can see the other side, DO NOT CROSS IT. Stick to your side out. This methood will take a long time, BUT, it works every single time and is worth it. Even if you loose count or 'begin in the labyrinth', use the methood. Doesn't really matter when you start, you will get out.
      Vsauce3, please make a video about that.
      -Horselord Theoden.

They never found out what happened to the man, despite looking through the same area in the catacombs - they also almost got trapped.

    Probably the most amazing labyrinth ever conceived is the labyrinth with invisible walls described in H. P. Lovecraft's story "In the Walls of Eryx". And recently I´ve been playing a nice game, called "Dark Echo", for Android and iOS, where you have to venture through different mazes completely in the dark, with only the sounds of echoes to lead you.

  • @HenrikMyrhaug
    @HenrikMyrhaug 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    How can you not have mentioned the very top fact about mazes; how to solve them? Since you failed:
    The concept of solving a maze might be hard to figure out, but it is intact very easy, even a blind person could solve it with tis method: Walk right. As long as you keep your hand on the right( or left) wall of the maze this forces you to go right whenever you can. Also, if you only walk forward, this will lead you through about 50% of its area. However, it is guarantied to get you through. Draw a maze yourself and try, it will work!

  • @metalcalf
    @metalcalf 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Mazes demystified. To solve all mazes except for those that include standalone staircases or elevators, from the entrance, pick one wall and follow it, keep that wall, either the left or the right on that side of your body and follow it until you exit, follow it into the dead ends as well and do not ever switch sides even if you feel lost, just stay with that wall and you will eventually exit.
    I mentioned earlier standalone staircases and elevators... The problem with these is that they can be in locations that are separate from the wall, they can be included in a dead end where there is an island in the middle(where the elevator or stair case could be located) of the dead or in an intersection where the staircase or elevator may occupy the middle. All one would have to do is follow the wall until you reach the entrance again, if you end up back at the entrance, you know you need to search for the elevator or staircase by going back in and following the one wall again until you get back to your elevator or staircase and then once on the new floor you again follow the one wall thing and you just repeat this process until you reach the exit.
    People who get lost in mazes amaze me more than mazes themselves. I would have to say that people who get lost in mazes are people that have extremely short attention spans and they panic easy. The short attention span would lead someone to get bored of following one wall the entire time and cause them to get lost, then once lost they panic, once panicked they meltdown and fail completely, without a rescue of some sort they would just die. A bit of natural selection maybe? Thank goodness for those people that humanity has chosen to save the weak.

    • @di99utpe
      @di99utpe 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works if the maze is only in 2 dimensions, and you start at the edge, and the finish is at another edge, and the entire maze is surrounded by walls, and there are no tunnels, bridges or one way paths.

    • @metalcalf
      @metalcalf 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      There needs not be an outer wall or even an inner wall, as long as there is any wall or edge at all it works. It even works on city streets. For my method you do not have to enter at the edge you can be dropped in anywhere, just pick a single wall and go. Tunnels, bridges and paths are irrelevant as they still have edges or walls to follow. And in the case where there is a large open space, you merely travel in one direction until you reach a wall and then just follow the wall.
      Nice try though.

    • @di99utpe
      @di99utpe 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So, if I place you at times square in NY. You claim you will get to Brooklyn bridge by turning right at every intersection?

    • @metalcalf
      @metalcalf 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      After you go in a circle once, you would have to jump walls, but yeah. You could potentially end up in Alsaka! I guess it would just depend on what you consider and exit. Either way, the method still works.
      I am sorry for you. I can explain it for you but I cannot understand it for you. Like I said, people like you amaze me more than mazes themselves.

    • @di99utpe
      @di99utpe 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's interesting. In your initial statement you stated:
      - "do not ever switch sides even if you feel lost".
      So your new and refined method is basically go right until you go in a loop, it that doesn't work try going in another direction.
      I have a much simpler maze solution then; just go in a random direction at every intersection, eventually you will pass every point in the maze.

    The books you referenced are now on my to-read list! And the Odessa catacombs would be a great setting for a horror game.

    the key to any maze is to imagine putting your left arm out to the side and keeping it in touch with the wall. the trip may be much longer than a direct path but you can escape any maze on paper.

      That only works for mazes whose exit is on the perimeter. In games it is completely possible for maze-like areas to have the "exit"(often stairs) in the middle of the area. And often the mazes are designed specifically to thwart such tactics.
