  • A castle set in a remote valley near Edinburgh. Home to the Crichton family before passing to the Earls of Bothwell. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here and married the 4th Earl Bothwell, James Hepburn.
Sir Walter Scott used Crichton castle as the home of his fictional character in his poem Marmion.
Of architectural significance, the castle boasts the first straight staircase in Scotland, and the magnificent facade of faceted stonework.
The Black Dinner, involving the murder of the Earl of Douglas that was planned by William Crichton at Edinburgh Castle inspired George R R Martin’s ‘Red Wedding’ in Game of Thrones.

I agree with your comment on story - I hate when the person filming & telling the story thinks they need to be in the video too ! Often you can't see the place for their stupid body in the way ! Thanks for a nice video !

These structures are so amazing. The fact that they were built that long ago and still standing is amazing. I was christened in a church that was built in the 1300’s on the Isle of Wight.

Yes, I think it definitely seems to be that the castles that weren’t too involved in any major battles are in better condition today. Geography and the importance of their position during the 1600s seems to be the factor on how well they stand today.

Many thanks. Yes, we seem to be quite lucky in that they don’t get vandalised. I think there is still a feeling of national pride associated with them. The vandalism usually happened to most of them in the form of stone re-purposing in the centuries following their abandonment - when other nearby structures utilised their ‘building materials’.

Being a Canadian with Crichton as my last name I was overjoyed to get to visit Crichton Castle 20 years ago. There are many castles far more impressive to see in Scotland but when you have even the most vague of family connections to one it makes it so much more wonderful. Also: There was a lovely pub a couple of miles away where they served by far and away the best Steak and Kidney pie I've ever had!

Agreed. I guess the only positive is that they are still here - whereas some have gone completely, having been robbed for their stone.
