Maybe someone can answer a question for me.. Ive been collecting crystals for over a year now and i’m trying to figure out how to tell what real selenite looks like. i’ve never seen it in clusters like this in its raw state .. I bought a few pieces online only to find out it’s satin spar. I would love to find some genuine pieces but not sure how to tell the real from the fake
Satin spar is basically the same thing, but selenite is just a more clear variety. I sell them on my eBay store actually, from this location.
There’s some really good stuff that comes from Oklahoma and Utah that is nice and clear Selenite

Those selenite crystals are amazing. Usually only see them in bars and not natural clusters.
The bars are satin spar. It is another variety of gypsum. This is selenite which is also a variety of gypsum just different crystal habitat

Did they explain why the selenite is colored that way, by chance? I am rather curious.
As the selenite crystals grow, they develop in layers. When these were first growing they had some oxides in the area, mostly limonite, giving it the Golden look

30 years ago when I lived on Venice Beach CA there was a man from Bakersfield CA who used to come to the beach and live in his RV in the summer and sell giant silver spur, selenite bars he got from mining in Utah. He came back with slabs and beautiful specimens he would sell on the boardwalk. I still have those magnificent logs and they have traveled with me to the other side of the country where I now live. The selenite bars have since charged many, many crystals. What wonderful treasures from the earth!
Bryan - Are the clusters particularly fragile? They look so delicate, like pulling petals off a flower. How old are these crystals? I don’t think I’ve ever heard Matrix bark before but he wasn’t getting out of that hole! I hope you didn’t get hurt (they look like really sharp blades) or break too many crystals sliding down that pile in the pic you posted but it was such a cute photo!
