Brilliant rag. It has gives me the same feeling that many of Tom's rags do - a sense of familiarity, almost like I've heard the piece before somewhere. I think it's due to the originality of the piece. I couldn't help but notice that there seems to be a man hiding in the bushes at the start of the video though. I guess it's one of Tom's many admirers.
My favourite one from last night's stream, had never heard it before. Gives the feeling of someone playing random rhythms on a piano and somehow forming a song out of it in a few hours (that's a compliment)
@LukeBuke Tom does have a score of it, but unfortunately it isn't available in any of his current folios. Maybe in the next one...? With over 200 compositions and only about a dozen per folio, it's a bit of a crap shoot, but this one is pretty popular, so it has a good chance of appearing sooner rather than later.
Just noticed what seems to be someone not believeing his eyes, in complete disbelief of what he is seeing at 0:00 right behind the piano. This piece is something else... I love it and I love how Tom plays it.
@osrevad I bought this camera in November of 2009. It not only has excellent sound quality but its gain control isn't as aggressive, so it doesn't suck out as much of the dynamics as a lot of other cameras.
@Chris246t8kr A lot of musicians at that table. Max Keenlyside and Will Perkins on the one side where I was seated at the beginning; Vincent Johnson, Bob Bradford and Jared DiBartolomeo on the other. And of course Adam Swanson is seated next to the piano.
@elvisje94 Interesting question. Both Adam and Frederick Hodges wear those old style shoes (you can get a look at one of Frederick's pairs by looking up the video called "What Does the Middle Pedal Do?"). Try asking Adam; his TH-cam account is "adamgswanson".
You can try emailing Tom on Facebook, he may send you a stand-alone sheet for $$. OR... if you can't wait that long or are poor, I recommend taking an ear-training course (either at your local community college, or free online), and then transcribing the audio from this recording into sheet music! It will be a great exercise for you and you will learn a whole lot!
I really like the trio of this piece, it has the same idea as the trio of "Knice and Knifty" by Charley Straight (reportedly from 1917) but used differently, and less melodically. This piece is obviously a 'barn burner' composed specially to wow the crowd, and it certainly does!
Is there any footage of what Tom played during the festival itself? And I just ignorant and a bad judge of talent or is he one of the greatest ever to touch the keys??
He is indeed one of the greatest. He's won the respect of nearly every musician who has encountered him at these festivals (and many others who have never heard him live but have heard his recordings). I say "nearly" since there's possibly at least one or two sourpuss/grump out there who didn't like Tom, but it's the exception to the rule that helps make him truly great.
When I first met / heard Tom at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee Ragtime Corner in 2001 (not 1999 as I'd mistakenly thought), I was freaked out because I thought he was a robot because of how perfectly he played etc. I had not really encountered so many note-perfect pianists before, AT LEAST playing this very full style of ragtime piano (I had already heard several great note-perfect jazz pianists who played brilliantly, but generally more spare styles of piano, with thinner textures). But of course when Tom got off the piano and we got to talking, he proved entirely human and a really nice guy. He simply plays better than most humans I've heard.
Yes, Tom has scored all of his compositions. This one isn't in any of his folios, if I recall correctly, so you'd have to get a copy from him directly.
@@Keeper1st Oh ok, when did they switch to the Marriott? I heard there was bad things going on at the Red Lion though I honestly don't know what they were or when they happened.
I don't think I will ever tire from watching Tom play.
Me neither!
Same!
Me to
Tom’s rhythmic accuracy and precision on this one is truly striking

😂😂
Love you Tom, star musician. thinking of you
The last strain of that is my favorite by far, the pounding left hand octaves are so much fun!
Tom makes the best piano music that I ever hear
@Harmonyww That's a big man indeed -- not literally, but figuratively. That is renowned ragtime historian and performer Terry Waldo.
Found this video today - happens to be 10 years to the day since it was uploaded. One of my favorite Tom Brier compositions.

I've heard him play this a dozen times but I think he just recomposed it on the spot.

I believe that actually ragtime legend Terry Waldo behind the piano!
@@Keeper1st Thanks Keeper! Since I'm new to ragtime, I'll look into Terry's work.
Cheers

That was excellent!
9 years later still 0 dislike amazing ^^
incredible skill
@pmj117 We're not related -- just friends through ragtime.
0:28 I'm learning this rag and I can't understand how Tom can reach that far with the left hand without any problems.
Playing 10ths in the left hand is common in ragtime and early jazz playing, so with repetition it gets easier... for some!
Keeper1st i can't even reach a 10th goddamn
WHERE CAN I HAZ SHEET MUSIC!!!!!!!
or at least chords

There is a synthesia on TH-cam ( so yo can see the chords.
th-cam.com/video/ig64Vy4HC8g/w-d-xo.html . I found it :-)
The sound quality for this video is really good. Do you have new recording equipment?
No.
This was filmed on a Sony something I believe. The oldest videos were made on a Kodak camera with 240p quality video and a classic brash sound mic.
♥️♥️♥️
@Keeper1st Thank you! I will ask Adam.

Hi Keeper,
can you please make sheet music of this piece?
can I haz sheet music plz?
Is there any footage of what Tom played during the festival itself? And I just ignorant and a bad judge of talent or is he one of the greatest ever to touch the keys??
There's plenty of videos of Tom playing during his actual sets at festivals too -- even one of him playing this same tune!

I've heard this one, it's one of my favourites :-). Was that Max Keenlyside at the end there?
Wow
@superjorrja He doesn't talk as fast I do, but then he doesn't have parents from New Jersey either.
Is there sheet music for this composition yet? I'd really like to learn this piece.
Yes, Tom has scored all of his compositions. This one isn't in any of his folios, if I recall correctly, so you'd have to get a copy from him directly.
If your still looking try MuseScore
It is indeed on MuseScore although I did not transcribe or upload it. But the person who did, did an excellent job.
Can I get sheet music for this?
Very nice played Tom! How are those shoes called Adam is wearing?
Where did he get them? Thanks.
This April Fools 1911 gimmick might have been more amusing if this weren't the first video I tried it out for. :)
The 1911 button is gone :( where did it go?
whats your relation to tom, keeper 1st?
This was filmed in the lobby right? This doesn't look like any of the "ballrooms" in the Marriot.
This was not at the Marriott. The festival at this time was held at the now-closed Red Lion Inn at Arden Fair.
@@Keeper1st Oh ok, when did they switch to the Marriott? I heard there was bad things going on at the Red Lion though I honestly don't know what they were or when they happened.
@@PiotrBarcz About 2014, I think.
@@Keeper1st Ah ok.
Two Pianos?
Yes, for duets! I have plenty of videos of both being played this night...
Reddit brought me here, me gustaaaaa!!!
haha, when I turn off 1911 it still sounds like the same song
