Well done on the Franken-pants, and your husband's shirt is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! You really pulled off a difficult task of making a shirt with panel fabric. No doubt he'll be so pleased with it. Very impressive, Carole!!! My sewing room (prior to boxing a lot of it up), I kept two bins under my sewing machine and one under my cutting table. The two bins under my sewing machine: 1 for fabric and 1 for paper, cardboard, plastic wrap and threads. For small fabric pieces (cottons), I would pull out pieces from time to time, trim them into square and rectangular pieces that I could use in a quilt at some future date All kept in plastic storage boxes according to size. Your daughter's dress is beautiful and she looks so happy wearing it. Your grandbaby's dress is adorable! PLEASE POST PHOTOS NEXT WEEK OF HER IN IT!!! Update: My move to FL has had to be put on hold for a while. This move will cost more than anticipated, so I'll have to go back to work to be able to do so later. However, I'm still sorting and packing boxes in the meantime so when the house goes on the market, it will be decluttered and ready for a move. Hi Dori, first of all I am sorry your move has been delayed, how frustrating for you as you have spent so long packing. As you say though, you will at least be ready to go at a moments notice! I think it is wonderful you sort your scraps and reuse them. I donate my larger pieces and I have another bin for scraps of cotton. So far everyone seems to have multiple bins so I am pleased it wasn't just me having them scattered around. I don't think I will be able to post a picture of Chloe at the wedding sadly. They are being very protective of her 'photo rights' 😂, first time parents and all that. My daughter doesn't worry at all! I will see what I can do though as I can't wait to see Mummy and Chloe wearing similar dresses. I love your name for my Cargos ...Franken-pants, I am keeping that! My five year old granddaughter likes to take the lint roller and roll it all over the floor to collect the threads. Of course while she is doing that she gives me a lecture on why I need to keep my sewing room cleaner.

@socarole66 thank you. I forgot to mention how I corral those threads. I have a small plastic bad taped to my sewing table that I put threads and real small pieces of fabric in. I am going to attach one in front of serger and one on the ironing board. There is carpet in my sewing room which will eventually be replaced so it is necessary to keep those threads corralled. If I forget and drop them on the floor, I use a lint roller to grab them.
So a few little bins around like me then, I actually forgot my Serger catch bin plus my fabric scraps bin! I have tried lint rollers but to no avail, I have also tried a Shower/Window wiper which doesn't do a bad job if I don't want to get out the vacuum. It does sound like you are much tidier than me though! Thanks for your input, no one has said one bin so far 😂
@socarole66 I am definitely not much tidier than you are. I keep the door closed to my sewing room. It's just that we don't like threads getting caught around roller of vacuum.

Wow! Carole, what talent! You did such a fantastic job on that shirt! It looks so professionally made, great job on matching and panel placement! What a sweet little dress, it looks right off the rack and seems to fit her beautifully. I love your version of the cargo pants, they look virtually the same. I had to laugh out loud when you asked the question about the bins, or trash cans as I call them. I have three as well, one by the machines of the day and one by my cutting table. I have my room set up so all the machines can use just two cans, but I still drop threads, bits of fabric that I have trimmed off and anything else that I’m too lazy to reach over and drop into the can. I clean up after each project, so it doesn’t get completely out of hand. My husband can’t understand why I do it and I really can’t explain it. Laziness, I guess. I have three-ish “bins” in my sewing area: there is a thread/scrap catcher in front of my serger, a bin under the serger table, and a bin to the left of my sewing table! I try not to throw or leave threads or scraps on the carpeted floor. If I get tired of annoying little threads from unpicking or whatever, I may leave them on the table top until I can scoop them into a bin all at once 😊 Oops! I just remembered that there is another bin to the left of my ironing board, which is in a different area of the room, away from the sewing tables but still very much a part of my sewing apparatus 😅 Love all your makes! Very well done!
Hi Rhonda, I forgot about my thread catcher under my Overlocker! Sounds like we have the same but you are far more disciplined that me. Yes, when I am unpicking or trimming I leave threads in a pile but the odd bit of fabric or thread still makes it to the floor 😂. Of course I didn't mention the amount of pins I have down there as well but I am better at getting those because of my doggie and grandsons 😊. 1 bin, and I gave up on trying to keep things in the bin. I just throw things on the floor and clean at the end of the week. Love the pants! I must say, I often mash up patterns because it is just to much to buy every pattern that I want to make. The little dress is so cute! Always lovely to spend time in your sewing room.
First of all when I read one bin, I thought you were going to say you diligently put every thread in there and then I read on 😂. Oh Katinka you are just my type of girl, it is our mess and it is only ever us that will clear it up anyway. You are very talented and as you say mix up patterns all the time, I just felt brave! Can there be anything such as too many bins in a sewing/crafting room? Nooooooo!! I have 2 regular bins -- one near my sewing machine and the other near my cutting table. And then I have a couple of plastic bags placed around the room for fabric scraps, etc. And I almost forgot -- there is a small bin attached to my serger that catches the cuttings from that machine. SOMEHOW I still have fabric scraps and threads that make their way to the floor. I'm sure that your husband will still get a lot of wear out of his new shirt even though the band is going to have uniform type shirts now. You could embroider a special design on the back of the new band shirts. That model village was a nice size to be able to walk around. It looked like a fun place to visit. Oh, your grand-daughter looks so sweet in the dress you made for her. I love the color! Have a great week-end!!

I am really hoping that maybe Chris will use the shirt for a holiday/vacation shirt if nothing else, honestly I was so gutted when he told me about the new dress code! The boys loved the model village and yes, it was a lovely size that they could run around and we could see them at all times, Chris and I enjoyed it too! Hi Carole - How romantic! A wedding and an anniversary! I agree, you do have to wait when you send the pattern out.... PDF plotting is US, but I've heard UK people mention local printers. Fabuloso for one, but there are others. The Fold Line prints, so if you get the pattern from them, they can print and then send it. You're fortunate that the commercial patterns still fit you, 😁I sewed with commercial patterns for over 30 years before they didn't work for me anymore. The upside is that indie patterns tend to have actual finishing instructions as you go and many options for customization which I didn't know I needed haha. I have used several NEW Look patterns lately, (thank you! 😁) and know now where and how to adjust for problem areas. I love the music shirt!
Thank you Lynn, it is nice that we get to stay away in a hotel for the wedding and anniversary! There are so many benefits I know to the Independent pattern companies and the sizing on the Big 4 just hasn't really changed for decades. As you say I am lucky that I fit reasonably well into them, I do have to reduce the shoulder width, raise the waist, obviously shorten (they are created for giant women I am sure) and more recently do FBAs. So not quite out of the packet, I did used to be smaller and got so frustrated that the patterns often just started at 10! I am so glad you have found success with patterns though and with your sewing knowledge manage to make the New Look ones work for you. 😊 One day I imagine, there will only be PDFs so I will brace myself for that! I’m American so I just call them trash cans of which I have two and they are never where I need them so I have just resorted to dropping everything on the floor and cleaning it up later 😂. I do have thread catchers hanging from the tables of my most used machines but they usually aren’t where I am working at the time so… on the floor they go. You are not alone!

So you have two and still are like me, it seems everyone is the same judging by the comments. I did wonder if just strapping a bin to my leg or foot may help! I personally and I don't know about you, just want to rush on with a project and dropping every tiny thread in a bin just wastes time. Anyone, the only person that ever cleans up is me anyway😂. I put a mug on my table next to my machines and use it as a mini bin for threads. When project is finished put it in bigger bin. Mind you I still end up with some threads on floor.

However, most trousers are the same principle and all this needed was pocket pieces I already had so seemed a quick solution! I have 2+ bins 1 large bin for everything and another by the cutting table. Also use the catch tray from the 💜🪻💜overlocker for all my thread that I cut while sewing.

I’m working my way through my fabric pile (slowly) Determined to use even the fabric I don’t love if only as toiles. I’ve just bought a tiny little flip top bin for the sewing table to drop in thread - but we’ll see if I actually use it though or whether it still all ends up on the floor! 🤣🤣
Thanks! Honestly there is nothing to be scared with about trousers they are just pj bottoms with extras! I really got into making them after doing lots of scrubs in Covid era and realised how easy they were. Plus, they are so quick to come together, more than some dresses and blouses, I’ll pass on your comment to Katie, thank you. I am currently using some bypassed fabric in my wheel of fate videos and for the first one I have just made I am so pleased with! Now I wonder why I doubted it and didn’t use it before, hope you feel that way with your pile. I have a nice Simplicity one (I think it’s the one you used the pocket piece from for your cargos) so that may be a good first go. I’m really not sure the flip top bin will work for me either. I just make a mess and then hoover later - having crawled around with my magnet to retrieve pins first! Can’t see that changing tbh. 🤣🤣 Looking forward to seeing what you’ve made with your ‘wheel of fortune’ fabric. It’s very satisfying using up existing fabric- I can’t remember even buying some of it! 😀😱

Well done on the Franken-pants, and your husband's shirt is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! You really pulled off a difficult task of making a shirt with panel fabric. No doubt he'll be so pleased with it. Very impressive, Carole!!! My sewing room (prior to boxing a lot of it up), I kept two bins under my sewing machine and one under my cutting table. The two bins under my sewing machine: 1 for fabric and 1 for paper, cardboard, plastic wrap and threads. For small fabric pieces (cottons), I would pull out pieces from time to time, trim them into square and rectangular pieces that I could use in a quilt at some future date All kept in plastic storage boxes according to size. Your daughter's dress is beautiful and she looks so happy wearing it. Your grandbaby's dress is adorable! PLEASE POST PHOTOS NEXT WEEK OF HER IN IT!!! Update: My move to FL has had to be put on hold for a while. This move will cost more than anticipated, so I'll have to go back to work to be able to do so later. However, I'm still sorting and packing boxes in the meantime so when the house goes on the market, it will be decluttered and ready for a move. Hi Dori, first of all I am sorry your move has been delayed, how frustrating for you as you have spent so long packing. As you say though, you will at least be ready to go at a moments notice! I think it is wonderful you sort your scraps and reuse them. I donate my larger pieces and I have another bin for scraps of cotton. So far everyone seems to have multiple bins so I am pleased it wasn't just me having them scattered around. I don't think I will be able to post a picture of Chloe at the wedding sadly. They are being very protective of her 'photo rights' 😂, first time parents and all that. My daughter doesn't worry at all! I will see what I can do though as I can't wait to see Mummy and Chloe wearing similar dresses. I love your name for my Cargos ...Franken-pants, I am keeping that! My five year old granddaughter likes to take the lint roller and roll it all over the floor to collect the threads. Of course while she is doing that she gives me a lecture on why I need to keep my sewing room cleaner.

@socarole66 thank you. I forgot to mention how I corral those threads. I have a small plastic bad taped to my sewing table that I put threads and real small pieces of fabric in. I am going to attach one in front of serger and one on the ironing board. There is carpet in my sewing room which will eventually be replaced so it is necessary to keep those threads corralled. If I forget and drop them on the floor, I use a lint roller to grab them.
So a few little bins around like me then, I actually forgot my Serger catch bin plus my fabric scraps bin! I have tried lint rollers but to no avail, I have also tried a Shower/Window wiper which doesn't do a bad job if I don't want to get out the vacuum. It does sound like you are much tidier than me though! Thanks for your input, no one has said one bin so far 😂
@socarole66 I am definitely not much tidier than you are. I keep the door closed to my sewing room. It's just that we don't like threads getting caught around roller of vacuum.

Wow! Carole, what talent! You did such a fantastic job on that shirt! It looks so professionally made, great job on matching and panel placement! What a sweet little dress, it looks right off the rack and seems to fit her beautifully. I love your version of the cargo pants, they look virtually the same. I had to laugh out loud when you asked the question about the bins, or trash cans as I call them. I have three as well, one by the machines of the day and one by my cutting table. I have my room set up so all the machines can use just two cans, but I still drop threads, bits of fabric that I have trimmed off and anything else that I’m too lazy to reach over and drop into the can. I clean up after each project, so it doesn’t get completely out of hand. My husband can’t understand why I do it and I really can’t explain it. Laziness, I guess. I have three-ish “bins” in my sewing area: there is a thread/scrap catcher in front of my serger, a bin under the serger table, and a bin to the left of my sewing table! I try not to throw or leave threads or scraps on the carpeted floor. If I get tired of annoying little threads from unpicking or whatever, I may leave them on the table top until I can scoop them into a bin all at once 😊 Oops! I just remembered that there is another bin to the left of my ironing board, which is in a different area of the room, away from the sewing tables but still very much a part of my sewing apparatus 😅 Love all your makes! Very well done!
Hi Rhonda, I forgot about my thread catcher under my Overlocker! Sounds like we have the same but you are far more disciplined that me. Yes, when I am unpicking or trimming I leave threads in a pile but the odd bit of fabric or thread still makes it to the floor 😂. Of course I didn't mention the amount of pins I have down there as well but I am better at getting those because of my doggie and grandsons 😊. 1 bin, and I gave up on trying to keep things in the bin. I just throw things on the floor and clean at the end of the week. Love the pants! I must say, I often mash up patterns because it is just to much to buy every pattern that I want to make. The little dress is so cute! Always lovely to spend time in your sewing room.
First of all when I read one bin, I thought you were going to say you diligently put every thread in there and then I read on 😂. Oh Katinka you are just my type of girl, it is our mess and it is only ever us that will clear it up anyway. You are very talented and as you say mix up patterns all the time, I just felt brave! Can there be anything such as too many bins in a sewing/crafting room? Nooooooo!! I have 2 regular bins -- one near my sewing machine and the other near my cutting table. And then I have a couple of plastic bags placed around the room for fabric scraps, etc. And I almost forgot -- there is a small bin attached to my serger that catches the cuttings from that machine. SOMEHOW I still have fabric scraps and threads that make their way to the floor. I'm sure that your husband will still get a lot of wear out of his new shirt even though the band is going to have uniform type shirts now. You could embroider a special design on the back of the new band shirts. That model village was a nice size to be able to walk around. It looked like a fun place to visit. The boys loved the model village and yes, it was a lovely size that they could run around and we could see them at all times, Chris and I enjoyed it too! Hi Carole - How romantic! A wedding and an anniversary! I agree, you do have to wait when you send the pattern out.... PDF plotting is US, but I've heard UK people mention local printers. Fabuloso for one, but there are others. The Fold Line prints, so if you get the pattern from them, they can print and then send it. You're fortunate that the commercial patterns still fit you, 😁I sewed with commercial patterns for over 30 years before they didn't work for me anymore. The upside is that indie patterns tend to have actual finishing instructions as you go and many options for customization which I didn't know I needed haha.
I have used several NEW Look patterns lately, (thank you! 😁) and know now where and how to adjust for problem areas. I love the music shirt!
Thank you Lynn, it is nice that we get to stay away in a hotel for the wedding and anniversary! There are so many benefits I know to the Independent pattern companies and the sizing on the Big 4 just hasn't really changed for decades. As you say I am lucky that I fit reasonably well into them, I do have to reduce the shoulder width, raise the waist, obviously shorten (they are created for giant women I am sure) and more recently do FBAs. So not quite out of the packet, I did used to be smaller and got so frustrated that the patterns often just started at 10! I am so glad you have found success with patterns though and with your sewing knowledge manage to make the New Look ones work for you. 😊 One day I imagine, there will only be PDFs so I will brace myself for that! Carol I love watching your videos, always inspiring. First time commenting. First of all I had to discover what you mean by “bins”. I’m American so I just call them trash cans of which I have two and they are never where I need them so I have just resorted to dropping everything on the floor and cleaning it up later 😂. I do have thread catchers hanging from the tables of my most used machines but they usually aren’t where I am working at the time so… on the floor they go. You are not alone!
Hi Cindy! First of all thank you so much for your comment and taking the time watch my video. When I said bins I didn't think about my transatlantic friends, I am so sorry 🤣. So you have two and still are like me, it seems everyone is the same judging by the comments. I did wonder if just strapping a bin to my leg or foot may help! I personally and I don't know about you, just want to rush on with a project and dropping every tiny thread in a bin just wastes time. Anyone, the only person that ever cleans up is me anyway😂. Thanks Izzy, I have to say just throwing extra pockets on wasn't that hard but I so love them, I need more fabric to make another pair 🤣. I can't wait to see Chris's face as I swear he chose that fabric deliberately to give me a challenge. I'm so glad I did some embroidery again as I had forgotten so much about it, it was a good refresher for Christmas 😉. I forgot about my thread catcher under my overlocker and my fabric bin! This was the week of putting fabric puzzles together!!! Everything turned out SO perfect Carole!!!🎉 they look like they were all bought at a department store!! Oh Zelda, that fabric was a devil to work with! So light and although stretchy had absolutely no recovery. I got it from MyFabrics in Germany.

I put a mug on my table next to my machines and use it as a mini bin for threads. When project is finished put it in bigger bin. Mind you I still end up with some threads on floor.

Congratulations on your anniversary. The cargo pants are great, very creative. I have 5 trash cans (that's what they are called in the states) and I still leave threads and clippings around. The can is never exactly where I am. LOL

Thanks Cindy, I suppose I was being a bit of a miser just not investing in the pattern and I wonder what I would have done if they did a printed pattern?! However, most trousers are the same principle and all this needed was pocket pieces I already had so seemed a quick solution! I am so excited to give Chris that shirt, he kind of knows I have made it but hasn't seen it. 56 years? You are way ahead of us, that is an amazing achievement 😊💗

I keep the sticky lint rollers by each machine and my ironing station. It helps with the threads.

I have 2+ bins 1 large bin for everything and another by the cutting table. Also use the catch tray from the 💜🪻💜overlocker for all my thread that I cut while sewing.

Thanks! Honestly there is nothing to be scared with about trousers they are just pj bottoms with extras! I really got into making them after doing lots of scrubs in Covid era and realised how easy they were. Plus, they are so quick to come together, more than some dresses and blouses, I’ll pass on your comment to Katie, thank you. I am currently using some bypassed fabric in my wheel of fate videos and for the first one I have just made I am so pleased with! Now I wonder why I doubted it and didn’t use it before, hope you feel that way with your pile. A tiny flip top bin just wouldn’t work for me at all, it seems lots of people have many yet still have thread everywhere 😂. Have a great weekend 🧵😊
