    Alarmed by the colossal amount of plastic flushed into Indonesian waters, best friends Notiva Tan and Ovy Sabrina started collecting plastic packaging and wrappers from food stalls in Jakarta two years ago. Now they repurpose the plastic, turning it into building bricks. Their team has already produced over 100,000 eco-bricks and the duo is now looking to expand their reach. Indonesia has pledged to reduce plastic waste by about 75 per cent over the next four years.

      Governments are quite insulated and too bureauceatic to have the necessary sense of urgency to tackle larger problems promptly. It's always some else's problem, or more study is required, or they bogged down with 'more pertinent' work. Not blaming anyone, just laying it out there.

      @heimer donger i dont know. I recalled a article about using plastic bricks backs in the 80's and the studies showed that the bricks would expand in high heat which causes it's structure to not be safe but most importantly that the recycled plastic would emit deadly chemicals that causes cancer to the inhabitants.

    Depending on the cost of the Rebricks, this could be a cheaper alternative to cinder blocks, concrete blocks/pavers, retaining walls. Possibly used for concrete patch & repair potholes. More testing is needed.

    The bricks are probably not as durable because each piece of plastic means a blockage of the bonds that would have been connected amongst the cements / mud material. In other words, there are lot of micro cracks within the bricks, assuming that it's a simple mixture of conventional bricks material and plastic with no secrete glue. However if the bricks are just used to pave sidewalk or pavement or some light loading use, it's ok. Recycling material has never short of ideas but it's the mass scale production cost that stop product designers to recycle material into their products. In Indonesia, I suppose labor cost is much lower. The business is also a local small scale business too.

      I agree and disagree. Some uses, not sure which, this is probably a suitable product for. In North America some plastics are recycled into "composite lumber" and are used for decks and fences and probably some other uses. However these, generally, can't be used inside. This is because this type of material is far too combustible. And this part of where I have to disagree.
      Also I believe that using these bricks for where vehicles and high volume pedestrian traffic situations is incorrect. Primarily because I believe these bricks will abraid to become micro-plastics. The problem being is these abrasions will get flushed out into the soil and or the ocean where they get into the food chain and ultimately we end up ingesting them in some manor.
      I think the ladies have a great idea, but the product needs to undergo some testing to determine the ability to withstand abrasion, flammability testing and UV breakdown. There is a place for this product it's just finding the correct application.

    Although I'm totally on board with making use of plastic that would otherwise end up in a landfill or improperly recycled, I think the angle of the micro-plastic runoff that bricks like these would create should be given some thought if it were to be implemented in the long term. We've already seen what effect the runoff of car tire rubber, particularly the chemicals the tires hold, have in local water reservoirs (a local freshwater lake was polluted with the runoff chemicals and the salmon in the water were killed off in mass. Though if the plastic they're recycling is at least held together and kept on land, rather than in the water where it was otherwise destined to go, then this solution should receive some funding to make the process as clean as possible and replicated.

    There are companies making spacial brics out of plastic wast, which contains a high porportion of plastic and even has special positive characteristics.
    This is just adding/hidding some plastic waste into/in normal brics. This mixture can have negative effect on the ballance, quality and stability of those concrete brics.

    This lady is creative but if this material is not approved according to construction standard guidelines then it would be a safety hazard. Material strength should be extensively researched for years before it can be use for real life application. Making bricks and concrete aren't as easy as ABC. Lab testing and research papers must be released to show if the materials actually up to standard, like fire resistance, loading, lifespan, chemistry, erosion etc. Also, what is the environmental impact? Did she think of that? Did she follow the environmental standard guidelines? Just best friends making bricks...wow so convincing...

The thing with materials is they don't lasted forever, everyday they break down into smaller and smaller pieces (wood, stone, plastics, etc...) That isn't something that we can control, it's all a natural process. Also either way plastics will break down, what would be better? We see so many innovative ideas across different social media sites which helps in reducing pollution. However it is shocking that it is not supported by any govt dept across the world. One of basic thing we can do is teach ourself n our next gen the negatives of pollution to a great extent so that the world becomes a better place.

    Take one fact of this. This material is dangrous for starters plastic burns meaning its a fire hazard. Essentially building a house out of it means you are living in a candle same applies to wood.

  • @cajunlogicdiy
    @cajunlogicdiy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mixing plastic in with cement is not making anything. They only found a new way to store it until it decomposes. If they melted the plastic and add less than 25% of other materials, then you are making something with plastic. Adding plastic as aggregate is not recycling.

    Its great idea to recycle plastic but those bricks are cannot be used as a alternative to conventional sand bricks due to safety issues . Please dont use it for building houses it will be disaster if fire catches. It can be used for outdoor purposes like gardening,fencing, and other. By the way nice initiative.
