I hate when people ask me to move my seat. I travel solo most of the time. I'm also scared to fly and prep my seat in advance with the airlines. A lot of the time, this arrangement can cost an extra $50-$200. So it grinds my gears when someone aggressively asks me to switch, because s/he was separated from a spouse/sibling/whoever. PICK YOUR SEATS IN ADVANCE, PEOPLE. IT IS CALLED THE INTERNET.
We always choose our seats ahead of time. Despite our planning we have been split up several times and had to ask ppl to switch because we don't want our kids sitting alone on a transoceanic flight. They need help occasionally and we'd rather ask ppl to switch than to parent our kids.
+jnx37 I'd ask customer service and the check-in desks to help first. If I had no luck, then I'd ask the flight attendants for assistance. Usually people will volunteer but try not to pressure one person. 😊 If I paid an extra $200, I'm not saying "no" to be mean.
+Rachel Elizabeth The amount of times we've booked particular seats online but then our seats were changed when we got to the gate. It's ok with older children - but when they put your 2 year old all by themselves five rows ahead of you....I can't tell you how frustrating that is. Frustrating for us, as well as for the people we need to talk to. How awful would it be for that other person to have some random 2 year old sitting next to them scared and crying for their mother? Drives me crazy that airlines do this. Airlines!! If we dang well book seats, please honour that booking! And when we say, "Uhm - our kid is two....." and the gate agent says, "Well, you'll just have to ask people on the plane to switch". GAH!
Airlines need to honor their bookings better, I agree. I've only ever had my seat changed once, but they moved me closer to the front of the plane so it wasn't a big deal. The problem, like I said, is when I pay extra money to reserve "choice" seats (American airlines does this) in economy. These are usually located over the wing and near the front of the cabin. I feel bad saying "no," but an extra $200 is a lot of money and I don't wanna ask strangers to pay me! :( If all seats in economy cost the same amount, it'd be less of an issue. I would just appreciate it if people directed their frustration where it belongs: the airlines' botched booking, not me.
madiantin I know your post was a while ago when you posted, but separating a child under the age of I believe 12, is illegal and the airline cannot do this, it is up to the air crew to sort it out,and there is no way that I would have allowed my two year old to sit by themselves next to strangers.
+Curt Lewis I have had people pull my hair that way! It was not intentional, but when they grabbed the seat at the top, they caught some of my hair along with it.
When Flying Southwest Airlines a couple will sit one person in the window seat and the other in the aisle, leaving the middle seat open in the hopes that nobody will dare sit there and they will have the whole row to themselves. That NEVER WORKS because the flights are always sold out. Instead the couple gets pissed at the person who had the audacity to sit in between them and foil their big plan to get an extra seat for free. Then they talk over you the whole way and treat you like you did something wrong. Listen, you knew, or should have known, that flights are booked solid these days. Sit next to your own damn relative because you are not fooling anybody and just making the trip miserable for everybody. That is all!
Blanca W I once got "picked" to sit by a couple like that...they would sit aisle and window and wait for a slender person like me to come by and offer me the aisle seat so they wouldn't get a fat person! They were a bit crazy...stinky food and a dog that got out of her carrier a few times. It was weiiiiird
That's why I NEVER travel by Southwest!! I traveled them only once and it was an extreme emergency!! If an airline does not have *ASSIGNED SEATING* then I simply don't use them, no ifs ands or buts!!!
It's a strategy to try to get more room, but when my wife and I do it, we hope nobody will sit there, but if someone does, we're not angry at the person. Instead, we offer them the choice of aisle or window.
From a solo travellers perspective, nothing annoys me more than being asked by a couple or friends travelling together whether I can swap seats with them especially after I've settled in, and normally the seat you're exchanging is much less desirable. So you're left with feeling like the bad guy for saying "NO".
+TheTraveler Yep, you're the bad guy for saying no. What's wrong with helping out folks traveling together to sit with each other? If you don't want to end up in a middle seat, then just say that, but just because you're "already settled in"?
Antonio Kinsey Yep. That right. If I am already settled in with bags in the overhead lockers and blanket over me and earphones already on ready to sleep when takeoff. Fuck them for even dare asking to swap seats.
TheTraveler Lol, blanket over you, and earphones on while boarding still in process, waiting to snap at anyone daring to ask you you for anything, …funny visual.
Antonio Kinsey lol...traveling adults that can't even be bothered to summon some discipline to book their tickets earlier online to secure seats and expect others to help them out..what is this? a charity?
@@goodra999 Shower just before you leave, add powder or corn starch over the deodorant & ASAP see a doctor or Nurse Practitioner for your excessive sweating. It's a real medical condition that is curable. You'll be SO glad you did.
Also, my pet peeve. if you have already put your stuff in the overhead SIT DOWN. Don't get up and fumble with your stuff while folks are trying to board to the rear of the plane.
Parents failing to control their kids - YES!! In particular, kids kicking the sh*t out of your seat from behind. I mean, if their own PARENTS won't tell them to stop, what are you supposed to do?!
I remember the first time I ever flew, I was sitting by a mom and her baby. I heard plenty of people grumble about her baby and she kept apologizing when her baby would make any sound. She was clearly exhausted and it obviously wasn't their first flight that day. At one point, she fell asleep with the baby, but the baby woke up first. I felt bad for her, so I dug through her baby bag and gave him some baby cereal. When he was satisfied, I gave him my keys to play with and talked to him for a while. After about 30 minutes, the mom woke up. She felt awful, but I told her not to worry. I had fun playing with the little guy and she deserved a nap. She looked like she was about to cry when she thanked me. I didn't think anything of it at the time, because I didn't realize how rude people could be to parents on airlines. When did people stop genuinely caring about those around them?
We were on a flight with little kids behind us kicking the seats, but the mother apologized profusely. Being a mother of 4 and nana to 2 it didn’t bother me one bit, and the fact she felt so bad...well how can you get angry 😊 they did stop btw!
I posted about my change in attitude regarding young children on flights (and in public in general). I'm an only child raised by older parents 60 years ago and for too long I was not empathetic. I ASSumed everyone should handle their children as MY parents did and that all kids should act as I did. This made me a real grump on planes, with a negative attitude. Which made me more miserable than any kids actually did. So I've had to adjust my perspective and it's made me a happier traveler as well as a better person. (Noise canceling headphones have been a big help, too) 😅
+woltersworld Speaking of Children on a plane... My husband and I were travelling from Florence to Madrid last summer and we ended up seated next to a child of maybe 7 years old. Right away I thought it was odd that the mother was sitting across the aisle from him. (Yes you could say those were the only seats left however I feel like if you are travelling with a small child it is your responsibility to make sure you are sitting with them) Anyhow this child was the worst. The entire flight he was kicking the seats in front of him, grabbing at my husbands things, letting the tray fall down then putting it up to let it fall again, yelling to his grandmother who was sitting at the back of the plane, running up and down the aisles, yelling mom mom mom mom mom to his mother who I kid you not pretended to be asleep the entire time! Not once did she even attempt to control him. The flight attendant came over three times and asked her to control the child! At one point the snack cart came by and he started grabbing things off of it and his mother literally just watched him do it and did nothing. The flight attendant had to sort of slap his hands away and the mom still said nothing. He was ripping up all the in flight magazines in front of him while his mom watched so my husband took them away from him and told him to stop. We kept looking at his mother and telling her to do something and she literally would just turn away and pretend to be asleep again. It was the worst experience I have ever had on a plane. I was so upset with the child but more upset with the mother. I get it maybe you are exhausted and your child is a horror and he has been driving you crazy for your entire vacation but that is not the rest of the flights issue! At least try to control him! Ughhh anyway that is an experience I will never forget.
+melissa lord You have just described about 1/3rd of all kids I have seen on planes. Another 1/3rd are equally noisy, but not quite as physical as you mention, and the final 1/3rd are only annoying part time.
The general rule is: if you're stuck in the middle seat, that person usually get's the arm rests. The people on the aisles and windows, have the option to shift themselves to a more comfortable position since there's no one sitting on one of the sides next to them. The middle seat person has no choice, and no room to shift. Therefore, generally, the person in the middle should get the arm rests.
+Casey Vee right. So, when that happens, observe when that person isn't using the armrest. Then, stake your position. He or she will soon realize that the middle person really has the shortened of the stick, and won't be as aggressive. And will even give you the whole thing. Now, sitting next to a fat person, is more challenging.
I think it's more about aggressive armrest holders who are so obsessive over their position they won't move- that's why he kept bringing up the fact he nor his family members could pass because they'd continually sit down, locked down on the arm rests. (People do, do this, their insecurity leads to their wanton control of the situation which is just uncomfortable and turns them into a total pain in the ass for everyone.) I think Mark travels enough to understand the general rule of seats per armrest, window, and aisle leg room.
A corollary to the tip about not being stinky is.....don't wear a lot of perfume/cologne. Besides the fact that many people are allergic to scents, a heavy, overpowering scent is just as annoying as not using deodorant.
I enjoy opera, but certainly would not expose fellow travelers to my music... or fragrances, noises, conversation... keep things as neutral as possible.
Ugh, yes! Thank you for saying this one! I have optical migraines when I am around someone who wears lots of perfume or cologne for extended periods of time. I lose vision in my left eye and it's not exactly considerate to begin with.
Anymore? I've flown for 50 years and there have always been rude people on planes. At least there are no inconsiderate smokers blowing smoke into the "smoke free" section these days.
Kid's don't bother me especially if they are happy. I flew back home from visiting family in Michigan. There was a little boy in front of me. He said he gets scared taking off I told him it is fun and I enjoy the takeoff. He wasn't scared. He told me about his super heroes. His mother felt bad I said he was a pleasure to talk to. He asked a lot of good questions and that is how a child learns. I understand that I was that kid once and would rather make him feel welcome than feel like he is in jail because you add stress to anyone they act differently.
@@evan4856 True, but remember if a child gets an ear/headache from the pressure change they will cry. (I often get headaches upon descent & they are awful.)
I was that kid once so this couple talked to me for the whole flight. She taught me Spanish and I taught her English and the guy gave my mnms. I’d be fine having a kid like that so I can help like how they and how you helped that kid.
I think the number-one thing airlines could do to eliminate a LOT of the on-board passenger conflicts, would be to just give everyone more space. The seats need to be wider and further apart.
Last flight the guy in front of me asked if it was OK if he reclined his seat for a while. Of course, it's his seat and he should be able to use its features but it was nice he thought to ask.
I find it hard to see it that way. It's his seat, yes, bit when he reclines it it's your space he's taking. If he asks me in a nice way I allow them to take some of my space so they can be more comfortable. But reclining without asking or not asking politely is a big no.
14) People who wear perfume/cologne or any scent.... Strong scent..... Migraine trigger for 3 hr flight. Also 15), one passenger in front of me took out her nail polish before plane moved and though the flight attendants were suspicious of the smell, they did nothing. I had to beg her to stop.... These are dangerous migraine and asthma triggers for some passengers... Curb the vanity...
I was flying back from Tokyo earlier this year. The plane was all dark so people could sleep, including me. These people across the aisle from me were sleeping with eye masks on but they left their overhead lights on. It was angled so it was pointing right at me when I was trying to sleep. That was super annoying! Turn your lights off, people, when you're not using them.
If you have a window seat there is sometimes a little space between your seat and the window. I have had the person behind me stretch out her legs and put her feet through the space resting on my arm rests and then have the nerve to get rude when I asked her to please move her feet. I wasn't interested in an overnight flight to Europe with someone's feet beside me.
Same thing happened to me the other day when I was flying back from Panama. I told the man to move is feet, and he responded by shouting at me for 5 minutes before the flight attendant moved my seat up to the 2nd row, which was awesome.
@@Thecollectingman42 Someone who is rude enough to put their feet on the armrest in front of them would certainly take offense at your direction to remove them: just a rude, inconsiderate person.
I travel with a service dog... I have 2... but only travel on a plane with my small breed service dog... many people get loud and obnoxious that my dog is in my lap, or he's going to be a noisy dog (he's a 3lb chihuahua)... no one really notices him because when he's working he's not playing or barking... he only makes a noise if my blood sugar drops or he senses I'm going into a panic attack or anxiety issues.
Service and working dogs are so well trained. A blood sugar chi!! My dobi/lab was ours when I developed a brain tumor and she taught the new pit/rott puppy to alert when I was having seizure activity. She in turn taught 4 chiX rescues to do the same and I still have the four. Mine aren’t trained and certified though so I couldn’t take them on a plane.
Grabbing the back of each aisle seat when you're walking, especially in the middle of the night on a long-haul flight. Its hard enough to try to sleep in the aisle seat with out having some one making you bounce up & down every half an hour or so.
On my 16-hour flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg last year, the guy sitting next to me watched 50 Shades of Gray like three times. I was rather uncomfortable lol
I had a guy open up a soft porn magazine next to me. I took out my ipad and in 20-pt font I started a poem titled Pathetic Old Perv . It detailed the antics of a stoop-shouldered, pot bellied, balding weirdo who looks at porn in public. That shut him down pretty fast.
The passenger that is sick and coughs constantly without covering up. Try a mask if flying is absolutely necessary, otherwise wait until you are well. Had a 6 hour flight that was full and the guy next to me was very sick and coughing. Guess what, I was ill the next day.
Agree 100%. I just came back from my holiday a week ago and this woman in the seat in front of me was coughing and spluttering for the entire flight - at the start no one else was coughing, by the end there were at least 10 people coughing in and around this area of the plane. I don't know if that's just group psychology or coincidence or what, but the over the next few days I'd developed a cough as well. It's disgusting, wear a mask if you're fucking ill on a plane or don't fly at all. Really wound me up, that, because I was perfectly healthy before that flight.
Yep. And they say “toddlers are just like that.” I have a toddler and I’m about to fly on a plane and no, you can get up and take your child to the back of the plane to calm them down, you can talk to your pediatrician about melatonin, you can take control as a parent on a plane. Many parents forget that a rambunctious toddler running around on a plane is a safety hazard! It’s ridiculous!
And just what is the 100% foolproof method of controlling another human being? People always talk about it but I don't hear any suggestions on solutions. Spanking is considered a no no by some. You get CPS called on you. I always cared and I tried my best to make my kids mind. I was embarrassed by some of my childrens behaviors.
Yes, that can be annoying but if you don't tell them that you don't want it right now after listening for a while, you do have yourself to blame as well. I was on the other end once. I talked to someone who seemed to listen very interested, which was why I kept talking and when I later listend to music on my headphones he talked behing my back about how annoying I was as he thought I didn't hear him. Then I took my headphones off and said "Why didn't you just tell me earlier?" She didn't really have an answer the that. Of course I do know that people want to be polite but there are polite ways out of a conversation as well.
Haven't had that for years. Takes me back. I flew from Manchester England to Newark NJ recently and tried to converse with the two American ladies next to me. One smiled politely. Gave short replies. The other glared at me as though I just asked her to join the mile high club. No. Really. Uggh. I was just being a friendly Brit. P.S. I have lots of American relatives. Its just seems to be people everywhere now.
I think it's perfectly fine to take both armrests if you are in the middle. The aisle seat gets extra legroom and easy aisle access (1 armrest) the window gets a view and somewhere to lean their head (1 armrest) and the middle gets to sit uncomfortably with nowhere to stretch their legs or rest their head, they deserve both armrests, if the window and aisle got 2 each then the middle would get none.
I agree! I’m a pretty big guy. I HAVE to take both armrests. There is simply no place to put my arms. Even if I clench my arms along my sides, they still hang over the armrests.
The MOST annoying thing that people do on planes (and that never gets talked about) is people who are too lazy to get up to go to the toilet and instead decide to remain seated and fart on the plane.
11:11 Mark, you might be interested to know that it's not the food itself that causes it to be flavourless - airlines actually OVERspice the food. It's a combination of factors: dry air diminishes taste and the pressurisation of the cabin also causes the mucus membranes to swell, making it even more difficult to taste what you're eating. Aditionally, the constant white noise produced by all the mechanics and electronics appears to draw your attention away from flavour as well.
+Lau Ra Stinky food to the max, with prices for fewer and fewer air sickness bags skyrocketing. Could that be a business opportunity or am I channeling an Evil Overlord or is my inner BOFH surfacing?
Sad part is that there is people who just don't care about other passengers or (i don't understand how) don't realize what they are doing. On a trip from Chile to France I had a man next to me who did not stop moving, singing to what he has listening and literally emulating as if he was playing the drums with his food tray. And in front of him an English dude was seating and he looked behind him a lot of times with a "wtf is wrong with this guy" so many times... I felt his pain. He did not stop, not once through the 14 hours...
There are certain medical conditions that, as hard as it is to believe, do bring with them a lack of self-awareness, and usually politely bringing it to the person's attention that whatever they're doing is actually really annoying to the people around them will get them to stop. Even if that isn't the reason, still bring it to their attention.
Big thumbs up about the kids thing. I am not a father, but neither am I the one to complain loudly - unless parents who don't care let their kids run wild. But then I complain about the parents, not about the kids. The kids don't know better if their parents don't tell them how to behave and keep them entertained during a flight. I have had kids on a plane that were a real pain in the ... (you know where), kicking my seat back for hours, screaming all the time - but I also had the opposite - when I flew from Detroit to Orlando some years ago, the girl sitting in my row (~4 yrs old I'd guess) asked her daddy sitting between her and me as we were approaching Orlando "...but daddy, where IS florida? And where is Mickey?" 100% cuteness. :-)
when a girl with very long hair, sitting in front of me, drapes it over the back of her seat and reclines her seat while I'm eating and her hair is so close to my food. I did ask her kindly not to do that. she was very apologetic and said she didn't realize that happened..so it was all fine but lol I was nervous to approach her in case she wasn't a nice person.
Unwashed body odor is just rude! It's usually young guys who partied all night, or slept in a questionable place before they got on the plane. It's not just an American thing. Clean yourself before you have to share a close space. Some people may not wear deodorant. While not idea, it's not a big deal for me. I'm talk'n dirty/nasty! :-/
The primary thing is have a shower/bath and clean clothes. Some people swim in cologne/deoderant which can be just as bad. I do all of this and use a cologne which is light and hasnt been applied immediately before getting onto the plane.
When you mentioned smells, you should have included perfumes and colognes. Floral scents especially annoy my allergies. Expect me to cough, choke, and sneeze from your chosen scent.
Change a diaper at the seat? I guess if someone has two children and can't leave one of them but I really think you should do this in the bathroom. I have seen this more than once and that is why I always travel with antibacterial wipes to clean off the drop table. I have had small children spit up on me before and I can live with it because it was not done on purpose but please really think twice before you change a diaper at the seat, (end of rant).
If you see someone pull out a nappy and start getting ready for a change, try chatting to them and offer to watch one of their kids while they take the other to the bathroom to change....changing in the seat is truly one of my pet peeves, I'd rather watch an ankle-biter for ten minutes than deal with that.
Changing a wet diaper takes 5 seconds and doesn't really smell though. I've done it. Bathrooms are disgusting and have no room. Definitely don't change a poopy diaper in your seat though. Ew.
Rule number 2 doesn't apply if there's 3 seats side by side. The middle guy has the worst seat so he gets both armrests. The guy by the windows gets a window, the guy by the aisle gets extra leg room. So I don't mind if the guy in the middle gets both armrests. Of course if it's a large row of 4 or 5 seats in the middle, then you have to share. I think the thing that annoyed me the most on a plane, is that we were all seated in our designated spots. Plenty of empty seats on the plane for people to (almost) all get a window seat. But we were told to wait until seatbelt signs turned off before doing that. But some guys didn't wait and crossed the whole plane to take those seats, so the guy next to me couldn't get the window seat he was waiting for in front of us... I also got the opposite once. I was alone in a row of 3, by the window. And then this woman comes from the back, and took both seats left, kicking me while she was sleeping. Wtf...
The thing that really annoys me on a plane is reclining seats. On one flight I had a glass of orange juice on the table and the woman in front suddenly reclined the seat back tipping orange juice all over my lap. I was pinned in and also suffer with claustraphobia. I asked an air hostess for some napkins. She ignored that and told the person in front to pull her seat up, which of course was a relief, but I still couldn't move unless I dropped a puddle of orange juice all over the floor and my bags. Luckily the kind gentleman next to me got up and went to the bathroom to get some hand towels so I could dry myself off. I have no idea why the seats should be able to recline. There's no room and it's not practical. Grr.
Oh i agree with you so much ! I just met a whole family of 6 ppl that reclined their seats to maximum and my son's orange juice almost knocked over. The stewardess asked her to incline back up but afterwards they all reclined again. I hope they ban seats recline coz they r not practical in such a tight space.
I have no idea what planes you're flying on but every plane ive been on the seat only reclines like half an inch. I dont understand how that could interfere with anyone. I usually dont even bother reclining my seat because it makes basically no difference.
I was taking a long haul with a friend that has claustrophobia. Because or seats was at the far back of the plane we weren't able to recline them, so she told the person in front of her to please not recline his seat, and he answered with "we'll see" - so guess what, he fully reclined the seat not long after that. He didn't pull up his seat until a stewardess told him to - after she had seen my friend pacing in the aisle (because it was such small space between her and the chair in front of her) and told her that she couldn't just keep doing that (she was understanding when my friend told her the reason why).
Awesome channel! I LOVE your work! I guess that I am weird, but I thoroughly enjoy flying w/ people's kids! I travel a lot in America and now that our kids are grown, the wife and I are investigating overseas travel. (I'll prolly watch all of your stuff multiple times!) On the kids thing - recently a woman was having a bit of trouble w/ her son crying (he was 4 and terrified) and the comments from other passengers was so bad that she started to cry herself. I was sitting across the aisle and it got so bad that I stood up and proved that American Southerners can be way more rude than anyone else on earth and told the woman to swap seats w/ me. The look on her face,....I am sure that she was terrified.... In about 3 minutes I had her son laughing and talking a blue streak. Finally, she figured out that I wasn't the "booger Man" and we had such a pleasant conversation that a 3 hour flight turned into what seemed like less than an hour! I couldn't help but noticing that when we debarked, none of the complainers could look me in the eye,.... Really folks,.... you have a lot of people in a small space, and it isn't like you can get up and leave,.... a little kindness: a tiny bit of compassion and understanding; can turn a long flight into a short hop and all ya really gotta do is try to be a bit more considerate of other people's situation and feelings - and it doesn't cost a dime,...it's FREE! :=))
I enjoy your videos a lot. What I don't like about other passengers is when they forced you to change your seat. Usually I changed it but sometimes they are just super impolite and they will bully you into accepting.
I was on a flight from Los Angeles to Germany and the woman in front of me was traveling with her extremely hyperactive son, her friend and that woman's son. The hyper kid was completely out of control but the mom spent the entire flight ignoring him and talking with her friend. He was yelling, kicking seats, moving his seat back and forth, and he manage to spill a cup of orange juice between the seats and onto my shoes. The mom didn't even apologize. During her conversation with her friend, it came to light that the kid was on ritalin, but she had withheld his meds because she didn't want him to be off his schedule due to the time difference. I understand the logic, but if you're going to do something like that, you need to be on top of the situation and do everything you can to keep your child calm. She did nothing.
+Kat Posell Parents somehow become blind and deaf to their misbehaving kids. Not defending it for one minute, but I have been next to a kid in a very fine restaurant, who was SCREECHING at the top of his lungs, and the mom was acting like nothing whatsoever was happening.
Drinking too much is my pet peeve. I've seen some pretty obnoxious behavior due to booze. I have few issues with kids, but drunk passengers are the worst. Yeah, helping a frazzled parent is a great idea. One flight I was on a father of teenagers helped a couple w/a toddler. It was taking forever to deplane and the baby was getting fussy. The guy offered to hold the child while the parents got their stuff organized. He had the magic touch and the kid calmed down and started to snooze.
Watching this seven years later, Mark you are so hilarious, the "fat guy'' commentary was fantastic. So looking forward to having beer with you. Cheers Malcolm New Zealand.
Pad Ful I know the pain literally. 6'4 and a quarter and still growing. One time this guy that was sporting the attire that gets a sunburn on his head and yells at you for no reason was sitting in front of me and I knew he'd try to recline his seat back all the way so I jimmied his seat temporarily so it wouldn't recline. He got pissed off and I said Argo fuck yourself
Great video. From my own experience as a frequent flier, I never put my seat back on a domestic flight unless it is a red eye and everyone is sleeping. On long overseas flights same thing, not during meal services and wait until the lights go down and most people are trying to sleep. If I'm at an aisle or window, I more or less cede the armrests to the center seat within reason. If I am next to a larger person, I do insist the armrest in between is down, I've had people sit down and try to raise them. You have the right idea with kids. I did have a flight from BWI to Aruba. Parents with two kids were sitting on opposite aisle seats with the kids on the aisle on row ahead. My wife and I had the center and window next to one of them. This kid kicked the seat in front for 3.5 hours with no intervention from the parents. When we started getting off, the man in front of him was glaring at me. I did inform him sort of loudly that this was not my child and I would never have allowed any of my children to kick his seat like that on a flight. Not sure why they parents allowed this and even more why thy didn't put them next to them. Surely if they were able to get four aisle seats they could have rather had a center and window for the kids next to them.
You described this in such an intertaining way---very informative too---you had me cracking up ! I would be pleased to fly next to you and your family anytime ! Take care....
"Really, dude? Come on..." is the most I've ever heard/seen you been upset about anything, you are so good-natured! Also I love the idea of helping parents instead of complaining.
this applies to public transportation and going out to restaurants too... I would add that people play loud phone calls, tv shows or music on their phones... just buy headphones. No one wants to hear your phone conversation, listen to your bad music or show. And being in Colorado, stop smoking or vaping in a crowd waiting to cross the street at the cross walk, and don't smoke on a bus or in a building... no one wants to be force mind altered.
When I am doing local and domestic travel I ALWAYS ask the person behind if it would be ok to put my seat back. I never put it back without first asking. It's called Etiquette and Manners. Only sit in aisle or centre-aisle seats. Make life easy. On board air conditioning replaces the entire volumetric content of the entire cabin and hold in 15 minutes.
I'd add not bringing stuff for any kids traveling with you to do to the list. I don't care if the flight is 30 minutes or 20 hours BRING things to that will keep the kids traveling with you entertained. I love children & enjoy talking to them & interacting & playing with them. That said I don't enjoy your little darling who is behaving like a brat because you didn't bother to bring things for them to do. I'm single & don't have kids so I'm not going to have child appropriate entertainment items with me & I shouldn't be expected to entertain your kid because you're too lazy, inconsiderate, uncaring etc. to be bothered to bring things for your kid to do.
Excellent video Mark. Funny that none of these things bug me or I haven't experienced many. Never sat near a smelly passenger. Never sat in an area where someone brought in stinky food. Never had an abrupt seat recliner. Kids don't bother me. I once sat next to a guy with a cold who didn't cover his mouth 100% of the time. I finally put on my surgical mask...he still didn't get the hint.
Adding to #9: I've been on flights before where the flight was landing late, and people were going to miss their connecting flights if they didn't get off immediately. They let the flight attendants know, the flight attendants double checked their claims and then made an announcement asking everyone to stay seated until those people / groups exited the plane. Some people were still buttholes and try to get off with them, but most people understood and stayed seated.
#6: I had a 20-something seated next to me on a flight one time and he took off his old disgusting tennis shoes to rest his stinky bare feet. We're talking a Limburger cheese stinky smell that began to waft through the cabin. I looked over at him and calmly said, "Put your shoes back on." He did.
A big pet peeve of mine are people who don't make reservations ahead of time then expect everyone who did to change seats. I booked an aisle seat so I didn't have to squeeze in between 2 people. if you or your kid don't want to squeeze in, book ahead or take a different flight where you can book the seats you want. I've almost missed connections several times after being bumped from row 6 to the last row or two in the plane. A man with kids was disgusting enough to have the flight attendant separate me and my 82yr old grandmother on the way to her medical appointments so he could sit with his kids up front. I explained our connection to the flight attendant who thought I was a moron and assured me everyone would allow me to exit the plane first so I could make our connection. I was the last person off the plane and they paged us continuously as we bolted as fast as we could. Then another selfish moron didn't think he should have to get out of our again row 6 seat because we were late. Of course the 82yr old put of breath woman can hike back to your reserved seat to save you the inconvenience...
I can't help but to have that sinking feeling of, "this is gonna suck," when there's kids nearby, but I don't say anything about it. I just shut up and ignore it, but it does make me mentally tired.
+woltersworld No worries, lol. I'm sure your kids are very well behaved on planes since they're so well travelled. I'm not, "that guy," that would actually vocally complain about someone's KIDS in public. That's beyond rude, but I'd be dishonest to not admit that my inner monologue consists of groans if I'm by a kid. I'd never say it aloud though.
Bravo, bravo, bravo. Thank you so much for finally telling people off. There must be politeness on a plane. I have sat by the best behaved and the worst behaved kids and agreed, help out the Mum or Dad and you help your self. Thank for this video.
No offense to Mark but he would be considered obese. I'm at about 270, roughly the same size as Mark and I'm considered obese. One of his cruise videos, he has a photo of him wearing a double x life preserver.
Who cares what size he is? I wouldn’t have any problem sitting next to a heavier person, just like I wouldn’t mind sitting next to a tall/short person.
The worst flight I had was with a high school senior trip on board....they were soooooo loud and rowdy! The teachers & chaperones did their best but it didn't help much. I just kept reminding myself that they're kids, they're super excited, and it could be their first trip away from their parents, by plane or even ANYWHERE. Reminding myself of that made it easier on me and my patience level...eventually they DID quiet down.
Things that piss me off on a plane: people who sit near windows and insist on not using them, people who drop SBDs, getting kicked by the person behind me. Ways I’ve (unintentionally) annoyed people on a plane: draping my waist-length ponytail over the back of my seat (I cut it off the week after I got back)
you should do 13 things (or more or less) things to annoy people at an airport. The most annoying is people not having their documents prepared passports visa money
+Roman Soiko YES! I can't believe the people who get up to the agent to check in, and have nothing they should have! THEN, they have the nerve to start bitching because the gate agent is asking for the necessary papers, passport, whatever.
I had someone sitting next to me eat a sandwich he brought on board right before takeoff. When he finished scarfing it down, he took his hands and wiped all the crumbs/debris from his tray directly onto my pants! Absolutely disgusting. How stupid can someone be?
One day my dad and I we're coming home from Paris and all we could think was eww who need some deodorant and to shower. We later found out it was the cheese my dad was bring home for my grandma 😂😂😂😂😂 but it was some good STINKY cheese
I was farted in a department store and they evacuated it thinking there was a gas leak..I kid you not.....mortifying...anyway 48 hours before I fly I avoid: wheat, dairy, onions and cabbage...at least that way it wont be as offensive to others.
Maybe I've been lucky, but I've only run into one entitled jerk ever. This guy tried to hog half a luggage compartment for his laptop, and when a flight attendant took it out to put my bigger bag in, he went NUTS! He grabbed my bag, shoved it in my face, and told me to get lost because "I was here first!" When the attendant came back to sort it out, he chewed her out because "I'm a paying customer; why do you care about them more?" Delta removed him from the flight after some maneuvering (thank god).
Monique J well, some people doesn’t have the money to go to a hospital due to high medical cost. Sometimes, aisle seats aren’t available at all. That’s the risk of you sitting on an aisle seat, which is getting bothered by someone needing to go to the bathroom.
I found your page when I was looking for fun things to do in Atlanta . On my flight ✈️ back home there was a couple of folks that needed to make. A connecting flight to Dubai, the flight attendant informed everyone if you could just stay in your seats so they can leave - most of us stayed but a few knuckleheads had the nerve to actually not why would you do that like really it’s a common kind easy thing to do for someone else so do it .
You might be a big guy, but you are so stinkin' cute. Your personality is captivating. (Sorry Joselyn...but you know that better than anyone else :) lol. Great videos, my hubster and I are avid travelers and we've enjoyed every one of them!
Hey Mark. I wanted to thank you for all the helpful tips and tricks and things you’ve talked about in several videos about planning for a trip. It’s has been very useful and helpful. My wife and I are going to Mexico on Sunday (July 21st). We are celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary and your tips about Mexico have been very helpful. Thank you for all you do. Air high five buddy.
How to keep your kids quiet on the plane.... BENADRYL! Period. Give them 1 tablet 30 mins before the flight. They will be sleeping happily for at least a good 6 hrs LOL
Everyone knows the middle person gets both armrests. the window seat gets a window, the isle person gets easy isle access. The double armrest is compensation for the uncomfortable seat in the middle.
About the air in the cabin, that's a misconception, that it's recirculated like that. Most times, they have inlets or the like in or near the jets, and the majority of the air you're breathing comes directly outside. It may seem stuffy, but that's for completely different reasons. It may seem so weird, but yes, most of the air you're breathing is fresh, not stale.
It's interesting that nowadays some people need to be reminded to 'wear their manners' when leaving home. We all have have to share this planet, so having consideration for others is crucial to sanity in our society. As always, I love your channel. 😃
I remember boarding a flight from Brussels to Montreal with my 18month old daughter... The woman next to me could of killed me with her gaze!! When we landed in Montreal, the couple sitting in front were really surprised to have NOT NOTICED a small child sitting right behind them! I just turned around and shot the same look that woman gave me in Brussels!!! LOL!!! Felt so rewarded!!! I totally feel for people traveling with kids. Especially parents alone with kids! Thanks for the video! Hope it helps people to make better choices ;)
I flew on American Airlines from LHR-CLT. This one lady stood up with her two friends and talked really loud in the aisle for around 30 minutes when the seatbelt signs were on. It was really annoying.
I once had a very tight layover. I told the flight attendant about it and they announced it to the others, asking them to let such people off the plane first. That resulted in a smooth disembarkation for all.
This is pretty much everything I encounter on the daily city bus going to and from work :( ugh especially the smelly people and loud talkers. 7am bus every morning with all of this is enough to drive me insane lol
Amanda M at least the free floor show is 1 hour tops on the bus, and you can always bail earlier. I had a guy barf what seemed like a gallon of cheap wine in the aisle way of the bus. In the summer time. 98F heat and no AC on the bus. #goodtimes
Using the seat in front of you to pull yourself out of the seat
Yesssssss!!!!!!!!!!
+Curt Lewis I have had people pull my hair that way! It was not intentional, but when they grabbed the seat at the top, they caught some of my hair along with it.
OMG! YES!!
Well, when you have your seat reclined, they have no choice but to hold onto it.
Not if the person has just a little bit of ab muscle.
Instead, we offer them the choice of aisle or window.
lol that "couple" made me move out to another seat so they could be togheter
@@747-pilot i mean they're cheaper and have better customer support than American, Delta, and United so your loss?
Antonio Kinsey
lol...traveling adults that can't even be bothered to summon some discipline to book their tickets earlier online to secure seats and expect others to help them out..what is this? a charity?

I want my window seat - no matter what.
Women that wear too much perfume or men that wear too much cologne should have to ride in the wheel well!

So much this. Any perfume or scented products are problem because we're all in each other's face & breathing recycled air.
for me its better than sweat. Yuck!
what if your body naturally smells bad and you sweat way too much and have been taking lots of showers/baths?
+QWERTYOP80 I have asked the parents and flight attendants.
+QWERTYOP80 yeah though it's tough
QWERTYOP80 slap the little fuckers
hehe
..and tell the parents interfere and you will get slapped too.
That’s super sweet. Honestly, I have no idea. But I really wish the world would be a little more kind that now. That would make a huge difference. 😔
(Noise canceling headphones have been a big help, too) 😅
being on a plane is like being on the internet you can see the worst side of the ppl lol
+Frodokeuh on the internet you have a choice which sites you visit not true on a plane you don't choose a seat ona plane the ticket assigns you one
When traveling with children, no one else once to hear theirvideo games. Turn the sound way down on the games.
Earbuds, headphones, pods, whatever people prefer to call them. Dollar stores sell them & they have saved my sanity on long car trips with four kids.
I hope the "once" bit was on purpose..
I can relate. I see this all the time in the grocery store.
Time to introduce the kid to Jack Daniels.

+lostmoon77 I agree, but usually it is just the more agressive person who ends up with the armrests.
What a place to be aggressive lol
lisa gaye I flew standby, so I never had a choice of where to sit. Lots of 12 hour middle seats in coach.

I'm old enough to remember etiquette being taught in school, but my parents were also very pro manners.
A corollary to the tip about not being stinky is.....don't wear a lot of perfume/cologne. Besides the fact that many people are allergic to scents, a heavy, overpowering scent is just as annoying as not using deodorant.
+Joan Z I'm not allergic but very sensitive to perfumes and I totally agree with you. Excessive cologne gives me headache.
There we see how different we are: I enjoy perfume smell a lot!

Its sad that most people dont have manners anymore
Or kindness...
Kingkareef most people ? Speak for yourself
Anymore? I've flown for 50 years and there have always been rude people on planes. At least there are no inconsiderate smokers blowing smoke into the "smoke free" section these days.
Yup and the inconsiderate ones i met recently.
@@ianbuchan1793 Kind of a defensive, aren't you?
Kid's don't bother me especially if they are happy. I flew back home from visiting family in Michigan. There was a little boy in front of me. He said he gets scared taking off I told him it is fun and I enjoy the takeoff. He wasn't scared. He told me about his super heroes. His mother felt bad I said he was a pleasure to talk to. He asked a lot of good questions and that is how a child learns. I understand that I was that kid once and would rather make him feel welcome than feel like he is in jail because you add stress to anyone they act differently.
Nathan Wira I live in Portage Michigan!!
Well done sir! Nice Michigan manners, you give us a good name!
As long as they aren't screaming of crying it's fine.
Julie Purpleskater : Then it would be less passengers on each plane, meaning more expensive tickets for all.
Or you could just buy economy plus seats.
Runar Andersen Which isn’t really a that much more accommodating with legroom especially if you’re over 6 feet tall.
That would eliminate a lot of profit, hike up fairs, lose them a lot of passengers.
@@runarandersen878 there's this video on youtube that tells you that coach passengers are not where the money is for plane flights
@@runarandersen878 No, that would mean a cut into their (greedy) profits.
Turn your lights off, people, when you're not using them.
oblivious people :(
You could have asked the flight attendant to turn it off.
That happened to me once I got so annoyed I turned it off for them. Yeah I know it was rude but it was bothering me and they were asleep
Browns Fan what a jerk that guy. I'm sure if someone did that to him he would shout at them too...some people really have no empathy

That's awesome.
I can’t believe how rude someone would be to have a problem with your dog! That is very very rude of them!
That's just sad - it's a working dog, people should let it do its darn job. I'd take a dog as my plane-neighbour any day.
Rather have a dog than uncontrollable kid.
December 2002. 10 hour flight to Israel. My neighbor watched Austin Powers in Goldmember 3 times. I still shudder at the memory.

Oh Mark, so disappointed in you! You forgot the air plane neighbor who absolutely wants to tell you the (whole) story of his/her life.
I actually like that
if its a long flight it helps pass the time
I think Mark would talk to a wall if it spoke to him. Probably didn't even cross his mind lol
Henry Rodgers absolutely. You'd be shocked by the number of people that still don't get it.
Definitely acceptable. Window seat gets to lean, aisle seat gets a bit of extra leg room, middle seat gets an extra armrest. Seems fair to me 🤷♂️
Just do it after take off
Agreed!!
I must try all 13 ways

Sad part is that there is people who just don't care about other passengers or (i don't understand how) don't realize what they are doing.
On a trip from Chile to France I had a man next to me who did not stop moving, singing to what he has listening and literally emulating as if he was playing the drums with his food tray. And in front of him an English dude was seating and he looked behind him a lot of times with a "wtf is wrong with this guy" so many times... I felt his pain.
He did not stop, not once through the 14 hours...
Kappa123 I'd hate that.. but I'm glad he pissed off the stodgey Englishman.. they can be such pompus asses!
+Felicity Ray Self shut the fuck up
There are certain medical conditions that, as hard as it is to believe, do bring with them a lack of self-awareness, and usually politely bringing it to the person's attention that whatever they're doing is actually really annoying to the people around them will get them to stop.
Other Wolters World videos make me want to travel, but this one makes me never want to step into an airplane again!
when a girl with very long hair, sitting in front of me, drapes it over the back of her seat and reclines her seat while I'm eating and her hair is so close to my food. I did ask her kindly not to do that. she was very apologetic and said she didn't realize that happened..so it was all fine but lol I was nervous to approach her in case she wasn't a nice person.
Just start braiding it and saying how nice it smells. Won't have that problem anymore.

Some lady put her sun hat in the overhead bin. She seemed shocked when it got crushed by a bag lol
+Nubianette yeah. It's the nasty nasty smelling ones.
The primary thing is have a shower/bath and clean clothes. Some people swim in cologne/deoderant which can be just as bad.
I do all of this and use a cologne which is light and hasnt been applied immediately before getting onto the plane.
She should have used #Odorono :P
When you mentioned smells, you should have included perfumes and colognes. Floral scents especially annoy my allergies. Expect me to cough, choke, and sneeze from your chosen scent.
Change a diaper at the seat? I guess if someone has two children and can't leave one of them but I really think you should do this in the bathroom. I have seen this more than once and that is why I always travel with antibacterial wipes to clean off the drop table. I have had small children spit up on me before and I can live with it because it was not done on purpose but please really think twice before you change a diaper at the seat, (end of rant).
StanHasselback leave your little fuckers at home
If you see someone pull out a nappy and start getting ready for a change, try chatting to them and offer to watch one of their kids while they take the other to the bathroom to change....changing in the seat is truly one of my pet peeves, I'd rather watch an ankle-biter for ten minutes than deal with that.
@@belindanacht9586 disgusting!
Changing a wet diaper takes 5 seconds and doesn't really smell though. I've done it. Bathrooms are disgusting and have no room. Definitely don't change a poopy diaper in your seat though. Ew.
Is this an American thing? I've never experienced it, but reading all the comments... 🤮
Wtf...
Nicolas Bertin middle guy needs to plan ahead and get a better seat
@@TheAndysim66 But remember, that guy may have been placed there by the airlines, against his wishes.
I usually dont even bother reclining my seat because it makes basically no difference.
reclining is good for long flight where people are sleeping, it's not so bad when the tray tables are up.
Hear hear! Kudos to the wise man.
I enjoy your videos a lot. What I don't like about other passengers is when they forced you to change your seat. Usually I changed it but sometimes they are just super impolite and they will bully you into accepting.
I sympathize with you but IMHO, this is an opportunity for you to learn to stand up for YOUR needs & practice saying "no". Give it a try...
I really find it annoying when someone next to you keeps talking to you while you are not in the mood for talking at all.
+Svartalfgeist and talking... and talking... and talking... and talking
+Svartalfgeist Especially when they are super political, or keep talking about some ignorant thing no one cares about.
Simple. Put on your earbuds or headset. Done.
I think it’s ok to politely say “I’m sorry I have a lot on my mind and am not up for talking, thank you”.
A lot of people are really bad at picking up on social queues, especially if they're autistic.
Great video. What I love is that even when you talk about the negatives, you still do it in a positive way.
Many years after, this is still my favorite Wolters world video
Watching this seven years later, Mark you are so hilarious, the "fat guy'' commentary was fantastic. So looking forward to having beer with you. Cheers Malcolm New Zealand.

Reclining seats is the worst. I've got long legs but people just don't get it and slam it back as far as possible as soon as the seatbelt sign is off.
Same here. I usually knee them every few hours when they're asleep later :D
Hi. I am not very tall, and the leg room is bad for me. How rude that they do that to you!
I have had a seat so far on me that I felt like I was having a mamagram, I'm busty and a seat that reclines that far is painful
Ha ha peter pain thats exactly what i did too !! Kneeing them every once in a while 😂 see how they sleep anymore. They are so inconsiderate.
Snoring and being told by the attendants that you're annoying others is embarrassing.
Getting incredibly drunk before the flight, and being loud and obnoxious through the whole thing as a result.
Maybe you fly on nicer planes than me but the reclining on the seat is only like 2 inches lol
I'm single & don't have kids so I'm not going to have child appropriate entertainment items with me & I shouldn't be expected to entertain your kid because you're too lazy, inconsiderate, uncaring etc. to be bothered to bring things for your kid to do.
all they need nowadays is a bunch of games on tablet..
DRIVES ME CRAZY when people don't even try to let you by/through
Adding to #9: I've been on flights before where the flight was landing late, and people were going to miss their connecting flights if they didn't get off immediately. They let the flight attendants know, the flight attendants double checked their claims and then made an announcement asking everyone to stay seated until those people / groups exited the plane. Some people were still buttholes and try to get off with them, but most people understood and stayed seated.
Naughty children kicking your seat and climbing all the over chairs not being told off
#6: I had a 20-something seated next to me on a flight one time and he took off his old disgusting tennis shoes to rest his stinky bare feet. We're talking a Limburger cheese stinky smell that began to waft through the cabin. I looked over at him and calmly said, "Put your shoes back on." He did.
LOVE it. Good for you. I mean, why do we act like people can read our minds?
Wow. Sounds like you've really had a rough trip. Very gracious of you to make a helpful video instead of just complaining like most folks. God bless.
Bravo!! A round of applause! 👏 Can we please forward this video to the entire world?
I can't help but to have that sinking feeling of, "this is gonna suck," when there's kids nearby, but I don't say anything about it. I just shut up and ignore it, but it does make me mentally tired.
+ThatOneGuy sorry... we try to keep ours "cool" ;)
+ThatOneGuy our kids think the same thing about other kids. ;)
Bravo, bravo, bravo. Thank you so much for finally telling people off. There must be politeness on a plane. I have sat by the best behaved and the worst behaved kids and agreed, help out the Mum or Dad and you help your self. Thank for this video.
I cant get enough of your videos! you are not thin BUT you are not obese either 😊 I love your comments
No offense to Mark but he would be considered obese. I'm at about 270, roughly the same size as Mark and I'm considered obese. One of his cruise videos, he has a photo of him wearing a double x life preserver.
He's definitely obese.
Best thing to do on a plane to piss off people - FART, fart a lot!
Airports are bothersome enough without people doing annoying things
I had someone sitting next to me eat a sandwich he brought on board right before takeoff. When he finished scarfing it down, he took his hands and wiped all the crumbs/debris from his tray directly onto my pants! Absolutely disgusting. How stupid can someone be?
One day my dad and I we're coming home from Paris and all we could think was eww who need some deodorant and to shower. We later found out it was the cheese my dad was bring home for my grandma 😂😂😂😂😂 but it was some good STINKY cheese
+Lauren Shea that's awesome :)
yes they did, everyone farts all the time on planes, they can't help it.
I was farted in a department store and they evacuated it thinking there was a gas leak..I kid you not.....mortifying...anyway 48 hours before I fly I avoid: wheat, dairy, onions and cabbage...at least that way it wont be as offensive to others.
People that let the tray fall, slam it upwards to lock it, and constantly feeling their knees against your bum.
Why the hell do airline passengers think their so damn entitled, even on short flights?
Yea that's what dives me nuts. I'll be on the aisle seat and the people next to me have to get up to pee 4 times in an hour long flight.
andythecoderman I don't know if you're being sarcastic, but that's not being entitled though. Some people just need to pee.
@@taichiperfect if you need to pee that much in one hour, that's a medical condition. Make sure you book an aisle seat so you're not a bother.

How to keep your kids quiet on the plane.... BENADRYL! Period. Give them 1 tablet 30 mins before the flight. They will be sleeping happily for at least a good 6 hrs LOL
Master Joey my son’s pediatrician actually told me to do this lol!
Everyone knows the middle person gets both armrests. the window seat gets a window, the isle person gets easy isle access. The double armrest is compensation for the uncomfortable seat in the middle.
Thank god I was a kid who was shy and would not talk to anyone. I hate those super annoyoing outgoing rambunctious brats.
In all my life of plane travel, I have enjoyed every single ride. I still don't know why people hate travelling by plane, its so much fun.

Nothing like a crying baby during the entire flight from east coast US to London. No sleep was has by anyone. Noise canceling headphones help though.
I once had a very tight layover. I told the flight attendant about it and they announced it to the others, asking them to let such people off the plane first. That resulted in a smooth disembarkation for all.
This video should be made mandatory for all travelers a week before boarding just like the flight safety protocol.
