A live version of the title cut from his 1974 LP, nineteen years later. Ramsey does the music of Earth, Wind & Fire... Can it be any cooler? No, it can't. And 48 years after his first hit, "The In Crowd." (1965) (Notice the dignity of the presentation in the performance of this Funky Masterpiece: Jackets and Ties, all of them.) Addendum, four years later: It has been pointed out to me by some commenters below that this was originally a Ramsey Lewis tune, and EWF covered HIM. My bad.
It's a fact that Maurice White wrote this song. Ramsey Lewis told his audience in Las Vegas the back story on "Sun Goddess," how Reese (Maurice White) called Mr. Lewis in Washington, DC, and they agreed to record together in Chicago. The first song released from the "Sun Goddess" album was "Hot Dawgit," which Earth, Wind & Fire 's musicians recorded with Mr. Lewis. That song didn't do well in airplay or sales but "Sun Goddess" did in fact become the biggest song of Mr. Lewis' career, even bigger than "The In Crowd," which was Mr. Lewis's biggest hit, from 1965. We just lost Ramsey Lewis at age 87 on September 12, 2022. Rest in Peace Eternally Ramsey Lewis. Your music lives forever, and "Sun Goddess" lives forever each time Earth, Wind & Fire perform it live in concert.
Earth, Wind & Fire recorded "Sun Goddess" with Ramsey Lewis on Lewis's album of the same name, "Sun Goddess," in 1974. The album version is the best, over 8 minutes long, with a saxophone solo by the late Don Myrick. The single version was just over 3 minutes long. As most of us know, Earth, Wind & Fire's spectacular live version of "Sun Goddess" is on the "Gratitude" album. Rest in Peace Eternally Ramsey Lewis and Maurice White!
