Every time I watch that Kay video I'm once again baffled that she knew to cook the peas first but neglected to do absolutely anything with the rice prior to putting it in. Bonus points for the cremated garlic.

you dont even need to cook the peas for fried rice, if they are frozen peas. The heat from the rice will heat them through.

I mean, she's British. The most common way to eat peas there is cooked to mush. (Mushy peas (yes, that's the actual name) is a common side for fish and chips.)

The reason the burner looks purple is because it is emitting a lot of infrared light, which modern digital cameras pick up as a bluish color, unless there is an IR filter on the camera. And the reason the coil glows red is because it is so hot that it starts giving off visible light (this is also how incandescent light bulbs work). I'm guessing Kay is filming on a cell phone, hence no IR filter

I will say that she must have done a lot of things right in mothering because her son was so pleasant about doing the taste test on camera and was really nice in his comments about it. They seem like nice people with a great family relationship. I could see someone in a rural area of the UK almost never eating rice, btw. A lot of white people (even here in a very multicultural city - Vancouver) that I've dined with just don't really get the idea of eating rice in some Asian and Peruvian food (they just say they don't really like it, but it goes further than that because the food we were eating needed the rice for balance). Lots of people out there just don't cook rice for themselves.

I think the problem is if you grew up without rice its just tasteless for you, it might be even genetic like soap parsley, its also so anoying to eat, you cant just bite into food like a caveman and a lot of dishes have just plain rice on the side or very little sauce to go with it, its very easy to have unpleasant experience with rice and then you just pick anything else , in my country we have kinda tomato soup with rice and its disgusting and thats probably only rice dish, our asian food are mostly weight takeouts without access to proper asian ingredients so its not top quality also

I think Kay was under the impression that the rice would get cooked in the frying process. Like she just didn't know fried riced required cooked leftover white rice.
How she didn't watch one of the *thousands* of videos showing you how to cook fried rice is beyond me. Like..how does that happen. She's reading some kind of instructions. She says "it says to mix the chicken and the egg". So she's reading some kind of instructions...where is she getting it from? Surely it would tell her to use left over rice? Maybe it did and she figured "fresh" is better? There's so many questions.

I'm guessing whatever recipe she used would specify cooked rice, but she didn't notice the 'cooked' bit. It will also have told her to get the pan up to heat then add the garlic, but she didn't figure that she needed to have chopped the garlic before the pan got up to heat So she spends all that time chopping the garlic while the pan gets way too hot, hence the garlic turning to charcoal.

    • @johncoops6897
      @johncoops6897 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

My very elderly mother STILL does that, but she serves it in the recycled (hand washed) old plastic meat trays that she used to microwave it.
With no sense of timing, she starts "cooking" up to two hours before dinner time, and by the time the trays get onto the table many of the items have be re-cooked 3 or 4 times.
      ....
For example, beans (cut about 1/2" long) look like little shriveled up lawn clippings.
Furthermore, whatever is not eaten stays in the (now melted) meat tray and gets placed back into the fridge, uncovered. A few days later it reappears in another batch, after multiple bouts of reheating. If there is not enough, she adds more on the top then inflicts another few full cooking times on it!
      ...
And celery... she cuts across the entire thing into 1/8" (3mm) slices, starting from the leafy end. At the beginning of the week, it's just the tiny bitter stalks as well as any attached leaves. After a couple of hours of additional microwaving, the stench permeates the entire house! The end result is a tray of the most disgusting dark green objects that are absolutely inedible. Since nobody can eat it, she puts it back in the fridge so it can have the same abuse done to it a few days later 😢
      ...
The only solution is to sneak it off the dining table into a small rubbish bin that I keep under the dining table. I promise you that everything that I have described is 100% true, however I must also assure you that's only a few examples of the crimes that she commits against food.

You're one of those idiots that thinks subs are worth anything, wake up. The 'content' that she makes is borderline dangerous. She is very sweet but that kind of ignorance for basic cooking techniques will get someone very sick or worse someday.

The light is there because that's the heat source. It's just a standard old timey coil stove, they just started putting glass on top for ease of cleaning. It lights up because that's the element heating up. It's not lit all the time, just when it's actually getting to temp.

Slight correction on Frenchie's "Origin of giving the middle finger" - that story is actually about the "V" sign. It's pretty much just the peace sign.
The story is correct, though. For archery you often use your index, middle and ring finger (sometimes only index and middle. Also, tge Mongols, Chinese, Koreans and some other cultures used their thumbs. The former is called the Mediteranean draw and the latter the Thumb draw). The English longbowmen were a bane to a lot of French soldiers. Unless you had fancy pants plate armor - you're gonna get shishkebabed.
The story says the French started cutting off the index and middle finger off of archers to prevent them from shooting again. So the English showed them in a V sign to say "Oi cunt! Come and get them!"
At least, that's the story. No idea of it's true or if the middle finger came from the V.
    This has been archery facts.

This story is apocryphal. The middle finger was used by the Classical Greeks to indicate intercourse, sometimes playfully, sometimes as a threat.

The stove is purple because most cameras pickup Infrared which the human eye cannot see.
It's the same when you point a TV remote onto a cell phone camera. You will see a purple light when you press a key which the eye cannot see.

The middle finger was offensive, as a huge amount of French men, professional soldiers, militia, and knights all alike died to the fusillade of English long bow bolts that would rain down over the many battles between the two countries,
It was a gesture meant to evoke a sense of loss, as these were the fingers that had ended the lives of so many men.
Of course them being cut off from POWs is the myth, I don’t know if widely true, but such myths hold great power in times of war, in rallying people against their enemies. So although the gesture had great precedence without the POW removing of fingers, the idea that such a thing occurred certainly would have perpetuated the gestures power amongst English.

Having watched several of Kay's videos, she seems to always buy low budget stuff or supermarket own brand ingredients or gets the wrong variety ingredient for a dish. From the look of them, I suspect those peas are tinned marrowfat peas that have just been boiled forever. They are a more dry big pea, and often used to turn into mushy peas. The UK export tons of them to Japan to make wasabi peas. I don't hear about that variety elsewhere

Everyone should be teaching their children how to cook from a young age; at the very least the basics! My brother is one year older than myself. Our father, military and medical so when he wasn't deployed he was at the hospital on base; worked long hours. Our mother was a Veterinarian, now retired, also worked long hours. My brother and I had to take care of ourselves most of the time. By the time I was seven and my brother eight, our parents taught how to cook. By the time I was ten I could cook pretty much anything for breakfast. Anything with eggs, pancakes, waffles and biscuits from scratch. All of the fast food style foods - burgers, hotdogs, fries, grilled cheese ect-ect. Three different forms of pasta, chicken & rice, steak, pork chops, various forms of potatos. All at ten!
I'm not saying people need to go full tilt like that but taught right, a child can learn to cook and cook good from a young age. A guy at work who is a single father, I told him about how I grew up and he liked that idea because it would be dinner time by the time he got home himself. He waited till his son was eight and taught him how to cook. By the time his son was twelve, the two of them took turns on who was cooking that night. Turned it into a nice father/son bonding moment.

That anecdote about the Hundred Years war is not about the middle finger, but about the british "reverse peace sign" (which means the same thing).
You don't use a bow and arrow with only your middle finger. And also it was the brits who made great use of archers, French preferred heavy cavalry.
