  • I show you how to stop vine borers, bury stems, use dusts and address other squash and zucchini pests. I also show you how I use Hydrogen Peroxide to stop powdery mildew. Mid season is a great time for a water soluble feeding and a top dressing and I cover how to identify male and female zucchini flowers.

    I am a chemist. The peroxide will release the oxygen atom which will attack the mold& destroy it. It is an aggressive atom & does a good job. It does not turn into water. Your explaination is on target. Good job; I learned a lot.

    Gary, you are always my "go to" guy. You have the best advice, no matter the garden topic.
    I live in hot Arizona. This is my first attempt at growing a patio garden and it evolves as I go.
    I'm allowing this 1st year to be filled with trial & error so my following years will be successful.
    I'm actually surprising myself at how much I've learned and I'm starting to get a little harvest.
    I feel like a proud parent watching my little ones grow up.
    This might sound a little crazy but one thing I did to stop ants from climbing up my squash plants was to rub Vicks Vapo Rub on the stem.
    I wasn't sure what the outcome would be but since it was my first year experimenting, I figured why not.
    It has been a good 5+ weeks since I lubed my plants and it has worked like a charm! Peppers and all!
    Zero stem damage....it's water resistant and the first and only application is still there...and not a single ant in sight. I'm curious if it will keep vine bores at bay as well. I don't have the gardening experience to know anything about them yet or about squash beetles.
    I tried it on one plant first and was so happy with the results, I put the Vicks on the stems of my other squash, cukes and pepper plants.
    They are all doing great!

    Hydrogen peroxide is degraded by light so if you do not use what you have mixed up, you need to store it in dark environment. That is why the bottle you buy is dark. Great tips Gary. Cheers from Canada.

    Gary I think you're explaining the hydrogen peroxide process well for the layperson. It is my understanding that H2O2 causes damage by oxidizing -- stealing electrons, which damages the molecular structures of cell membranes and biological compounds in general. Plants are probably more equipped to deal with this because they get pummeled with UV all day. They may also have catalase too which is an enzyme that decomposes hydrogen peroxide before it can cause them damage. Thanks for doing the work on the actual dosage & practical application! I have learned so much useful info from your channel.

    • @Hayley-sl9lm
      @Hayley-sl9lm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Apparently plants use reactive oxygen species themselves as part of their immune response too, so in addition to harming the fungus you may actually be improving the plant's own immune response by essentially mimicking its mayday signal and providing it a substrate to convert into hydroxyl radicals that are very good at killing. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1218243/pdf/9148737.pdf

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is what I read but they only stated oxidizing and not where the electrons come from. That makes sense. Thanks. This was really helpful. A fun fact is H202 natural forms in the atmosphere. I bet plants adjusted too it. Rains use to have more and I but it helped with these problems. Now a days, the H202 reacts with all the pollution in the atmosphere and a lot less hits the plants.

    This year I covered almost all my squash and zucchini plants with tulle to prevent the SVB moth from laying eggs on the plants, which for the most part has seemed to work, but does restrict the area the plants have to grow in. I almost removed the covers a couple of weeks ago thinking the SVB was done for the season. So glad I did not - in the last week I have found TONS (I counted at least 35 on the cover of one bed!) of eggs attached to the netting which I have had to pick off with duct tape to prevent them from falling into the protected area. The moths seem to have had a second generation this year because recently there are LOTS of eggs and I've seen several moths. I also found some damage on a protected plant so an egg must have gotten thru the tulle! These moths are relentless! When the plants were not covered the eggs were found on leaves, stems, flowers, and fruit - dust was of little to no help!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I might try Tulle next year as prime prevention, just to change it up. The SVB can be relentless.

      What about pollination with them covered? Do you still get a good harvest?

    • @vickikeeney6564
      @vickikeeney6564 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@panterita1177 Unfortunately you have to hand pollinate the plants under the netting but it beats losing the entire plant to SVB! I bought plastic netting (similar to deer netting) with 1/6" holes to keep out the SVB moth last year and it definitely kept the moths out. Smaller moths can get in though so don't plant kale in the same beds :-(. I wish I had bought the smaller hole netting to keep everything out - but it was much more expensive.

    Another great video! I saw your previous video on spraying tomatoes 🍅 with hydrogen peroxide! I had the same leaf spot issue as you. I was very pleased with how the disease was knocked back when I sprayed with peroxide. When I had the first picking of my Bush Blue Lake beans I saw the plants and a lot of the beans were affected with grey rot (I always get it). I sprayed three times in six day (sorry I went strait to your max dose😇) and when I went to do my second pick the results were fantastic! There was hardly any rot at all!
    I was a big fan of Sevin but our provincial government took it off the shelf a few years ago. I thought I would really miss the stuff but I don't. The only insecticide I spray now is BT to control caterpillars 🐛 in a natural way, I feel better eating the food I grow now. I still use insoluble fertilizer though in conjunction with my compost.

      So good to hear the peroxide worked. It is really impressive as long as you keep the dose mix low. Good to know for beans. I have tested 12 tabs on beans, cukes, zukes and tomatoes. I found it damages basil, chard and some grape leaves. Just curious why they took it. Ive been duped by products before. Captain Jacks is good dust too.

    I will tell you all this. Gary is on to it with this Hydrogen Peroxide spray. I had blight showing up on one variety of my tomatoes. The variety effected by blight showed up about a week back on my Patio tomato variety. Gary had already did a video on his experiments with this on tomatoes. So I mixed 12 TBS per gallon and sprayed the Patio tomatoes. It killed the blight and where the black to brown spots had been, now there were small holes in the leaves, but all areas of the leaves that had been green looked just fine. The areas of the leaves that had progressed due to the blight and had yellowed, turned brown. Again the remaining green areas of the leaves looked fine. I did this on Thursday August 9th. In checking these plants today August the 12, they have new vibrant green growth and the leaves that had the blight are a dark green with the exception of where the spots and yellowing were from the blight. So now I know it works and I will be using this as my go to blight and fungus killer from now on. I live in the Deep South of Alabama, with extreme heat and humidity throughout the whole growing season, blight, fungus and mildew are a real problems here. Now I finally have a weapon that effectively takes care of this. SO try it as Gary says, do test sprays on a leaf or two and see for yourself.
    Thanks Again Gary
    Mr. Tom

      Hi there Mr.Tom and Gary
      Thanks for your interesting comments/reporting on your use of Hydrogen Peroxide spray.

    • @DeepSouthBama56
      @DeepSouthBama56 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had mine planted in a small raised bed along my driveway. Its about 12feet long, 16 inches wide, and 8 inches deep. So my thought with the Patio tomatoes was that this bed is real close to the dimensions of a container. Now understand, I have 2 Patio Tomatoes in it, taking up about 16 inches of bed length each. Then a Celebrity tomato taking up 24 inches of the bed. Next are my Burpee Burpless cucumbers taking up 36 inches of bed trained vertically. On each end taking up another 16 inches of bed length are Clemson Spineless okra and on the far end Green thumb okra. So based on bed dimensions and the space I allocated for the Patio tomatoes, is why I chose them for this bed. They have done really well here in the Deep South. I was really late planting this year and did not even get any of this in till after June the 1st. Both plants set fruit during July and into August and we have been in the 90's since the last week of May. I counted the tomatoes on them tonight,one has 15 and the other has 13 on it. Not to shabby for plants only 3 to 4 feet high. In fact two are turning red now and I will probably be picking them tomorrow evening. They are medium sized tomatoes, but they look really nice. So for me and this particular bed, they are working out great.
      Hope this helped you.
      Mr. Tom

      You can start early but I usually recommend trying to start about 2 weeks before disease arrives in your garden. You can only figure that out by writing dates down. You can start as early as you want but please test spray your mixes on several leaves and wait 48 hours for damage before spraying all the leaves.

    Great video! During the last two seasons, I'v had great success against vine-borers by injecting zucchini w/ a Bt solution. Monterey brand is good. The Bonide Thuricide isn't good, because the leaves which were injected turned yellow. That's not surprising, because, Bonide has a green dye and smell like paint thinner. Anyway, I know that injections of a quality Bt solution is very effective against vine-borers. Happy gardening!

    Hi Gary! I love all your informative videos. I’m new to gardening so I’m learning so much. Two questions... 1. Do you have a separate sprayer for each concoction (1 for neem, 1 for peroxide) 2. Where did you get your blue 2gallon watering can?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do actually. I am keeping the peroxide to its own. Neem and soaps and oils, I use a single sprayer. That's two. If I use other antifungals I might use a third. Most likely baking soda, sulfur spray and Hydrogen peroxide will share. I'm just testing H202 100% now and not use other antifungals.

    Peroxide might work great, and I'm sure it does; but, it's not the food grade kind. You are using non-food grade peroxide, which means that there is lead and aluminum in it. Your fruits will absorb these heavy metals into them. You will be loading yourself up on heavy metals from consuming these foods. Might want to use food grade peroxide. It could be a little bit more expensive to use food grade peroxide, but the food grade peroxide is free from loose heavy metals. This is why regular over the counter peroxide is so cheap, because it is full of metals. I see you care about yourself and you do so wonderfully with growing your own foods and you care very much for your garden. So, I just thought you might wanna know about this silent issue.

    In the past couple weeks I have had the vine borer on my zucchini, so this was very helpful!! I had another quick question. I noticed the little yellow type spots on your cucumber plant next to the zucchini plant. I am getting those yellow spots on my cucumbers as well, and was wondering if or what I should do to stop them? The leaves towards the base of my cucumber plant and up inside are recently all browning up and dying as well..? Thank you again, I just love your videos!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So I am actually treating that with hydrogen peroxide too. I started when those spots showed up 5 days ago. What you see left, is the dead spots. The HP worked, no progression but I am still testing it out. Base die off is normal but often it is sucking insects on the undersides of leaves.

    I'm jealous of how gorgeous and healthy your plant is. Lol, I have a giant squash plant and right when it started get tiny inch long yellow squashes on it, it got covered in mold! It keeps trying to make new baby squashes, but once they're about an inch long they shrivel up and die. Is it from the mold? I just found out what that was yesterday so now I'm going to try to treat it. Lol hopefully it works! 😆

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank u Sir. In your opinion how long should I wait to spray the baking soda after a rain. I sprayed the hydrogen peroxide I started out with 8 tablespoons. This is the between day. But it's supposed to rain later today and later in the day tomorrow. Should I start the whole process over after it rains. I know you need 24 hours drying time after you spray the hydrogen peroxide. Then it's gone. I test sprayed but the ones I didn't do look like they could use some hydrogen peroxide. Most of them need a boost of baking soda. But the rain has kind of messed my process up!

    Hello Gary , thank you for the informative video. The bugs , disease and the friggin deer seem to very bad in all regards this season and at times I wonder if its worth it anymore to continue to garden. I have an off topic question in regards to tomatoes , specifically the heirloom variety know as Black Krim which I have of several of these plants growing . Well on the one plant the tomatoes start to ripen then they turn to mush. Being the multi color of the Black Krims its hard to tell if this is blossom end rot or a root issue. Some of the leaves on the plant have a rather wilted appearance but not all. The other Black Krim plants are doing fine. I would so appreciate your input :)))

    Hi Gary, this week I lost 5 squash plants and 2 melon plants. They are planted near eachother.. Plants were established with many winter squash, sugar baby watermelon and golden Jenny melons.. full and beautiful large leaves, lots of flowers etc.. go to bed all is well. Wake up and come out the morning and they are all wilted BADLY and just done. No sign of disease on leaves other than eggs on leaves of squash that I pulled off daily.. my 50+ Cucumber plants nearby are fine, cucamelons, tomatoes and more all completely fine. How do I know if it's borers or something else? The only thing I did was two weeks ago I added some granular fertilizer around plants that was all under 5 in strength and added a little more bone meal.. It didn't burn them, no leaves yellowed and did this to all of them after finding BER on zucchini and tomatoes. Any advice would be great.. I replaced everything that I pulled out with cucumber and magnolia peas for fall just so I have something in that space since it's too late to plant more winter squash in Ontario zone 6b..

    Hi, Ive been enjoying your videos. This is the first year Im having luck with zucchini, bc Ive ALWAYS lost the battle to squashbugs n borers. (I literally gave up for several yrs, and Im back at it). I remember literally dumping 7dust directly on several squash bugs and they kept crawling, it was totally ineffective. A few days ago i sprayed a cpl of the brown marmorated stink bugs with liquid 7 and it didnt kill them either. *What exactly was the other dust u used? Im sure it works on those pesky borers, but then again, and I suppose applying it to a couple outer leaves may kill the moth if it lands on it. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    My tomato plants have a purple hugh on the stems, do u know what/how to rectify that? Thank you. 🙂
    I noticed the bumble bees are all over my hydrangeas but they dont seem to visit my veg garden. Perhaps nxt yr i should bring a couple potted hydrangeas that I am currently propagating nxt to the squash. Seems several types of wasps are the only visitors I get, and Japanese beetles. 😑
    Thanks again.

    Do you know if the organic dust& other is safe around pets? I have cats and dog. Do you dust in am or evening. The peroxide shouldbe safe yes or no?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peroxide is theory would be safer. I have dogs and never had issues with it but they dont really venture into the garden. I dust in the evening and rinse off most in the morning. For squash stems I do leave it on for days. I dont think Captain Jacks Dead Bug dust would effect pets. But I dont know for sure.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Squash bugs aren't really deadly to plants though. Definitely not as much as the moth borer.

    Gary, Hi, Love your videos. Are you pruning your squash leaves so that the center where the blossoms bloom are more visible to pollinators? My squash blossoms are almost completely hidden. Thanks!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not specifically but I prune out leaves for air flow and to let in good insects and so birds can get in to eat insects. Pollinators just need to see one and pretty much find the rest

      I use slug baits that have either iron phosphate or sulfur. They reduced my slug issues by 90%. They are not longer a concern

    How does hydrogen peroxide help with the zucchini?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It helps with any fungal issue on leaves. In short it cleans the leaves but always test spray first and look for damage with new sprays.

    Also question. I have ants in my garden but I believe the type of wood that was used by my fencer to put down a fence is causing ants right around the posts. How do I take care of ants in the garden.

    Wish I would have watched this video last week. Vine borers, squash bugs AND powdery mildew ravaged my zucchini. 👎🏻 It’s too late in the season to start again and there isn’t much left of my plant. It was doing great and two days later almost completely dead. I sprayed it with dead bug brew liquid, neem oil and soap, didn’t do anything.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They tend to come together. You need 60 days of no frost to get another round in. Vine borers have to be stopped by that stuff before the get into vine.

    I might have asked this question, I can’t remember though. If I spray peroxide and water, will it kill or degrade my Spinosad or BT? Spinosad can last up to 4 weeks and the instructions say don’t spray more than six times in a season. I don’t want to waste the spray but do want to be able to use the peroxide solution

    I thought you couldn’t burry the stem of a zucchini. Is that just when it’s young?!8 have a zucchini that’s laying over and I don’t know if I have a vine borer but I have some wilting leaves on one side. The stem has a verticals crack down it from falling over but the stem is nice and hard and doesn’t seem too effected. I also read you can wrap an ace bandage around the stem to protect it from the vine borer idk about that 😂 anywaus thank u so much for your videos they’ve been a life saver for my 200sqft of growing space I’ve got going on this year!
