I used a solid-core door for a standing desk. Got it for $18 in the Menards bargain bin. I chopped it down a bit because it was too long, sanded it, stained it, then polyurethaned the hell out of it. For a fun aesthetic, I put some luxury vinyl plank on top. The added bonus is that the planks are nearly indestructible as a desktop surface. I do need to put some edging on it though--just haven't gotten around to it. I used my cut-off ends for floating shelves for my wife's office. With the solid core inside against the wall, I didn't even need to do any edge trim. :-) It's REALLY heavy though.
Doing the same build right now. Was curious how I was going to anchor the brackets to the door. But you completely skipped that part lol. Ive got extra heavy duty l brackets that'll hold anything but they are only 10" so need a sturdy solution
@@DaverMade so after some thought, I decided I'm going to jam 2 1x4s through the back side and anchor the brackets with those inside and sandwich the outer board between them. Should be rock solid after that. Ran it by a few other carpenters and I think thats the way we'll go. Crazy you just posted this video, was looking for someone who had done something like this and it was always either framed or butcher block. We'll start the door desk revolution! 🤣🤣
Nice. The edge banding and finishing was a great touch. My mom used a hollow door over 2 filing cabinets as a desk. Just raw veneer slab over some ugly green cabinets. I’ll put those recommendations on concealment to good use. 😎🥸🥷🤫
Love the creative approach to make a super functional desk setup that looks great for an affordable price. Good stuff man!
Door desks are great! I put together a door desk using pipe for a friend and his room looks awesome... well it did before he made it messy.

That sounds awesome and a great way to get a nice desk on a budget! I’d love to see how it turned out.
They look impressive without a lot of work to make. Tony

I just screwed 1" self tapping screws into them through the predrilled holes in the brackets. They have been holding pretty well.
