Another décor item that I think is timeless is wood flooring in classic stains (oak, maple, walnut in dark brown up to light blonde stain). On the other hand, the tile that's meant to look like wood flooring, and grey wood flooring, were both trendy flooring, but not timeless.
I would have loved to put real wood flooring in my house but living in a very humid climate makes it very risky to do so, so we had to use the faux wood tile to give it the warm look we wanted
Agree! I grew up with wall to wall carpet. The house I am in now, and it is the first time I have had hardwood floors. I love them. I do want to buy a few area rugs. When I think now about it. Carpet is so nasty and dirty. They are just dust and dirt catchers. And it collects stains easily that you can't just wipe up like hardwood floors. Especially sux when u have kids and pets.
Yep. My childhood home from 1920s had black & white octagon bathroom floor tiles, pedestal sink. Kitchen had FULL apron sink including double-sided drain boards. Living room had built in bookcases. I can go on and on. These are classics for sure. I totally agree with EVERY item you commented on. Always knew subway tile was a long time classic. Go into any unrenovated old mansion and you can bet you'll see subway tile.

Every house that I see in Tennessee, has subway tile, and I love it! Particularly the color tiles. Green with black trim, pink, blue, and a quality wallpaper can tie it all together for a really nice bathroom. Plus, these bathrooms tend to be small, so it’s an affordable solution.
I have some beautiful Persian rugs my mom bought at the Iranian market. I love them. BUT right now I am potty training at puppy and a toddler so they are just roled up in a corner.

Yes, I have to reset them every couple months to ensure they are coming on at dusk, and change the batteries every couple months. But at night if I don’t want to turn on the overheads for a quick trip to the bathroom, etc. they provide a soft flickering glow and enough light to navigate by.

I agree with all if these. I am addicted to your channel. Keep up the good work. It is nice to see a designer who knows that not all design has to be expensive.
What a great video! There must be enough additional timeless choices that you can make that a second video needs to be done. This was so helpful. Thank you.
My home is full of color. I do not do white sheets. My favorites are florals, but they can be hard to find these days. I like to mix them with comforters and duvets in Turkish or otherwise bohemian patterns. Maybe because my grandma had floral sheets when I was growing up. She also sent *everything* out, including her sheets, to be laundered and pressed. I remember them coming back wrapped in blue paper tied with twine. She was old-school New York born in 1910. I picked up a lot about style and how to keep a home from her. She loved good stemware and flatware. She taught me how to properly make a bed and set a table. She had china that had been passed down to her. She had furniture with frieze upholstery . . . all those things left a profound impression on me.
thank you!! I will remember this for my future home. I love oriental rugs, the fact that they come in any color combo makes it so easy to add to any room
A few years ago, I gave away every single colored bedding I owned (can you imagine I had red sheets at one point. Primary colour red. Ewww!) and bought white bedding. My life has been so much easier on that front. I don't worry about mixing and matching and white bedding is so easy to care for. I walk into my bedroom and I'm instantly happy looking at the bedding. I even changed all the house towels to white.
Yes. I am currently evolving from blues, grays, creams to white. It’s hard to find good quality crisp percale 100% cotton sheets without spending $250!!
@@CowboyBike06 I don't know if H&M has percale but you can get their 100% linen sheets for less. I bought a linen king duvet cover for $126.99 I think. Comes with 2 pillowcases. Check out their home section.
Yes! White subway tiles, I’m so excited you agree As my husband is doing my kitchen backsplash with 3x12 white subway tiles 😉 Can’t wait to have my kitchen completed white( misterio) quartz countertops already done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Kiva! I’ve been binge watching all your videos(I fell behind). I have to say I appreciate and love the practical approach you have to design. I feel like in every video you throw in little wisdoms about spending smart.
Thank you! I was sruggling with a kitchen backsplash. I did want the white subway tile...but..keep looking around! And still really ended up wanting the timeless tile! You confirmed it! 🤗❤ my kitchen is original to it 1985 birth. Lol. Putting in quartz countertops this sat! Will look great with white subway tile! Thanks again ❤❤
I hate painting so when I do paint our houses I do bone White Walls with ultra white trim. It goes with every style and I dont have to paint when the trendy color is over with. Also stick with natural hardwood . Like cherry , oak , hickory ECT. That way it's one time and done.
I saw another interior designer say that "blonde" woods were a trend and that you should stick with mid-toned woods like some of the ones you mentioned. As a Scandinavian it is so interesting to me that the lighter woods are perceived as trendy in America, because over here in Scandinavia the "blonde" woods have been around for centuries in interior design, and I would consider cherry to be a temporary trend
I loved this video! And all of these design are truly timeless. I love trends, but I also love to invest in something that will stand the test of time. Also, I noticed that most of these that you mentioned are great for beginners. Like having white bedding, you can definitely experiment the rest of the bed and room. Having white subway tiles, as you said, you can decide any color cabinet. Etc... I want a persian rug now 😓
I am one of those people that hate subway tile however you’re correct about it being timeless. For that reason I ended up with going with Bedrosian Cloe tile but in the square format version vs the rectangular.
This is why I just did my backsplash in white subway tile. Everyone was like why don’t you do grey or this or that, and I know I’m not the type to waste money by redoing something later on just for looks so I went classic. I did get the long subway tile (3x12) to give it something different and more modern, but it’s so subtle that it still looks timeless.
Loving your photo cut-always in this episode. I have a mahogany pencil post bed I’ve had when I started dental school… I’m now retired. My daughter used it in college and in her childhood room. The bed frame is probably over 40 yo. Looks and functions great……So I agree it’s a classic !!
I love watching you for your ideas and takes on styling a home. In pictures you showed, there was a beautiful dining room where the table had a rug that was large given table size. No that’s not my opinion but watched enough designers who would say the rug is to big. My question is that a newer trend? I personally love it but was just wondering your take on rug sizing in a dining room. Thanks!
I love the white subway tile...and love the white grout our no grout..yes...and thank you for the other video regarding a baby vacuum for your granite counter tops...found it on Amazon and bought two of them...priceless...thank you!
I grew uo with Oriental/Persian rugs. When my Grandparents had to sell their business and home to the state to make way for an expressway we were given their three best rugs and they lived another life in our bedrooms. I didn't appreciate them that much then but would love to have them now. Embrace quality and what stands the test of time. I think I'm drawn to things in design as I am in fashion: Classic never goes out of style. That's why it's a classic!
We're having a house built and I've been on the fence about what backsplash to get because there are so many options. The builder gave us an option of granite or quartz countertops and I went with the frost white quartz. I've been going nuts trying to figure out a backsplash because there are so many options. Sometimes we overlook simple because we think it's too easy. Subway tile is now at the top of my list.
KB this was a GREAT video. I’m not a fan of the built in or free standing bookshelves. Most of what I see on YT is over-styling that ends up looking like a packed store display. I pick things I really love and try to keep accessories semi-minimalistic. I enjoy looking at my things more when there is not so much competing for my attention. Too many beautiful things in spaces like bookshelves is esthetically over stimulating....for ME.
Thank you for helping to make me feel like l made some wise design choices! ! I have most of the items on your timeless list, except for the built-in bookcase. (We actually have an Eastlake style bookcase from the late 1800s and l don’t care if it’s timeless or not, we love it)
Sconces are *classic* . And there are some wonderful options out there, especially now that they’re popular again. My living room and bedrooms don’t have overhead lighting, only sconces, as do many homes built before most people had electricity and I prefer it that way. I supplement the light with table and floor lamps.
So funny I just watched a video over at House Of Valentina and she said the complete opposite respectfully about subway tiles. I find it so interesting to hear both sides and why’s. I love this. Keep it coming Kiva. ❤️🔥
LOVEEEEEEE THIS VIDEO!!! You betta (in my country Louisiana voice) tell em Kiva!!!! Y’all everything she said is TRUE!!!! I have nearly all these topics she discussed in my apartment well minus the built in book shelves, but she’s correct about these things and they are TIMELESS!!!! Velvet and vessels are also another timeless things to have in your home!!!
I think you hit the nail on the head with timeless things. I loved your idea to paint or change the color of a 4 poster bed if you feel it looks too much like “grandma’s”. You just gave me an idea…
I was in Philly for 24 years. I still like subway tiles. And I agree. At least there's not rats running all over my kitchen. As opposed to the subway system in Philly. Gotcha. Haha
I tend to buy the old wool Persian rugs that are just beyond repair at some of these rug shops. They can be had nearly nothing. They're still perfectly soft and usable if you don't mind a little fraying here and a threadbare patch there. Nbd. Adds to the patina. Actually sold the last one I had on Craigslist for $100 a couple years after I paid $50.
I love all white bedding...thanks to you!❤ and I love built-ins. Unfortunately I'll be moving into an apartment, so I'll be going with shelves. Maybe a video on bookshelves?? Decor ideas, styles...etc. Love persian/oriental rugs. My style is transitional! I'm looking forward to finally styling my own place! Thanks for all your tips and ideas!
That’s what I like. Classic elements. They never go out of style. They become trendy at least twice a decade, and they are classic not just because they’re old, but because they’re beautiful, practical, hold up well, and are extremely versatile. An oriental rug, for example, can work with pretty much any architectural or decorating style.
Great video! I'm decorating my apartment in Mid Century Modern style, because I love it, and, with it's low furniture, it's perfect for an apartment. My point is that stained wood furniture with clean lines should be added to the list. MCM style may have started decades ago, but it hasnt skipped a decade in it's popularity. Also, my Persian style rug and a couple of storage baskets takes my decor into MCM/Boho, which I love. Your videos are inspiring, and sometimes comforting. Keep it up, please.
Yes it’s true about subway tile. It’s classic. I had it in the late 90’s, it’s still in style. I’ve had five different houses since then and people are still doing it.
I love the second bookshelf you showed for your example...looked like black metal with white shelves. Is that from Target? And I do LOVE my white subway tiles for just the reasons you mentioned....inexpensive, and always in style!
I HATE subway tile. It makes me feel as if the bathroom is brought into the kitchen. I prefer for the same material from the countertop to go all the way up.
Every (EVERY) YT designer who've said subway tiles are out, said something to the effect that, "they're still beautiful and I Iike them, but they're out, because they've been overdone". That's why I don't like "trends". Something is timeless and beautiful, but too many other people like it, so get rid of it?!? My house's decor style is 'me' and I never go out of style😋
Totally agree. I can't imagine shopping with all those other people in my head. I get things that I like whether people universally hate it, love it, or are indifferent to to. If they aren't paying my bills they don't get a vote. Lol.
“It’s okay to have things in your actual room. Life is not a photograph.” That should not be revolutionary, but it is 😂. Love that reminder!

10. bar carts (some people say they are out, but they will never be out to me)
There are so many YT designers sharing their opinions on styles and pieces, but this video really surpasses the opinion and transitions in reality.
I loooove white bedding 😍😍 its so easy to pair throw blankets with. Almost any texture or color will look amazing. Glad I got that one thing right! 😂
Items discussed in the video:
Subway Tile
Persian Rug
Canopy Bed
White Bedding
Built In Bookcase
Everything that I grew up with. My mother was a very talented homemaker. I try, but I cannot match her level of success.
And sconces
Thanks Carla But I do loves listening to KB points 🤩
?
I agree with all if these. I am addicted to your channel. Keep up the good work. It is nice to see a designer who knows that not all design has to be expensive.
Your analogies are always spot on! “ jumping into bed like a it’s a ball pit” Yes! ❤️
"First of all, you're rude. Your grandma has a phenomenal house."
Funniest line ever!
🤣😂🤣😂
Yeeeeessssss!!!!!! Me too!!!!!
I LOVE LOVE my white bedding but there's times 😂 when you need colored sheets!
@@joylastname3035 Thank you, I will! How kind of you.
Yes! White subway tiles, I’m so excited you agree
As my husband is doing my kitchen backsplash with 3x12 white subway tiles 😉
Can’t wait to have my kitchen completed white( misterio) quartz countertops already done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is all TOTALLY my taste. And I had all of them in my last home. ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS WOMAN!
I think REAL hardwood flooring is timeless! Also maybe Wainscoting and crown molding
@@Birtheish I’m in American and I love the blonde woods. Can’t stand the cherry, mid toned oak colors…
@@Birtheish Exactly. Blonde is a classic.
I actually think white walls is a trendy colour. But I agree they go with most everything.
To white and it looks like a 90s rental or a hospital 🤨
I love your personality. I am building a home and would love to have you help me with furniture placement.
Etc... I want a persian rug now 😓
Yes! Each of these design pieces will look amazing with each person’s style!
I am one of those people that hate subway tile however you’re correct about it being timeless. For that reason I ended up with going with Bedrosian Cloe tile but in the square format version vs the rectangular.
I have some money. Look at me go. 😆 love it, KB
Love your show! Grandma does have a fabulous house:)
Thank you!
Girl I love you! ‘Industrial and farmhouse’ never knew why that confused me as well! 😂
You are so intelligent and I love the point of this video . I love Whites. It always feel so luxurious.🔥🔥🔥
I am so happy I found your channel! You are the most knowledgeable and helpful interior designer!!
Thank you so much Goldie! Welcome to my channel! 💕💕💕
Can you do a video on affordable patio furniture?
Thank you for helping to make me feel like l made some wise design choices! ! I have most of the items on your timeless list, except for the built-in bookcase. (We actually have an Eastlake style bookcase from the late 1800s and l don’t care if it’s timeless or not, we love it)
Sconces are *classic* . And there are some wonderful options out there, especially now that they’re popular again. My living room and bedrooms don’t have overhead lighting, only sconces, as do many homes built before most people had electricity and I prefer it that way. I supplement the light with table and floor lamps.
Love this video it is just what I needed. I want things which are classic and timeless!! Thanks Kiva!!
The examples of the wired sconces just rocked my world. Exposed or channeled wiring, made elegant?? Sign me and my 3 year apartment up.
I live in NYC. Subway tile will always feel grimy to me bc it's all over the subway system which is not hygienic. 😳😭
I was in Philly for 24 years. I still like subway tiles. And I agree. At least there's not rats running all over my kitchen. As opposed to the subway system in Philly. Gotcha. Haha
Praying that you get a tv show! HGTV needs you!❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️
I would watch. Thankyou!! Having fun and getting an education.
Happy Monday, true about the subway tiles and the oriental rugs
Happy Monday Stephanie! 💕💕
This was a great video Kiva, I really enjoyed it.
Totally agree with persian rugs. They are art and beauty that never go out of style
I love that I have Oriental rugs, a canopy bed and some white bedding. Off to a good start! Thanks for your insight!
I agree with the subway tile. I recently saw it with a dimensional wave…gorgeous! It’s so classic and looks so clean.
Great job!! I’ve had my 4 poster bed for over 15 yrs.
You always make me laugh “That’s rude. Your grandmother’s home is lovely. Check your attitude!l”🤗🤣
I loved your timeless classy suggestions. It made me happy as I don’t have to waste money unnecessarily. Thank you. 💐
Me and my daughter just love watching your videos, very informative. thanks truly
Loveee a canopy bed
Yes!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
100% on looking back across decades to get to the classics.
I've never agreed 100% with an interior designer before watching this video. You're great!
Yes - so helpful! Why don’t more interior designers make THIS video!!!
Check Lisa Holt , Nick Lewis and Garrett LeChic. They all talk about classics too.
Great video,so much information. Thank you for sharing.Have fun in Maxico 💃🍾🥂
Thank you so much Pooja!! 💕💕
I love subway tile! I like the the clean
simple look of it!
Thank you girl you’re amazing, your information gave me such a relief
Love you 😍💐
I HATE subway tile.
Lol.
This is an excellent idea! We just bought a house and are short on money but want to decorate, thank u so much!
