From my experience with depression all of my life I've noticed that an imbalance of dopamine and serotonin is an issue more than just having low serotonin. I was taking phenylalanine and tyrosine to attempt to increase my dopamine and it started to make me more depressed. I stopped taking those supplements and started taking tryptophan and it really helped me a lot

You have no way to know any of them are low because you cannot measure them. Serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline are all involved in mood but not necessarily a deficiency in any of these .

Key is giving tbe building blocks (vitamins minerals amino acids, the more whole food the better) to any issue, and not hormones or neurotransmitters, end result products, as the body will stop making it. Also carefull of getting too much of some amino acids like Proline. And phenylalanine is made in the breakdown of aspartame!! So avoid that. I have a friend that has PKU and can't process phenylalanine, and after I learned aspartame breaks down into phenylalanine, (Diet Coke has a warning label for PKU), I also learned people with her condition will become depressed if they don't stay on diet, and if left too long, will decline mentally and physically into retardation or mental disability. But I realized they were just canarys for the rest of us. It affects us too, and I agree, too much phenylalanine will cause depression in people without PKU too.

I have one question. You mentioned neuronal breakdown due to stressors. Does this happen when you take on the stress voluntarily? Like when you engage the parasympathetic nervous system instead of the sympathetic nervous system engaging due to stress that was unexpected?

What is the cause of mania? Clearly whatever hormone is involved in mania, the lack of it will cause depression. But building up "serotonin" by taking drugs, where most serotonin is either found in the gut or blood stream, very little will reach the insula itself (where manic-depression stems from). And if someone has damaged receptors in the insula, then even drugs might not help. The other issue is many people associate anxiety and fears with depression--but that is the amygdala system, not the insula system. So increasing serotonin is not going to effect someone suffering from anxiety or PTSD (where hippocampus and memories are interconnected in the amygdala).

    • @DocSnipes
      @DocSnipes  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching the video.
These are the Causes of Mania and Its Relationship to Depression:
      * Biological Factors: Mania can be triggered by alterations in brain structure and neurotransmitter imbalances. For instance, dopamine alterations are common in bipolar disorder, which can affect mood regulation and contribute to both manic and depressive episodes.
      * Genetic Predisposition: There is often a genetic component to bipolar disorder, which includes periods of mania and depression. Individuals with a family history of bipolar disorder are at a higher risk of experiencing mania.
      * Circadian Rhythm Dysregulation:Disruptions in sleep patterns and circadian rhythms can precipitate manic episodes. Similarly, people with depression often have difficulty with sleep, which can further disrupt circadian rhythms and potentially lead to mania.
      * HPA Axis Dysfunction: The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis plays a role in stress response. Dysregulation of the HPA axis can lead to hypercortisolism during manic episodes and hypocortisolism during depressive episodes, affecting mood and behavior.
      * Psychological Stress: High levels of stress and emotional turmoil can trigger episodes of mania and depression. Managing stress through relaxation techniques and therapy can help regulate mood swings.
      * Substance Use: Certain substances, including stimulants and antidepressants, can induce manic episodes. It's important to consider the influence of substances when diagnosing and treating bipolar disorder.
      Relationship Between Mania and Depression:
      * Bipolar Disorder: Mania and depression are two poles of bipolar disorder. Individuals may experience manic episodes, depressive episodes, or a combination of both, often with periods of remission in between.
      * Cognitive and Emotional Aftermath:The aftermath of a manic episode can lead to feelings of depression, guilt, and regret, especially if the individual engaged in risky or harmful behaviors during the episode.
      * Impact on Recovery: For those with co-occurring addiction and bipolar disorder, a manic episode can lead to relapse, which can then trigger intense negative emotions and potentially a depressive episode.
      * Treatment Compliance: The side effects of medications used to stabilize mood, such as fatigue, can affect treatment compliance, which can in turn impact the management of both mania and depression.
Understanding the causes of mania and its relationship to depression is crucial for effective treatment and management of bipolar disorder. It's important to address both manic and depressive symptoms to achieve stability and improve overall functioning.

After spending three days being triggered by the headline created by that meta analysis, I want to thank you for this video cause it helped bring me out of the panic attack that came from being flashed back to the 1980s when I was still a teenager and people still thought that depression was just all in your head and that anyone who had it was just lazy and was using it as an excuse for their moral weakness. People still believe that, but at least now some of us know better.
I’m going to be less kind than you were, Dr. Snipes, because I read the analysis and that trash heap of headline being to describe it is definitely gaslighting.
Most people won't even know what a meta analysis is and won't understand that it’s not new information, it’s just an analysis of studies already published. The first report on SSRIs came out in 1974, and yet the authors of the analysis could only find 17 studies that met the criteria they created. I’m not saying the analysis is flawed (even though people with more expertise then I have had), but I will say that a study conducted by researchers whose ethics declarations include being co owner of a company that “help people safely stop antidepressants in Canada”, and an author who wrote a book with a subheading “Overmedicalisation, Flawed Research, and Conflicts of Interest” would definitely raise red flags if it wasn't published in the journal that it was published in.
There are so many different messages they could have used to better educate the public. People need to be informed of the limitations of medicines and other treatment options, but to suggest taking aways something that helps 30% of people with depression is words that I can't say in polite company.
We’re not in the 1980’s anymore, but sometimes our brains get stuck in those traumas and until you calm the mind you can't heal the mind.
I have strong feelings about this analysis and the way it’s being played out in the public, but I want to say how much I appreciate you taking a balanced approach. It’s easier for people to make informed decisions about treatment options when they have unbiased information.
