  • A compilation of Siskel & Ebert (and others later) reviewing the films of John McTiernan
While this compilation is as comprehensive as I could make it, unfortunately no official video reviews currently exist for:
    Nomads
Die Hard With a Vengeance (I held off on this episode for a while waiting for that one, but still no luck)
    13th Warrior
Primarily for educational purposes, but enjoy however you see fit!

I think that the majority of us agree on these things - Gene was wrong about Predator, Roger was wrong about Die Hard, and they were both wrong about Last Action Hero (Maybe not as much this one); however we see where they are coming from, respect their opinions and love and miss them anyway.

I thought last action hero was fun as a kid catching it on cable but man is it a mess

In 3 years he made Predator, Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October. 2 of the best action movies ever and one of the best naval movies ever. One helluva run

I am obsessed with John Mctiernan films! He helped create 80's cinema and rarely gets credit for it.
21:43 That scene is not in the movie of him running from the dynamite in slow motion.

John McTiernan's contributions to action cinema are as noteworthy as Spielbergs or Camerons. He deserves more recognition.

      - He got bankrupt after release from jail and move out from his Wyoming Ranch to live with grandmothers in somewhere of British Columbia, Canada.
      - He says he tried to direct new movie [Shrapnel], but studio decide to change idea of movie [name is changed to Killing Season (2013) later], so he just leaves because he afraid of bad situation are happen while filming like happen in him before [reference: Rollerball & Basic]
      - He tried to work personal project name Tau Ceti Foxtrot, but COVID are spread first time, so studio decide to reject this project and he tried to find studio are interesting his idea.
      - Recently, He say he still have offer from studio to direct new movie [but he declines because it's same as movie are release before] and latest project he has offer is movie about Three Commando guy have mission to rescue a daughter in Columbia country.

@@slowbladejunglist7361 He's a Terrific Movie Director but not a Bona Fide Filmmaker. Meaning he doesn't write, he just directs. I prefer Filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, John Hughes, Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino. Just to name a few

@@PelvisPresley420 Many name directors you prefer is Great in traditional cinema languages story telling but John McTiernan he interests in different style based on Bernardo Bertolucci / Federico Fellini / Luis Buñuel / John Ford / Stanley Kubrick [he didn't mention about Alfred Hitchcock or Akira Kurosawa as many Director are prefer in general].

@@PelvisPresley420 I think he was a great filmmaker, especially in the 1980s and early 90s, but the word you're probably looking for is "auteur".

I feel like gene didn’t like predator because there was so many other movies like it coming out at the time it kinda waters down that genre. But when looking back at predator it obviously stands out as a great movie

lol I love when Ebert is “wrong” like he is with Die Hard… he needs to admit that the action is great and Willis is really charming and funny, but gets so caught up on the dumb cops… and I don’t even think he’s wrong, they definitely are stupid for the sake of the plot but it’s not something that really bothered me, or most others it seems. But it was his hill to die on!

Gene made up his mind to hate Predator before he entered the theater. Roger hating the cops in Die Hard and ultimately giving it thumbs down was aggravating. He gaves that thumbs up to clunkers like Outland, Cliffhanger, and Die Another Day but not Die Hard?

    • @exiles_dot_tv

I thought Outland was very good but agree it wasn't put together as well as Die Hard. Die Hard is pretty much flawless, I can't imagine changing anything to make it better

Yeah I did not like Basic. Super Boring Movie. Another Travolta Disaster is The General's Daughter. JT is a very good actor with lots of great movies but nobody is immune to Terrible Films
