If anyone is having problems understanding why Ab is used when in C, it's because this lesson is based on borrowing chords from the Phrygian mode. C Phrygian is the 3rd mode of Ab major, so they use C (from the key of C) as a starting point, then use the rest as if we suddenly switched to the key of Ab, playing the rest of the progression with chords that correspond to the harmonized Ab major scale, resolving back to C in the end. So, in the first example, the I IV V vi progression in C would be Cmaj7 Fmaj7 G7 and Amin7. But doing the modal interchange the I IV V vi would now become Cmaj7 Dbmaj7 (the 4th chord, not from C, but from the harmonized Ab major scale) Eb7 (the 5th chord from the harmonized Ab major scale) and finally Fmin7 (the 6th chord from the harmonized Ab major scale). Then it resolves to C. Hope that helps someone.
@@sonnetlabbe Absolutely! Just play around until you find one that sounds great! And, while you are at it, use secondary dominants in there too for a little bit of extra spice.
@@sonnetlabbeC phrygian is inversion of C ionian mode. This is unique modulation at circle of fifts with triangular extension... For exemple C ionian, C phrygian, E ionian, E phrygian back to C ionian.
@@IntrepidFox94 nah it’s like… while wearing headphones it’s offensive on the ears. They mixed it this way so that it would be separate from the bass, I get that, but it’s too much. Otherwise everything sounds great… that piano always sounds amazing.
It's incredible once it clicks! Very practical. Basically, if you know all your roman numerals (I chord, V chord, etc) you just sub everything but the tonic for that same roman numeral in the key of Ab, which is the bVI of C. The tonic's root is still in that key, so even when you're going out, something's in. (....Reading that back, I'm not sure that made any sense lol sorry)
@@anthonywritesfantasy so you mean for example in the key of C you would play the I chord as C, but you would play the ii of Ab instead of the ii of C?
This is the sweetest thing I've heard all year...makes you want to quit everything you are doing just to want to learn how to do just that. How can the world be so cruel with so much beauty within. Bass is fundamentally chill and articulate...
So basically what is happening.. The progression is I-IV-V-vi-I and Adam says everything goes to Ab but the tonic. Means now we will play C and rest of the chords means (4-5-6 chords) in the key of Ab which gives us Db-Eb-Fm and then we land back to C major.. you can use the same concept for the rest of the progressions in this video. And since this is Ab (C becomes Phrygian mode) so now if you want to explore you can change the mode of C to maybe C Dorian and now you are in the key if Bb. You can try the same chord progression and now they will be C - Eb - F - Gm - C. This is wildly subtle yet the concept just went under my radar.. one of the most beautiful lessons.. Thank you Adam and Open studio ❤
for some reason never worked on modal interchange like that. its so much simpler than how i was trying to create exercises for it. huge help brother, thanks!
At 0:23 and 0:33, and again at 0:40 and 0:50, the "vi" is mislabeled as a "iv", which makes it harder for intermediates to unravel. Love the video apart from that, though.
I don't know why TH-cam only introduced me to your videos in the last week, but this is the dopest shiz I've heard for a long time. I'm glad to know that sometimes the algo can do me a solid. The key of Ab major has the same notes in it as C phrygian. So if you want to play in C phrygian you basically play in Ab major but you end it on C major chord (C minor in "true" phrygian)
By the way, you CAN do this with other scales; he has shown this with E-flat major going to C as well. (That's borrowing from the Aeolian rather than the Phrygian as in this video)
Ahhhh, it's so beautiful. Can you imagine how rich my horn playing is becoming using this education? Good, baby..... so good. Prayers and props to the one and only David Sanborn. ❤
That chord melody you play over the top of Bm7 in the second example is just fuckin killer. So is the updated bass for the substituted chord progression each time

It is not fair how much cooler this sounds on piano than guitar.
How you voice the chords is a major role in it
As someone who is currently translating to this guitar I agree
Try diff voicings. Sounds great on guitar
as a guitarist there are just some things that deserve to be played on piano, like moonlight sonata
It's much easier to make chords like these sound good on guitar if there are two guitars.
This is so enjoyable to listen to that I've just had it on repeat for an hour now
Essentially the idea of the lesson was to play in the key of A flat but return to C major as the tonic instead of landing on A flat.
