I used the random garden leftovers to make homemade V-8 this year. I literally threw in everything but the kitchen sink: celery, tomato juice, onions, spinach, parsley, carrots, garlic, and beets. I simmered for 4 hours and then stained all the veggies from the liquid to separate. I ended up with 2.5 gallons of the homemade V-8 and 2 gallons of cooked veggie debris that will become the basis of homemade vegetable beef stew. No waste!
We don’t put almond milk in with our smoothie mix. We mix everything together, blend it, put it on the trays, freeze dry it, store it and then when we want a smoothie, we take some powder add water and ice, blend and enjoy
A freeze dryer is one of the things we want to add to the homestead when we get our garden producing more. Any cross-contamination of taste during the process?
As someone who has been freeze drying a few years; I have to say it drives me up the wall to see so many different items in one batch. I would not do a smoothie with onions on a tray in the same batch. That’s just my preference
You do know, just because the machine said it’s finished. Doesn’t mean everything is fully dry. I hope you are weighing the trays. That will tell you if it fully dry. P.S. it’s it’s still cold that means there’s ice crystals in your food. It should never be cold. It should be warm. Be careful, you’re going to run into problems later when you go to open your food. I do my own MRE’s and more. No matter what I’m freeze drying, I run the unit for 35-40 hours and weigh the trays to make sure it’s completely dry.
The problem I have is that there's no consistency of the videos or even a timeline. Everything seems to jump all over the place. What this really comes down to is the intro and outro of each video. There's nothing connecting one video to another which makes it hard to watch
Thank you for the feedback. I am curious as to how you subscribed. What video led you here? There is no consistency because this is a homesteading channel. There are many things to learn and do every day. The channel has never been about one sub-topic. The connection is homesteading and the various jobs that come with it.
Looking great and a fantastic smoothie idea...love Harvy- our Freeze Dryer! It is a super blessing!
Blessings ❤

Cool.
Yes, a little hint of cross contamination from the onion but nothing else.
Hey. I saw the food go in the freezer and cone out the freeze dryer. What did I miss? Like a whole step
You have to freeze it before freeze drying it. Check out our playlist on food preservation. We have a ton more vids on freeze drying

Um, ok. To each their own.

Why you put the potatoes and the onions in the freezer first?🤔 has to be always that way?
If you freeze the food first, it takes much less time for the freeze dryer to complete a cycle. It is more efficient.
