Hi Dave, I'm not from America and I'm not sure if I'll ever get the chance to meet you so this is probably the only way that I can convey my thoughts to you. I came across your channel recently and I have been hooked. the first thing that caught my eye was how clean your shop is. This is very inspiring. Next up was your attention to detail. I have, in these few months learnt so much more just by watching your videos.
I'm a teacher and I taught your 4C's approach to my students. They've watched your videos and it has motivated them to strive for excellence. Thank you for taking the time to produce these videos. You come across as a very sincere and passionate man. I wish you and your team all the best in everything that you do. My students and I have subscribed to the channel as our gesture of support. God bless you and your team

Been wrenching on cars/trucks for about 30 years and it's probably been 3-4years since I've resurfaced a rotor. We ONLY did it that time because the veh owner was a good of the shop owner and a cheap ass, PLUS was made to sign a waiver agreement. On the other hand, a shop owner that runs a VERY piece of crap business i worked for (unfortunately) absolutely refuses to buy new rotors unless the old ones are BELOW DISCARD thickness and you'd get written up for recommending new rotors otherwise.

Here in rust prone areas, I've found that sandblasting the caliper bracket is the best. Pads slide smooth with 100% of the scale removed where the hardware goes. So easy to do and great results fast.

I run a brake shop that my dad started 40 years ago we have 8 bays and 8 employees we haven’t turned a rotor in 20 years. Before you would have to wait a few days before you could get a rotor but with it so readily available and plus it takes twice as long to turn a rotor then it does to have a new one waiting by the time the car is torn down and put it back on instead of waiting 30 minutes to a hour turning a crap rotor.

I would say that at least 80% of the time I can turn a rotor, and still have enough left over for the next guy to at least have a think about turning them again. Unless something is wrong with the brake system like a frozen slider, or caliper, and the surface is all delaminated looking.

About a decade ago i was driving behind me brother and he ran a red light. I waited at the light and then met him on the side of the road like a quarter mile down the road. He told me his brakes failed. Research showed that his once turned rotor wore his pads down in months and flung his pads out of the caliper because the rotor was too thin and pads wore quicker then expected. It had only happen to one wheel but he had to replace all four rotors, pads and both of the front caliper😂s. Trying to save a buck cost him twice as much cause a proper brake job would have lasted quite a long time in conparison.
I think turning a rotor make sense for a engineer type that actually pays attention to their car and can see if something goes wrong.

Hey Dave, i'm not going to tell u that u missed something but for everyone else... Keep in mind the labor time that u have involved in turning the old rotors, u may get lucking and clean them up in one pass and stay in specs but most likely not.. Turning rotors is not a quick job, u may get 1/2 and hour or better in each rotor, depending on how bad it is. With the price of new rotors these days u may come close in labor time money turning old rotors then just replacing them in the first place, everything else the Dave says is true. And if u are trying to do on the car turning, forget it, setting that machine up is worse yet in labor time...

Kevlar or Organics are great to match the face of old rotors. I had rotors last 150,000k's+ and over 12 years which 1 set of refacing and changing pads every 3 years or so. That's on a Holden Commodore. They were no name rotors as well but did seem thicker when I got em. I never ever had warpage issues either with em. I think brake pads have come a long way now.

I agree with what Dave is saying about the rear brakes on heavy vehicles👍🏻 I’m owner and lead tech at my shop and I work on light Asian vehicles I tell my customers for the rear brakes you can reuse the rotors as long as you don’t grind the rear. Honda accords don’t get deep lips on the edges that’s for sure!! I always recommend pads and rotors up front though they do 70% and the back only does 30%

  • @runningvalver

When you go four sets of pads on a disc, the disc will be so thin that the pad will actually fly out the space of the carrier and then the piston will extend and the brake fluid will be gone.

It’s called a break in period. Even a brand new pad doesn’t make perfect contact. And when you use after market rotors like the ones in the video that aren’t zinc coated you risk damaging the pad surface. Secondly new pads and rotors have horrible stopping before the pads breaks in. That’s why a test drive is important before giving it to the customer. Most manufactures allow for pad replacement without resurfacing and or replacing the rotors. However I agree that replacing everything new is best. We tend to work on alot of fleet vehicle and cost is an issue. Great video truly admire what you are doing for the industry. Class act

Back in the day, we used to turn rotors all the time because replacing them was just too damn expensive. And you could get 1 or 2 turns out of them before you hit the minimum. These days, things have certainly changed. I just picked up a pair from Detroit Axle for like $50. And you are totally spot on about flushing the brake fluid. When I was running track events I did it every spring. One season I decided to skip it... and ended up having to take her down the escape road after a few hot laps. lesson learned

I agree with a lot that you say but cant agree with you here. There is a lot of times where you can turn a rotor and still have a professional in spec repair that is not even close to discard measurement.. Lots of things play a role on when and where not to do it. For example driving habits, environment, use of vehicle, and many more. We use a pro cut machine that is an on car lathe. It barely takes off anything if the rotor does not have a lip, warpage, or rust build up. I have proven that a lot of times by measuring before and after. No since in charging a customer 400$ for a rotor when it would cost 40$ to resurface both, which is what we charge.

Thank you for this video. True lifelong experience. Here in California, during early 2000 BAR was cracking down on brake rotor measurement and resurfacing. If the rotor had enough material for resurfacing, recommend resurface. Hopefully they changed that law by now. Brake rotor resurface should be illegal for safety purposes.

One thing i would add about the callipper holders and the stainless gliding inserts that the pads sit in.. as you said a thin layer.. espesially on those stainless ones.. but the real importaint is to have a komplete layer on the holder itselves that is the one that rusts.. and espesially here in Norway(plenty salt) this rutst fast, and expanding rust presses the stainless holder into the pads making a hanging brake,Exess heat, wear and consumption
