    I’m vegan but I don’t look at it as restrictive. I focus on the huge variety I can eat and I love trying new things! When you’re thinking of the animals and the planet instead of just yourself, it’s not restrictive. 😊 I hope everyone has an awesome weekend! 🥰

      Agreed! I watched Forks Over Knives in December, 2014, and took a 30 day vegan challenge in January 2015. I never looked back! Vegans have a lower incidence of cancer and heart disease (and some other diseases). I’m kidney transplant and the leading causes of death amongst transplant recipients are cancer and heart disease, so it was a no brainer for me. I had my transplant in 2006 and was hospitalized over 3 dozen times between my transplant and becoming vegan, plus many, many ER visits. Since 2015, I’ve spent one night in the hospital since then, and have visited the ER a handful of times. I was anemic since the 5th grade-since becoming vegan, my hemoglobin is normal. I became Whole Food Plant Based a few years ago. My kidney function is at an all time high. For the first time since high school, I easily fall asleep and stay asleep! Before I got sick, I taught deep water running and was a beast! At 60, I’m as close to my pre illness fitness levels, and far less important, at 60, I’m 7 lbs above my high school weight and in a size 2. Food is much more tasty since I started eating this way. I’ve had several checkups this month with various specialists, and they all said to keep up whatever I’m doing!
      Re:animal cruelty, I grew up on a cattle ranch, and thought nothing of eating meat. Now, it totally repulses me, and after watching videos highlighting the cruelty in the meat and dairy industries, I would never consume meat and dairy products. When my meat eating friends post about how much they love animals, I cringe! 🤦🏻‍♀️
      I NEVER feel deprived. When I began to view food as fuel, as opposed to a treat, everything changed for me. When people ask if I “can” eat something, I say that I can, but I choose not to! ☮️

      @@amybrown6540 That's awesome! I'm sincerely happy for you! I'm currently 6 years passed my life expectancy after having a heart attack and being diagnosed with congestive heart failure, had high blood pressure, & was pre-diabetic, & had clinical depression. Now I'm off ALL the meds, lost 50 lbs & literally feel 20 years younger. All thanks to my 15 yr old daughter asking if she could try going vegan & me doing it in support of her! Vegan for the animals! Vegan for life!💚

    just wanna add that most vegans are doing it for ethical reasons, hoping to reduce the amount of suffering caused to animals as best as we can. so for us it’s not a “restrictive” diet, but one that actually fulfills you mentally and physically 😊 and i think those of us who are doing it for ethical reasons eat similar to this LOL i love my pizza and burgers just as much as my oatmeal and smoothies.

      Yes exactly! I’m vegan and I don’t feel like I’m restricting myself at all since I simply don’t see animals or their secretions as food. For me it would like calling a person on a standard western diet restrictive because they’re “restricting themselves” from eating dog and cat meat.

Honestly so appreciative of seeing people enjoying the nutritional/ medicinal potentiality of plants (esp. ashwaganda/ valerian etc.), like I honestly think there is a lot of joy in learning about this stuff, and the cultures and histories they are tied to but that doesn't have to mean behaving like processed foods are the greatest earthly toxin. Honest question: when saying GF foods are often less healthy than gluten-containing alternatives, one reason you cite is that they are “more refined”. But you also frequently mention that processed foods aren’t bad, that the idea of “unnatural” food doesn’t exist, etc. Can you provide some research backed guidance on which processed foods are harmless and which are not? I struggle with this myself and feel like I’m getting conflicting messages.

    • @May-wm3vc
      @May-wm3vc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It's not the processing itself, she says that it usually has less fiber and more sugar which is why it's less preferred. Generally if your diet is mostly based on whole foods then moderate consumption of processed foods shouldn't worry you. I think the only reason Abbey is mentioning this difference is that gluten free is often "health washed" in wellness culture.

    • @esikazemese

    • @cmartinez20261
      @cmartinez20261 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      As a person who cannot eat gluten I can support this comment. Most of the GF foods need more additives or ingredients to make it taste similar to the gluten version of them. Of course it is all a matter of which product, there are very clean gluten free products, but by using more corn flour, soy flour etc they tend to have less fiber and protein than the gluten alternatives. There are of course very good gluten free alternatives with almond flour or GF oat flour that are better than a gluten option but it is very dependent on each case.

    • @stefaniej.264
      @stefaniej.264 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thatsalt1560 No, actually I don't struggle with my iron levels. It was prescribed to me around 3 years ago and as far as I can remember it was to reduce oxidative stress in my cells. But to prevent anemia I just always try to wait for 1-2 hours after a meal before I consume any caffeine to make sure it doesn't affect nutrient absorption too much (besides following a balanced diet) :) But of course you're right iron supplements often come with Vitamin C because it makes it easier for the body to absorb.

    I’m born and raised in SF and live in LA now and have to say, LA has way better food (especially Mexican) than SF by a mile. Bay Area Mexican food is barely edible to me after living in Mexico and SoCal. It also has WAY more affordable options than SF does. I think the overpriced and uninspired food options you’re talking about in LA exist mostly in tourist and transplant spaces because a city this diverse has a ton of low priced and authentic food from a variety of cuisines. Also as a San Franciscan, definitely never call it “San Fran” again if you want to be welcomed back. Kidding…sort of. But great video as always!

    I developed an eating disorder from how restrictive and stressful Veganism was for me personally, so while it may be broad and fulfilling for many, it isn't always the case. It's going to completely depend on your income, tastebuds, etc. I took every piece of advice I was given, learnt to cook a wide variety of cuisines, increased my knowledge on nutrition, and still everything was "ok" at best and bland for the most part. I had to accept that it wasn't for me, that I wasn't bad for finally quitting, and that yes, when everything you eat taste like cardboard it's completely natural to want change (and okay). Other Vegans ridiculed me for something I couldn't change, and that's why I let it go on for so long, until I was starving myself but not changing because that made me bad, or not trying hard enough.
    I think it's important to discuss these things so that anyone who is interested gets a bigger picture. I'm now vegetarian, recovering and going strong, and actually enjoying food. I plan to make more plant-based meals.
    It can be the best thing in the world or the worst. Everyone should do the best for them and their circumstances. But we also shouldn't villainise veganism; because its scientifically proven to be one of the healthiest diets and does help the animals and environment. A good fake meat can be a lifesaver and nothing to be afraid of ✌ meat has been proven to have many nasty side effects in comparison, so I know which I would prefer. Key is moderation. Just my two centres cents. I don't know much about the guy, so can't comment much on that. But do see lots of stereotypical judgements in the comments the moment "vegan" is mentioned.
    This has nothing to do with what Abbey has said here, more what I've seen from commentors.

When it was rlly bad, here's what I ate for a day: a smoothie, a piece of toast with a slice of roast beef, a granola bar, a small serving on what was served for dinner, and a small evening snack. Now I eat 1/4 cup oatmeal with some strawberries, (or a protein shake), a half sandwich or small proportions of leftovers, some choco.ate covered almonds, a single proportion of dinner, and some icecream. I was wondering if I'm doing better, and if there's any suggestions for me. (I was 4'7 and 104 pounds, lost 23 and regained 5 1/2, and is now 4'8)

    I'm definitely not an expert on CBD or CGB, but I know what they are, isn't it kind of... Counterproductive to mix them with coffee of all drinks? Caffeine and something that's seemingly trying to do the exact opposite?

    Enjoy Chicago as a food city (no longer live there), esp for ethnic restaurants. You can get just about any sort of cuisine possible.

    I think LA is one of the best food cities because of the variety of food! LA is a huge city super sprawling outside of Hollywood or any overpriced section within LA the food is affordable and is ethnically diverse. I live in CA though so I may be biased 🤷🏾‍♀️

      I couldn’t agree more. You can get food from so many different cultures. It so delicious. Read some Jonathan gold writings for proof. I might agree if you stick to the bougie expensive restaurants but try Mexican, Vietnamese, Chinese and Ethiopian cuisines just to name of few of the ones that are so deliciously represented in LA
