I never expected it to be as deep as it was though.

Strictly speaking, Kishimoto is a great painter, but most of the storylines were based on one of his writers. Therefore, after that writer left, the quality of the storylines plummeted, which resulted in the poor plot quality in the latter part of "Naruto," "Boruto," and Kishimoto's other works.

I mean he still missed itachi’s entire situation 😭 he thinks itachi mainly did it for sasuke instead of the village and I don’t think he understood that itachi was in an impossible position, i don’t think he understands that the uchiha were tryna overthrow the government due to the discrimination but during that battle for control for the village, other villages would try exploiting konohas weakness and try to invade causing a bigger war, itachi being a pacifist from seeing war since childhood wanted that to never happen. Itachi couldn’t kill his brother but that doesn’t mean he killed everyone for him 💀 but I think from his reactions he didn’t get it.

At first it's a lot to grasp when we've been told for 400 episodes that Itachi was a bad guy. Also, Tobi's story is very vague to deconstruct all that background he had on Itachi

The way Naruto and Sasuke both grow and change from their respective losses here, is nothing short of incredible. After all these years, I still consider this the best shonen series ever made.

“Itachi’s lover” that Tobi mentions refers to a girl that loved Itachi (and was Itachi’s only friend besides Shisui) in a light novel that specifically focuses on Itachi called Itachi Shinden.
Some fun bits of foreshadowing and recontext you may like:
-In the bell test, when Sasuke tells Sakura his motivations, he mutters, “that time..crying” cryptically, referring to when he saw Itachi cry the night of the massacre.
-In the second databook before Itachi’s debut in the manga, it states that no one but Konoha’s higher ups knew the truth about the massacre, and Itachi strangely had 0 A rank missions but 1 S rank, showing how he skipped straight to the massacre.
-Kakashi states Itachi could’ve easily killed him but Itachi spared him. Itachi had Kisame not only avoided fighting with Gai, Kurenai and Asuma any more than he needed to but also says that both he and Kisame would not stand a chance against Jiraiya and thus avoided a fight with Jiraiya too, even though Itachi was more than enough to fight Jiraiya. Itachi had spared Sasuke again too, and egged him on.
-Itachi basically admits to Sasuke in his flashback during Sasuke Retrieval arc that he will one day be a barrier to Sasuke and Sasuke may hate him someday but that he will always look out for him.
-Itachi telling Sasuke to kill his best friend was so that Sasuke would NOT do it, as Sasuke would not do something he believed Itachi would do (which Sasuke in fact stated at the end of Sasuke Retrieval). If it wasn’t for that, Sasuke may have discovered the secret to the Mangekyo on his own and kill Naruto for it in his pursuit of power just as Itachi anticipated Sasuke would go after the leaf someday if he meets Tobi.

Growing up with this anime was wild. Witnessing the perspective swap on Itachi in real-time was something else. YEARS of waiting for that payoff.
This is actually right, for me it took me awhile to believe, I was like, there’s no way. They’re just probably want to get Sasuke on their side. It was until the Great Ninja War I started to believe it.
In the manga, he put his lover, Izumi, in an 80 year long tsukuyomi where they lived a life married and happy. She woke up since it was just a few seconds in reality, died in his arms and just said "thank you." It's so dumb that the anime wouldn't have included this because this alone shows us so much more about Itachi. He couldn't kill her either, so he did this.

itachi goes from one of the coolest designed villains, to one of the best heros in a single episode, a plot twist spanning the entire series that actually works REALLY well.
and itachi's not done yet, he's beyond dead, but you will understand later in the series. he planted something BIG.
also in case theirs any doubt, madara was being 100% serious to sasuke. itachi really was doing all of that.
Like it or not, the fact is that Naruto is one of the anime that is hard to forget because of the many beautiful memories it provides. Every connected character, touching drama, deep characterization, thrilling action, and surprising plot twists all make Naruto special.
In our country, Indonesia, many even refer to it as "Konoha." Naruto has become the number one anime because it is so iconic; many people refer to all anime as "Naruto" because of its significant influence. Naruto has even been used in a political context due to its widespread impact.

Even if there are some signs of a retcon, Itachi has probably one of the best written and most heartbreaking backstories in Naruto.

An extra detail about Itachi - when he killed his lover, he used his Tsukiyomi to put her in a genjutsu and let them live out their entire lives together, married, kids, until she she dies of old age in the dream world. All because he loved her and wanted to give her the life he knew she deserved, before he killed her. Man was a real one.
I actually forgot how episodes 120 to the end of pain arc were just magnificent writing non-stop.. Naruto was awesome man.. For me the best in the big 3 easy & my top 2
I love how Kishimoto exposes the pitfalls of the unreliable narrator. By this point in the show, we've had 3 different accounts of what happened between the Uchiha and the Senju plus the 9-tails incident. Our perception of history is shaped by who we hear it from.

I mean, Itachi's intentions were for Sasuke to go back to the village. But Madara twisted the story so that he wouldn't. BTW, Hebi means Snake, Taka means Hawk.
Yeah like itachi wanted sasuke to restore the uchiha's reputation by going back to the village AS THE HERO who killed the rougue ninja itachi uchiha. He litteraly made sasuke strong and set him up to be a protector but just like itachi loved sasuke more than the village, sasuke now loves itachi more than the village and sees it as the villain who hurt his kind older brother.
And just like that he is back to being an avenger, sasuke thought he found a new family in the hidden leaf, team 7, but now after madara's reveal its like his new family killed his old family, so its just like when itachi killed the uchiha's but with inverted roles.
And it all flies back to the cycle of hatred...
Naruto, what a masterpiece
Honestly the genius part is that he didn’t actually twist it and didn’t need to. Aside from the detail about the 9 Tails attack, it was all exactly as Madara stated. That’s what makes it so messed up and that’s why it also adds to Sasuke’s character because he knows what his brother wanted to do for him, but he doesn’t see any reason to pursue the same path or have Itachi make that decision for him.
tbf, Madara didnt have to do much, the fact alone that the leaf wanted the Uchiha clan eliminated was enough to get him raging, regardless of WHY.
Yes he set it all up for his return even with the insurance policy of implanting Amaterasu in Sasuke's eye. But Madara probably used Izanagi to get out of it because even Kamui would have not erased Amaterasu

I love-love-love Naruto and especially the Sasuke-Itachi conflict above all reasons, and I truly find this was a masterpiece arc!!!
Still: Itachi is no hero. If you look at this quote where Itachi got the mission to wipe out the Uchiha clan, Hiruzen or Danzou tells him to kill them all, and I quote: "...including the unknowning children."
There's an amazing artwork online where you see Itachi dragging a child out of a closet that the boy was hiding in, while the rest of the house is already heavily damaged.
Itachi killed unknowing children, people that didn't have anything to do with the Uchiha rebellion/coup d'etat. This is no hero. It was a solution, yes. But not a heroic one.
If you think about it, Naruto would have never agreed to solve it like this. Of course, "Sailor Moon ideals" are often not realistic, which Naruto often has. But Naruto WOULD have found a different solution, or not have given in to this desperate slaughtering-solution.
Please think outside of the box that is your and our fanboy/fangirl hype for this manga/story.

Poor Sasuke, from believing his big brother was the best dude ever, then to hating his brother for wiping out their family, and then finding out *why* his brother did it and what his brother was going through, *after* killing him. That'd mess anyone up something fierce
My only regret is that I was too young to understand anything when I first watched.
"I thought he was gonna say, we are gonna save it", I seriously don't understand people expecting this. The leaf killed ordered the murder of his entire clan, made his brother do it, made him think his brother was responsible and people expect Sasuke to go back and "save the village".

Honestly when I was young I've always been complaining about this saying why is he wants to do that and destroying what itachi sacrificed his life for and hated sasuke at that time. Sasuke has only known hate and vengeance since his clan died. All Tobi had to do was tell him why it happened. That the Hidden Leaf elders forced Itachi into doing it. Sasuke doesn't know how to live without hate and vengeance so the easiest way to move forward it to find a new target for that and Tobi gave him that direction. Just like you said, Itachi didn't want Tobi to talk to him and give him that new direction.
