- On tour in Japan in 2003, Nicolas Nguyen's interpretation of this famous baroc dance solo, closes the performance of the Ana Yepes Company.
Les Danses du Roi (King's dances): baroc dance concert featuring choreography from the court of King Louis the 14th.
Company Ana Yepes dancers: Ana Yepes, Begona del Valle, George Kergal, Nicolas Enguyen.
Music: Entrée d'Apollon by Jean-Babtiste Lully performed by the Richard Boothby Ensemble -
Master Nguyen makes all the other performers of this number on TH-cam look amateurish. An absolute GEM of a film. Thank you so much for sharing!
Siglo XVI
Stunning. As a professional dancer who trained in advanced ballet, this choreo isn't easy at all. Fantastic job, the control he had is next level
Yes it's a very difficult ballet, so much that a professional ballet dancer has to retrain his movements in order to dance this properly. It's the ancester of "modern ballet" as we know it. I've seen a whole vidéo talking about it in detail. Pro have to train months, before getting it right.
Well, now I have proof of what I have read about the young Louis XIV. He was a superb dancer and so is Nichola Nguyen. Bravo for the king and bravo for this dancer!
Absolutely gorgeous, and incredibly elegant! I’m glad that somebody, at some time, decided to research French baroque dance and to put together training and performance practice so that we can catch many glimpses of the origins of ballet. The footwork of this dancer is so beautiful, and his costume very evocative.
Quelle grâce! Quelle beauté! Puissance, lumière et majesté
This footage is beyond description , and full of admiration , acclaim and deep emotion
I'm just intoxicated with this specutacular footage in Japan

Every movement utter perfection.
In Lully, the unique combination of stylized powerfull "masculinity" with "effeminate" elegance always strucks me. Bravo!
I thought I was the only one watching this beautiful video recently.
Certainly not. I've looked at it several times : - ) There are more good Lully stage video's. Atys (Christie) e.g.
Or Gilles Poirier th-cam.com/video/lJVDgSaEiyg/w-d-xo.html But Nguyen's version is my favorite. Thanks for answering back!
Indeed! I didn't know this one. Thanks. I understand this performance is (was) available on CD: catalog.princeton.edu/catalog/5526075
Exactly!
Imagine dancing this in the palace of Versailles! Amazing!
Utterly beautiful.
It's very interesting to see the serious athleticness of today's ballet in conjunction with this old form. I agree - I haven't seen that much L XIV ballet, but this is superlative.
Ciertamente, fantástico
when I want to travel back in time and watch the King dance I come here!
Beautiful footwork by Nicolas Enguyen. Thanks for posting.
Thank you this great upload. like watching Louis himself, merci beaucoup!
Wonderful! So elegant and measured and a brilliant exponent of this type of dance. A joy to watch.
such class and elegance!
I love it. very elegant. It gives a good insight of that period. It is unbelievable that the king danced ballet - fascinating and inspirational!
dblueroom well in those days you became king because you were meant to become one from birth, but I think many of them would have rather done something else...take Marie Antoinette for example, what she really cared about was the theatre while her husband love to be a blacksmith in his free time. Perhaps if only they followed their heart instead of the role imposed to them they wouldn't have caused so much trouble!
@LaCarusiella That's not it. Actually the King dancing and being the center of a ballet was highly policital. It was done to impress the nobility and Louis XIV wanted to control the French culture under all its forms. This process is logical for a king who wanted to affirm its absolute power in the kingdom. It was not just a "hobby" for him.
So beautiful and elegant!! Damn, judging by this Louis XIV must've been a pretty good dancer! o_O
Very much so. amazing! I enjoy watching Versailles (to some extent), but no recognition of this on the series. The King (le Roi) was a talented danseur. guess they could not include everything. I think the series, as entertaining as it is, is dummied down.
Yelp
That's just plain amazing.
So much elegance!
ART in Every FRAME !
Lully incomparable..
Magistral !!
This is perfection
¡Qué belleza, por Dios...!
¡Qué perfección y gracia en los movimientos...!
¡Y la música...!
👍👍👍👌👌👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌹
Apollo! Bravo!
Sublime.
You're very welcome! The original manuscripts described very precise steps; the arm movements were 'improvised' according to certain codes of use of that period. Perhaps it would be instructive to post a video explaining the use of the original diagrams. They are fascinating!
I know that I am coming to this rather late, and it is unlikely that you would or ever will respond to this, though do you know where I could find instructions for the foot movements of this dance written in words? The original notation is - even with the help of an instructional guide - rather hard to swiftly understand.
, Mi Opinion Acerca De Este Periodo Unico¡ Es, La Re-fineza,.

Oui!
My loves time, my loves King
Magnifique!
Un hommage incomparable à ce Grand Dieu !

Impressionnant
il est fabuleux...
even if this is not the most energetic type of dancing, I believe the king still worked up a sweat. Especially wearing so much clothes. People back hardly cleaned themselvs. Hihihi. Piou! But I do really like the majestic style it has.
LET'S DANCE LULLY!!!
battement frappé during turns.. wow..
If this choreograhy was written for Louis XlV, he must have been good - very good!
magnifique à couper le souffle
Formidable! Lully!!!!

magnifique
C'est un miracle de beautè.
Any body know how to find Nick Nguyen's current performance schedules? Is he still performing? I am impressed by his ability as a baroque dancer.
I understand that he is retired. He has, as they say, hung up his ballet shoes.
@@captebbtide thanks. I guess it makes sense because I can't find anything current online. What a sublime dancer. I don't understand why someone with such beautiful grace and artistic perfection is nowhere to be found, not even as an instructor. I'm blown away every time I watch this video. It taps into the depths of my soul. He reminds me of what it means to be an enlightened being full of grace. Thanks for your response.
Magnifico!
These baroque dance clips are awesome!! Thank you for sharing these. I have a question for you.....Do you know how detailed the original manuscripts were? Do the dancers have to "fill in" gaps or improvise much ??Again, thanks for sharing these.
Deliciosamente sublime 🥰
Suprême élégance...
Sehr schöne Beinarbeit und tolle Sprünge.

I like the "pettycoat" breeches.
MDR !
MDR?
How was the choreography from the court of King Louis XIV preserved? Were there multiple drawings sketching out the entire dance?
davehshs There was actually a notation system--referred to these days as Beauchamp-Feuillet. I'm not sure which one of them actually invented it.
Beth .Garfinkel Thanks. Fascinating. I looked up some images. Does the notation give the finer points of the movements, or is it just a rough guide?
Beauchamp was commissioned to invent it and did so.
The notation gives all the steps, the path of the dance, all of the footwork. Every turn, step, and jump is notated. It also shows which steps go to which measure of music, and what relative speed those steps should be taken. The corresponding music is found at the top of the notation.
There is definitely room for interpretation within the notation, and as more groups seek to reconstruct these dances, more schools of thought come about as to how exactly the steps should (or could) be done. We base these interpretations off of the instructions in the manuals, contemporary writings of how things were done, and drawings and paintings from the period.
The port de bras is absent from the notation, with the exception of where partners join and release hands in partner dances. Within the instruction manuals are guides, both written description and drawings, for how to pair the arms with the steps and carriage of the body in general. For a solo like this, there is lots of room for personal interpretation for the arms.
The dancer is Nicolas Enguyen, now a married man with children, having retired from the stage. Were you perhaps fooled by the wig?
Soberbio , Lully !!
his dance style is really masculne.
Is this a choreography made for Louis XVI? If so, he must have been terrific.

CAPOLAVORO
Instead of feeding his people the king wanted money on lavish entertainments, wars and built Versailles and taxed them to do it. Not a sun king at all, he sawed the seed of the demise of the Grench monatchy

Je ne pense pas que vous pensiez.
On the whole too few ornaments, I think.
Very good except for 2 things: 1) His torso tilts too much and too often and 2) He raises his arms too high. The upper arms should never come higher than horizontal--which holds true until somewhere around 1800.
Those are court rules. This is theater dance. You can put your hands as high as you want, even if you're Louis the 14th.
@@FerDeAlmeida No you can't, because the fashions of the time were deliberately cut so as not to allow it.
