In episode 1 he makes the point that it’s not about how smart you are, but only about how much the players believe in you! You feed them and believe in those players then they will win games and run through walls for you. That is what makes a mentor great!
He got fired for good reason, he was openly and unapologetically racist towards one of his players. Then he tried to impersonate a lawyer so he can cover up all the incidents that happened at his program

In the extended scene, coach JB was nowhere near done but the players got fired up and were ready to run out of the tunnel early, so JB had to try to get it going again, it fizzled, so he finally just said fuck it and let them run out of the tunnel.

But he undermined the other coaches, berating them in front of the players, which is something that should never be done. Brown is a great coach when the team is doing well, but when they’re not, he completely unravel’s.
