Watching this documentary brings back the memory of Ken Saro-Wiwa. He laid down his life in his quest for a nonviolent campaign against environmental degradation of the land and waters of Niger-Delta region of Nigeria. Through his writings and T.V. productions in the 70s and 80s, he exposed the widespread corruption of the Nigerian government and the multinational petroleum industry. How can you exploit their land without giving back to the people? This is about corporate governance.
Born and bred in my beloved city of Lagos, had to leave home donkey years ago because of the same issues the so-called pirates are agitating for. Then, (and sadly, till now), the level of corruption was so glaring that, as a college graduate, there was no hope of finding a good paying job without bribing someone that knows someone. I wasn’t going to do that in my own land. Indeed, Nigeria is a great country with unlimited human and natural resources but its wealth has been (and still being) squandered by a few. It is truly sad.

how do you employ engineers from the local area? These guys need skilled workers and if they could find them in the local area they would. These oil companies are pulling out of the delta because it is not profitable for them to operate in a country where you have to pay heavy security costs on top of endless bribes and backhanders just to operate. The Nigerian government are making a fortune from this and yet you never once questioned their role in this. Is that because you are a racist?

Capital exists to create more capital, dow is booming, economy is doing great. Some people also see their living standards rise! From wealthy to wealthier. Those not owning capital? Starving, suffering, dying, while capital extracts their labor most cost efficiently. It is not slavery since they are not forced to work! And for their labor they are compensated, fairly (wouldnt work any cheaper) dollars and dimes

Pirates have nothing to do with land or nationality. This is what people don't understand. Rather than steal from companies and risk themselves, try to change the government and elect someone that will make fair contracts with international companies and build industry rather than siphon money from the country behind it's back. It's the government that is allowing it to happen in the first place. Half the reason these countries don't grow is because of that and that they also deflect the blame onto someone else.
