Emancipation does not mean to be free. It literally means to "free out of the hand" but does nothing for a people conditioned for inferiority and discrimination. Soldiers are debriefed when released from an enemy before being returned to general or military population. No forty acres or mules but plenty of legal and illegal violence, discrimination.

The look on Ben's face at 17:15 is priceless. It reminds me of watching a good movie back in the 1960s when things were very simple. People have good morals and respect each other. When adults were mature and responsible. This is what good TV shows were like back then, instead of the garbage shows like the Kardashians.

This is most definitely one of my most very favorite episodes of Bonanza, so very touching as well as endearing, brings tears to my eyes without fail, the other favorite, although very hard to watch is the one entitled The Crucible with Adam being the main lead, it's somewhat very hurtful to watch because of the horrible treatment Adam Cartwright endured at the hands of that horrible deceitful Peter Cane, ( Actor Lee Marvin) . Pernell did a magnificent job as did Lee Marvin and I have always felt that Pernell should have received an Emmy for that magnificent acting display, those 2 episodes are my most very favorite, especially when Adam was reunited with his family in the end. Pernell said himself that that the Crucible was his most very favorite the one that he truly enjoyed, 👏👏plus he also enjoyed the ones where he was allowed to display his musical abilities and I totally agree with him, but yeah this episode and the Crucible always pulls at my heartstrings, my tissue is always at hand whenever I watch either one of them. 👍💯🙂❤️👏

@n/a I recently saw on TH-cam a video made by Missouri University on slavery in Missouri where they were plentiful but used in smaller numbers for farming than in the large numbers on the southern plantations. I commented I wished the video had also gone more in to what happened to them after they were freed. Did they just stay on those farms anyway? Were they paid by the farmers and could the farmers afford to pay them or were they just fed for working on the farms? Did they just stay on the farms not having anywhere else to go but could now leave if they chose?

Lisa Lu is still alive age 94 and still cute. I was wondering if she was actually singing when she played the instrument and sang so fetchingly. Maybe because she has a daughter who is a successful musician playing traditional songs. Successful enough to have a bio at wiki. Landon seems quite attracted to her, see the scene under the birdcage when he puts her hand on his thigh. Who would't because she's as cute as it comes. Several phrases she momentarily reverts to an american accent, that must be difficult to do an entire role in Chinese emigrant English. Pernell bored as usual. Dan and Lorne super as usual.

Leaves his cash on the table. Doesn't clarify if he will win the horse or the girl... I'm betting that he wins the girl and doesn't like it.... Yes. :D Su Ling: Master manipulator. :D Bizarre that Joe mentions Hop Sing but we don't see him. "Hop Sing says her name means tinkling bell of virtue i" They don't explain why he is not there. If not there, how did Joe talk to him? Oh, there he is. They just didn't want him in the first scene where it would have made the most sense for him to be there. "She bottomless well of ignorance." Quite the sentence for an English learner. :D But it was great! 27:55 Why isn't Joe telling her to take the nursing job?! That would set her free. I expected that she would take the job and then the Chinese general would come looking for her but she is free now. Maybe he even sees that her work here is more important than coming home with him.... unlikely. :) Finally, she does decide to work with the doctor, but they ride with only Joe when a small "army" wants to kidnap her? Will the General listen, kill her or be killed? Kidnapping wouldn't properly end the story. I was thinking "Why is he still standing there after the general quickly dropped the white flag, which is surely the signal to fire... Oh, because they want Joe to get shot. Wouldn't it have been more compelling if the shot was fired as he dropped the flag and Joe was diving behind the rock? Why didn't the doctor take out the General before he could swing at Joe? He had the perfect positioning. They want Joe to be the unbelievable hero. Boring. Sure, they were following, but way back, too far to be of use. Could have had them battling the others while Joe battles the general. Perhaps that's too much concurrent action for the times. It was a strong beautiful storyline that was let down by a formulaic ending. Surely there doesn't need to be a final gunfight in every episode.
What do you think? How would you have ended it.
Wouldn't it have been far more compelling if Su Ling had joined the doctor and the final confrontation was between the general and the doctor, perhaps even the Chinese community? The doctor or other community leader could talk to the general with a shared understanding but the doctor or community leader schools the general that they are not in China anymore. The General could say that he controls his area in San Francisco. The leader replies, "Well, you're not in San Francisco either, you're in Virginia City, where all Chinese are free! Your ways are outdated and unacceptable here." The general could still decide to fight but there could be some comedy with the Cartwrights trying to fight but each time they turn to point a gun at a soldier, a local Chinese person takes him out first. At the end, the four Cartwrights all have bewildered embarrassed faces and then say something like "Well, I'm glad we could help!" as they chuckle. The doctor or community leader can then say. "You did the most important work. You showed Su Ling that she could be free."

Britain stopped America from importing slaves but could not stop the scientific breeding of Black slaves. America didn't like the free Chinese competing commercially with whites. They openly posted signs, labels, saying buy white made products. Eventually Congress passed the Asian Exclusion Act to keep Asians out of America. The civil war was about keeping the UNION intact not about ending slavery or human rights violations. Whites finally decided they had made a mistake with emancipation and Jim crow,ku Klux klan black codes were born to keep Blacks "in their place". Former slave owners were given monetary reparations, and stolen Native lands.Where did Ben Cartright get money to have all that former Native land? Whites from Europe were allowed to flood America ,given land and land grant college scholarships to teach them how to farm. Blacks and Natives were excluded. Many of the Cartright neighbors would have high openly racist views like a Trump or worse.

European "settlers" entered illegally without Native people's permission and refused to leave. Manifest Destiny to make America white from sea to shining sea. America treated the whole continent of Africa as one county.More Germans were allowed into America on a yearly basis than Africans and mixed semitic Arabs countries combined.
