Visiting the rapidly disappearing remnants of the ghost airport Athens Hellinikon what is striking is just how small the airport and terminal buildings were - they were situated down residential side streets. This made for great views though - and a lot of noise!
I lived in Kalamaki during the 70s and 80s. Planes would fly directly over our house when landing from the Kalamaki side of the runway. The planes flew approximately 100 - 200 ft above our house on approach to land. When the big planes, like the 747s and US military C-5s and C-141s would approach, we could tell by the sound of their engines what they were. We would run outside to the field next to our house to see them. We could actually see the passengers through the windows. The loudest planes were the Aeroflot VC-10s. Those were the ones with all 4 engines on the tail, two on each side. Supposedly it was because they added water to their fuel. Don't know how accurate that was though. The other thing I remember is after the planes would pass over our house, their wake created a noise in the air like rubber bands twanging. I remember one night in 1981, a 747 was landing while we were all in bed. The house would shake slightly when they flew over. But on this night, after the 747 passed over our house, the house continued shaking with increasing intensity. Just then my father ran into mine and my brother's bedroom to evacuate us from the house. Turns out just as the jumbo jet was passing over, an earthquake hit. It was 6.4 on the Richter. I'll never forget that night.
My mom’s apartment in Paleo Faliro was directly under the approach path landing south. I was the same way, you could tell a heavy was coming and I’d run out to the balcony as fast as I could. The craziest one I saw was in the summer of ‘95 when a TWA 747 must’ve had an engine failure on takeoff or something. It was north flow so most departures would turn out to the west well before the apartment. So I was surprised to hear the familiar rumble of a 747 getting closer. This big boy came over the apartment northbound LOWER than the arrivals usually did (usually around 600’). My guess was that it was less than 500’. Engines screaming at takeoff thrust every car alarm in south Athens was going off. 😂 I walk out onto that balcony nowadays and almost miss the noise. Almost.
The good old days of Athens. I loved that old airport. Such a nice vibe it gave you. Not this cold ass German creation we have now. Too bad you don't have Saudia. The Saudia Tristar was the best plane at Hellinikon in my opinion.
I stopped there in 1996. I was hoping to come there again soon and I'm so sad to learn it's closed down. I recall seeing the ocean, the mountains and light coloured buildings surrounding the airport as we landed. The airport terminal itself was totally 60s-70s decor and like stepping back in time !

Great old planes
Used to go up on the roof garden of the nearby hotel Emmantina, got some pretty amazing views as the hotel was just by the runway threshold
So did I my friend... So did I....
Same here.Spent many happy aircraft spotting holidays at the Emmantina Hotel.

Aeroflot had never flown the VC-10s!!! Probably you meant the Ilyushin 62 which looks like the VC-10! The VC-10 was a british made aircraft!
@@aigleroyal3941 Your exactly right. Thanks for the correction.
@@futuresick100 That said British Airways did use VC-10s to Athens in the late 1970s on occasion! Even a 747

I agree with you. The new airport may be bigger and more safe but they did not do anything for view points
