Update: The xTool D1 now supports Lightburn which was my biggest negative from the machine. Overall this is my favorite laser diode even at a higher price point than others.
@@JamesGames. its more like 2 different licenses, which open up support to DSP based or Gcode based machines. For the D1 one though you'll want the Gcode version.
I agree I am glad lightburn is now supported. It's much like my die cutting software from silhouette of America but I don't need to transfer from one to the other.
Your review video is one of the videos I used before deciding to order this laser. I'm in love as it gives me the detailing I cannot do with my electronic die cutting machines.
Hey Brandon, Brandon here! I did a lot of research on lasers and your video ultimately sold me on it so I ordered one and used your coupon code and saved a lot of money which was super helpful! Thank you so much for such a great review!
My biggest concern was that it didn't run Lightburn, but now it does. Fantastic review! I'd been waffling between the OLM2Pro and the XTool D1. I just ordered the XTool!
Thanks for the review. I am waiting for mine to be delivered and I was a little worried of the quality, so you straightened me out. I did accidentally buy the 5W version but hopefully it'll do what I need, which is just destroy my enemies through engraving and cutting paper and cardboard.
Just to be clear this review wasn't sponsored in the sense I got paid to produce the review. I was given the product for free for review but xTool didn't review the video once it went out and this is my honest opinion.
I think it would be very informative if you gave the engrave/cut times. I've owned a diode and co2 laser now and I think some people would find it helpful to know how long it takes to achieve a finished product. I'm not In the market for another one currently, I'm working more with plasma, but a coworker talked about this so I thought I'd check it out. Seems pretty nice and the creature comforts seem really nice specifically the integrated focusing jig.
I think you are the coolest!! 😎 Thank you so very much for all that you do! 😊 Thank you for creating videos sharing everything that you know, or learned thru trial, and error. It will definitely help a new beginner like me.
I am using a Long Mill CNC router to run my laser. In my enclosure I am running a bathroom fan since it can be ducted out of the garage when running the laser.
I need a laser to permanently apply text to stainless steel and brass coupons, none larger than 100mm. There will be hundreds of them, each different. The stainless will need to withstand permanent exposure to the harshest sun and wind for years at a time. When you say this machine will mark metal, does that mean it will be satisfactory for my needs or do I need to think fiber lasers?
Any diode laser will as you say, mark on stainless steel, not truly engrave the metal. Having said that, yes the mark is permanent. I expect it will do what you ask of it right out of the box. However, if you really want to ensure a dark solid permanent mark, I suggest you use a laser marking spray. (Search Amazon) it is expensive at about $60 for a 12 oz spray can, but in your case I think it will be more than work it.
I am impressed! I’ve been building and testing commercial/industrial laser engravers for the past 10+ years now and they cost a ton. For the price, size of diode and material being used here, this is a great deal. Gonna have to pick one up and try it out.
When cutting plywood with a 10W machine like this, what is better - setting it to a higher power and doing fewer passes, or going for a lower power with more passes?
A good fix for the cable is to loop a couple of thin rubber bands around it and attach the other end of the rubber band to a weight. It works perfectly.
watched several of you videos, but not one on engraving acrylic. I know you have to have something underneath the acrylic so the lazer does not just pass through. My question is some acrylic blanks have colored protective coverings, some blue heavy plastic and some a brown cardboard looking color. If you just remove one side of the of the covering are those backing colors solid enough to keep the lazer from passing through?
@Make or Break Shop Just as a heads up, I received a promotion for an extra $80 off that stacked with the "back to school" promo xTool has that ends tomorrow. I picked up a 10 watt D1 pro for just $580 plus tax. Seems like a great deal for anyone who has been on the fence, so I figured I'd put this out there before it's gone. PS I used your affiliate link because your channel's quality is unmatched for all things laser.
Most people will mod an air assist with a cooper tube attached to the side of the laser head that then attaches to rubber tubbing and finally a compressor. So the air doesn't go through the actual laser module is just is coming in from the side.
Can this machine cut out thinner acrylic? I make jewelry with shrinky dinks but I've been thinking about upgrading to acrylic and getting this machine.
Thank you! So what difference would I notice with a 5W vs 10W. How does the lower power play out in use? It is speed or thickness of material it can cut? And, how hard is it to make a 2nd pass at a material to cut it? Does it still cut pretty clean?
I ordered the 5w as well. It's on the way and I was also worried about how big of a differences would be. What did you find out after using it? Big deal, or no? Thank you
Can a diode laser cut through clear acrylic? I've seen people paint them black to do the etching and then just remove the paint, would this work with cutting all the way through?
The sample metal dog tag included in the package lasered like a champ. But I yet to find another uncoated metal that will do the same? What am I doing wrong? There's a setting for stainless steel, but it doesn't do anything on metal blanks.
I just put mine together today 10W with the rotary and downloaded Laserbox & LightBurn on my MacBook Air and it cant find my laser, I hooked up my Wife's HP laptop and it worked and printed. Do you have any ideas why my mac won't find it ?
What can you tell me about the xTool D1 36w Higher Accuracy Laser Engraver, 5w-7.5w Laser Cutter and Engraver Machine, Laser Engraving Machine Support LightBurn, Laser Engraver for Wood and Metal, Vinyl, Acrylic, Paper(17"x15.98") , listed on Amazon? Thanks
all these open lazers are so versatile on what you can lazer, but i worry about light leakage and eye damage to people, children and animals in the room without glasses. Do you recommend building an enclosed box?
thank you for you detailed review. it really helped me operate my 1st xtool. any tips how to clean the orange box? accumulating black build up. thanks!!

I've watc hed a lot of your videos, they are great! How does this xtoll d1 10 watt stack up against Sculpfun s10? I've tried browsing your site for comparison.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Atomstack X7 Pro. It seems to use the same laser module as this one. It is a more traditional extruded aluminum chassis but that allows for easy future work area expansion.
Agree. I already own the Atomstack M50 laser module retrofitted to an earlier A5 20W and I haven't done much at all with it but I did cut 3/8 solid Poplar fairly fast. But I really don't do much cutting at all. But it is definitely a hotter laser for sure.
I can see this engraver setting in my garage in the near future. With that being said I am starting from scratch and I currently do not own a laptop. Can you recommend a particular laptop that works well with this engraver? I have owned Dell, HP's, iPads, etc over the years if that helps. I would prefer to spend any extra money I have on goodies for the engraver, but I want a laptop that will work well with the engraver without a lot of fuss. Thank you for your time and Thank You for posting this video. Your feedback is what I used to determine which engraver I want.
I want to make a simple logo coin to inset into my wood turnings. I have used purchased metal coins before but they get expensive. My plan is to engrave a metal disc (maybe a dog tag material) or maybe a more elegant disc like stainless steel or brass. My logo is not complex and I have it in a jpg or other formats. Can this machine do what I'm thinking? I don't want to invest $800 only to be disappointed. My coins are about 20mm in diameter.
Yeh the K40 is probably the most interesting comparison. The biggest benefit you get going the K40 route is you move from diode to CO2 which means you get WAY more power (40W vs 10W). But you also get all the drawbacks in that is more heavy, less portable, takes up more space, needs water/compressor attached and has a much smaller work area. It really depends on the types of stuff you want to make. If you mostly want to do engraving that I would stick with the D1 or something from Ortur. If you really want to laser cut, then a CO2 machine is going to be your best bet.
I'm trying to find videos on the usage before my machine I ordered arrives, (Should not be hard, considering it hasn't even been mailed yet-over a week later!) and one I can't seem to find is how to make sure it starts where I want it to and stays on the board. Is the software coming with the tool able to identify printing/cutting surfaces edges, etc...?
Their software is actually pretty good, you can do pretty much everything you need. The design tools are pretty simple so if you mostly importing images it shouldn’t be a huge deal. The big thing is just flexibility, other software has features you might want down the road so having the option to use it would be nice
