- 1972/73 European Cup winners Ajax faced AC Milan, 1973 Cup Winners' Cup winners, in the first ever UEFA-approved Super Cup final. Johan Cruyff had already moved to Barcelona at the time, but that didn't stop Ajax from trumping the Italians - after losing 1:0 in the first leg they had managed to score 6 uncontested goals in the second one. That AC Milan side was quite impressive - featuring Gianni Rivera, Romeo Benetti and Karl-Heinz Schnellinger, but they were no match for the Dutch totaalvoetball on that night.
Johan Neeskens had proved himself invaluable to Ajax success - constantly winning the ball in midfield, covering his defenders and making dangerous runs into the box, one of which have ended with a brilliant goal.
