I've been wheeling mine for 3 years now. It's old for an RC toy. Now the Gen 9 is out, with a better front axle, less overhang, and 2 speeds! ... But I love my Gen 8, even after 3 years. So instead I'm buying all the parts needed to bring my 8 up to Gen 9 specs, while keeping it's great long wheelbase and beautiful purple body. Gen 8 still rocks.
I've made upgrades with my Gen8 and I am totally happy with it now. I will just buy the body from Gen8 Axe Edition and swap them out. I've installed the Axe Hobbywing 550 powerplant and it works amazing. Thank you for the video.
Honestly the best RC thing I’ve ever bought. It has been through hell and back. Whole underside is scratched to oblivion and a few things needed some maintenance but otherwise still stock. I am absolutely astounded. Has done a 3s 15 minute straight run jumping down stairs down a hillside hike trail and tanked it like a beast. Cannot recommend highly enough

It is funny that I just race tuned my Element Ecto but still my stock Gen 8, with just better tires and servo, beats the Ecto. It is mind boggling, and I cannot tell what it is that makes my Gen 8 perform like that.
I've addressed most of the shortcomings of the stock Gen8 as follows: 1. brand new axles, transmission, and transfer case from an AXE Edition purchased from ebay 2. Power HD 25kg coreless servo with metal gears 3. Redcat steel CV main driveshafts and aluminum transfer case driveshaft 4. Dual density foam for the stock tires 5. flat skid plate and battery tray from an AXE are on the way to me 6. Fly Sky GT-5 radio set is on the way The primary reason for the drive train upgrade is that I couldn't get the grub screws out of any of the driveshafts when I tried replacing the plastic driveshafts with the steel CV driveshafts. I actually bent a hardened steel hex wrench.
Another thing is the body Is the biggest and widest out of most crawlers it gets caught on a lot of things pushing in the bumpers and replacing the rock sliders helps but it doesn’t help the body getting Scratched on narrow places but it’s a beast I’m mostly stock other than Tires I got the deep woods best tires for all around It competes with most other tire companies wet terrain is there something else for performance wise on budget I’m really looking for performance wise like bump steer better stability and flex and more weight what would you recommend out of all the crawler guys I’m pretty low on the comp list
I've got a v2 that out performs my buddies fully done up comp rigs all I did was pull the shock springs and added heavy beadlocks still rockin the iroks too
New to the the channel. Love the content you put out for the community. Me and my son are new to the rc crawlers as a hobby. We are looking at spending about $ 500.ea on crawlers. Everyone seems to have an opinion based on personal preference. I have to ask based off you personal knowledge and experience what would you say would be your top 3 crawlers to buy at that price point?
Surprised you didn’t use the poor suspension geometry (bump-steer & the bound-dive to the left) as a negative point? I always enjoy watching your videos anyways. Good, fair, honest points! 👍
Yes I agree. In his first video on the gen 8 he hits on this but now not one mention of it. At first all his reviews were spot on, now I believe he is being kind. That front axle geometry is by far more serious then the Velcro on the body or any of the things mentioned here.
hello,.. in your opinion between this redcat gen.8v2 and the axial base camp ,.. what will be the best base ??? much of its performance,..very smooth and good quality in general., or if there is a better or identical model in the same price range 400 to 450 euros,... thanks!
Hello I just got a Redcat Gen 8 and I was wondering what radio you use this particular rc rock crawler.....Do you have to change out the reservoir when a different radio?
Man, I'm so torn on this thing. I'm looking for my first crawler to get into the Hobby, and I absolutely love the way this thing looks. Been doing research, and the more videos I watch, the more confused about it I am, LOL. Trx4 sport seems cool, I just hate the looks. I know that's superficial, but hey it matters. This thing sounds perfect, but it looks like it has a few inherent weaknesses when it comes to crawling. That's specifically what I want to do, so I guess I should look for something better at that. Then again, this thing is currently on sale for 269, and that seems like a fantastic price point. Next best thing is TRX4 Sport at 349, not sure it's worth an extra 80 bucks?
Looks are usually 60% of the decision, just like buying full-sized cars. Wait for our full review on this and you can make a wise choice. We'll also have a bunch of video to help this Axial perform very well.
@@RCReviewChannel thank you for the response! It doesn't help that I'm big into classic trucks, so seeing the Scout body, and the TRX Blazer and Bronco bodies have me super excited, haha. These are all trucks that I would love to own in real life.
What I do is I was it with water and dry it with a cloth and then a blower and then a compressor. For the tires, I drilled two matchstick sized holes on opposite ends of each tire and spin the tires with the motor until all the water is out. WD 40 is a good idea on all the metal moving parts.
I used it for the first ride just to try it out and then went with my fully programmable Absima CR4T Ultimate. It is not that bad actually and comes with a waterproof receiver. The controls are complex enough for a beginner, but I personally miss endpoint adjustment at least on the steering. It has dual-rate for the steering, throttle and steering trim and throttle and steering reverse. It's a bit difficult to drive slowly with it, but that also has to do with the ESC and motor. It needs quite a bit of throttle to start going and you can easily pull the throttle too far and have a rough start.
Just looking at the Gen 8 & the Defender there isn’t that much difference in the bodies. With the roof rack I would think the Defender would be the top heaviest of the two. BTW another great 5x5 hope the SCX10-3 is on your list for doing a 5x5

That's not how you help steering, you need to buy a good servo the transmitter isn't going to make it turn better. Also the stock trx4 sport transmitter you are talking about is worse that the stock redcat one.
Seeing how I can get a brushless motor ESC and Servo probably for under $150 I'll just buy the base model and put those few components into it and why do I need a great radio it's not like I'm racing it and I'm going to be 50 yards away from my RC

The AXE skid plate and battery tray arrived today and I got them installed. Just waiting for the GT-5 radio to finish the upgrade.
The trick you getting grub screws out is heat, use a little torch or something to get it up and it will come right out no matter how tight its is.
