    I bought a Davis tent a few years ago and it's been excellent.

    Nice to see.
    If you had a good spot to put it up, with the tarp and fly, I think you could live in that tent for an extended period. With your heater/stove installed it becomes a real 4 season proposition.
    Looking forward to you testing it all out next winter!

    Wow... we just bought the same tent. Same size as well. I have a large family so we needed to room. Looking to make a new family tradition. I was struggling with which brand of ten to go with and finally decided on this one. I think I'll be glad we did. We just got it but don't have the frame yet and haven't had time to attempt setting it up. So I'm really excited! Thanks for the video! 👍🏼😊
    Ps. Any suggestions or insight would be really appreciated!

      Buy some galvanized tent stakes for the tent. You can use the ones they send you for the ropes, but they will rust (keep the rust off of the tent). It has been a great tent so far. We just used it over Thanksgiving. The kids loved it.

      John Harmon - Cold Creek Works its a 16x20, wood stove, 3 screen windows, screen door (front only), Colorado Door/Storm Flap. Much like yours. My in-laws have one and so I got to 'try it before i buy it' a couple years ago hunting. We opted for the tent bag, large organizer bin (to put tent bag in), rain fly, stove fire matt, the 'Peak', floor with zippered cut out.
      Much like you it is mostly for emergency preparedness. When we used my in-laws tent we had 7 adults (with cots) and plenty of room on each side. Such a great tent, they have used it for many years and can't speak highly enough about Davis Tent.
      Next I need to order a smaller tent for the separate kitchen. That might be in a year or two.
      Love your videos, keep up the great work. I've been watching your torchmate videos and how to draw in cad. They are very helpful. I'm hoping to get a 4x4 table soon.

    Do you feel like 16x20 is the right size for your family? Would 16x24 be overkill for a family of 7?

    • @JohnHarmon
      @JohnHarmon  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel like it is a good size for my family. I don't think I would go any bigger. It is harder to heat. If I were to do it again I would just add a lot more windows for air ventilation options (particularly in the summer months). I personally think it is a good size for 7 people.

    I have had a 16'X20' Davis tent for 10 years now and every year it is up at least 1 month at hunting camp on the north shore of lake superior it has been through 20" snow storms and 100 mph winds I do have a 2" frame that was purchased from King Canopy and when we leave for any length of time we support between rafters with a wooden pole wedged in. Basically I have had 2 grommets pull out by the door and a small rip same area,had it patched at a local canvas shop in Savage MN. I have had to chop out the stakes on the ropes because the ground was frozen 4" deep by Thanksgiving. Great tent will last for many years.

    • @JohnHarmon
      @JohnHarmon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also have a family of 6. You could easily sleep 8 or more with a stove. Without a stove we have put about 18 young women in it (girls camp). They each had about 2' of space. A little tight (no stove)

    Hey John, great video! It really helped us to make a decision. We are buying for emergency preparedness also and have 4 little kids so this seemed to be a good fit. I'm just curious, now that you've had it for a little bit, is there anything you'd do differently? We are ordering the 16x20, took your advice and added a few extra windows, we have 5 rafters (I noticed you had 6), and got a few organizers. Do you feel the floor is sealed enough? I am worried about mice or spiders getting in.

    • @JohnHarmon
      @JohnHarmon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. If I were to do it again I would possibly make it slightly smaller (putting my kids in bunks) so that the heater can warm a smaller area, but I haven't used the tent in the cold yet.... so I can't say that would be an issue. I have used it twice (during warmer weather) and have liked it. I like the room that it has. Knowing what I know now, I would have had them make the floor 1-2' bigger in each direction so I could roll it up the edges of the tent a few inches, but I am not really worried about it. For long term, you just put some dirt on the sod cloth and that will do a pretty good job at sealing out critters..... You can't do that to the doors so much, so a determined critter will probably easily be able to find a way in.

    I'm concerned with the length of the poles that go from the side wall to the ridge and fitting them in my vehicle for transport. I'm interested in a 16 foot wide tent. Can you tell me how long you had to cut those?

    • @JohnHarmon
      @JohnHarmon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roughly 9' to 9'2" I believe. Those are the longest of all of the poles.

      I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not. Family of 6. We have used it a few times, and I would even say it is almost too big.

    You'll want to tuck the tarp completely under the edges of the tent. Otherwise you'll have water pooling under the tent when the rain hits the exposed tarp and runs under. If you want a tarp outside under the covered area, use a separate tarp and tuck the one edge under the tarp that you have under the tent so it drains under the tent tarp into the grass.

    I’m ordering a 16x24 with 6’ sidewalls from another company. Going to build a wood frame with ridge beam 3x12 hardwood. Putting on property I bought on a lake with water access only.
