    Few more tips~
    ° After pruning your ficus don't keep in direct sun whether root or shoot pruning it is.
    ° shoot prune it in the spring bc after that the growing season will start. Don't prune it in the winters as the new shoots will be produced and they can't survive winters
    ° root prune them in the fall don't prune the larger roots (I pruned the roots of my ficus upto 90% including the tap roots and still it is surviving)
    I have a ficus religiosa with multiple trunks and heavy canopy

    This was an informative video. I was gifted a ficus retusa at the start of this year, and it has been somehow growing even though I only water and it doesn’t get direct sunlight. But the part about pruning and repotting when the roots circle was useful to know. I don’t know much about plant care but I do enjoy watching my ficus grow.

    I live in texas where summers can get really hot (up to 100 degrees F or 38 C) is this too hot to keep the focus tree outdoors?

    • @bonsaiempire
      @bonsaiempire  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that should be fine - but make sure they dont dry out! Actually, Ficus like humidity so the Texas heat isn't optimal at all. Ideally, pick species that work in your local environment!

    The Ficus retusa and Tiger bark are not separate species - they are the same thing. Full name is Ficus Microcarpa Retusa aka Tiger Bark Ficus.

    • @chuschusco
      @chuschusco 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Son Ficus microcarpa.
      El Ficus retusa es en realidad otra especie de ficus tropical de grandes hojas lanceoladas que no existe a la venta. Ficus microcarpa no es sinónimo de F. retusa, son especies distintas. Cualquier guía botánica especializada en ficus, si se busca Ficus microcarpa L. f., indica que no está bien utilizado por otros autores como sinónimo el nombre de F. retusa (Ficus retusa auct. non _ _ _ _, Ficus retusa auct. nec _ _ _ _).
      Actualmente el nombre de "ficus retusa", refiriéndose a Ficus microcarpa L. f., es una denominación comercial errónea muy extendida en viveros de plantas ornamentales.
      Además, hasta en la propia Wikipedia ya se indica que F. microcarpa "con frecuencia se lo identifica erróneamente como F. retusa o F. nitida"., de forma muy acertada en este caso.
      ¡Un saludo!

    I was bought what I think is a Ficus Bonsai tree as a gift but unfortunately it appeared Dead on Arrival.
    A couple of years later it still looks dead with a lot of brown and crispy leaves but it doesn't drop them so I think it is alive - I have read they can often be wrongly assumed dead.
    Mine has never looked alive :(
    I'm thinking I should repot it into better quality soil, leave it in a spot that is bright but not in direct sunlight perhaps even under a Bell Cloche/humidity tent for a while.
    Good ideas to get it back to looking healthy?

      Ficus benjamina is very common, great for bonsai and yes these guidelines all apply to Ficus benjamina, retusa, etc. A shallow pot looks nice on established bonsai, but if your goal is to develop you need growth and often that means a bigger pot. I follow the watering schedule quite strictly but I have recently seen that the top layer of the soil has a white small bubble texture layer, as if fog was on it. What does this mean?? Also, I do not have any product to add to the bonsai, is it recommended?
    Thank you in advance for any kind of information.

    • @bonsaiempire
      @bonsaiempire  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure to water on observation, not on a schedule. Winter means the tree will slow down its growth and hence, less water is needed. A liquid fertilizer would be good to apply.

    • @NickCADA
      @NickCADA 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I normally do is I water my ficus with water from a water bottle like Kirkland or Nestlé water, I allow the water to set at room temperature, never ice cube cold or as warm as water for coffee or tea, I don’t use any speciality watering can either, I simply use the bottle. If possible while watering it make sure to make a bowl or plate underneath that way if any dirt comes out you can put it directly inside of your bonsai again.

    • @NickCADA
      @NickCADA 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way if you go with placing your bonsai inside of the sink method it’ll most likely be a waste of time on your part, for me I found that the way I mentioned above was definitely faster and easier.

      Well, it is a tropical plant - so ideally you'd keep them a bit warmer. They will grow stronger. But good to hear you keep them healthy at lower temperatures. What do you do when it freezes?

      @@bonsaiempire thank you for your reply! I have been having ficuses for many years. In the past, when I was living in Greece, I had some big plants as outdoor plants in my balcony. The few times I would have temperatures below zero, I would take them inside the house, usually overnight, sometimes for a few days. Now I live in Sweden and for the last few years I have ficuses as indoor plants. Still, most of them I take outside for the summer since they seem to like it (it seems to improve their health) and some of them I leave outside until minimum temperature is around 5C. I know they can tolerate even lower temperatures but I avoid stressing them more than this so that they are not shocked by the change when moved.

      Yes and no as a bonsai is the art of keeping an otherwise huge tree into a smaller one that we can keep to size by doing the stuff mentioned in this video .

    Hi, I would need some help with my Ficus Retusa.
    What kind of soil mix do you suggest for a Ficus retusa Bonsi? I recently bought it from a store and was thinking about repotting it properly with a good mix.
    Had a very hard time finding any suggestions online for the retusa specifically.
    Thank you in advance

    Hii, a beginner here!
    I recently bought a ficus bonsai. But i do have a question about the direct sunlight does it also include the full sun? because i keep the bonsai in my room and the sun shines directly into my room from about 11 o'clock to sundown, and i am afraid it is going to die because the heat. can anybody help me with this? The temp. in my room will go from about 15 to 28 sometimes and in the summer maybe above 30 with full sun on my window. Thanks in advance!!

      Direct sunlight at a window (with your tree indoors) is totally fine. More light really is better for the Ficus! But be careful not to let the tree dry out on a hot day.

    you said I have to watering the bonsai normally like other plants too, but on other platforms the bonsai experts say you have to put the bonsai into a waterbath for 10 minutes every week and shouldn't water it normally like other plants... ?

    • @bonsaiempire
      @bonsaiempire  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Submerging is not something I'd recommend - water it when the soil becomes slightly dry (but never let it dry out).

      We'll post a video about that soon - basically we use a mixture of Akadama, Pumice and Lava rock in equal parts.
