Idk why so many people question why Sonic uses a hoverboard in this game, like isn't it obvious? For "fun". Just because he can run anywhere doesn't mean he has to, if he's presented with a piece of technology that not only moves fast but let's him hover around and do cool tricks and generally just play around in the air, why WOULDN'T he use the hoverboard? Just because he doesn't need it, it's no real reason for him not to use it. I think the logic behind it is similar as to why Sonic isn't running laps around Mario in the Olympic games, in theory he COULD do that, but where's the fun in that?
Honestly yes the for fun logic 100% applies to hoverboards, however not getting another footrace game in leu of sonic R is baffling, especially when you see what we get instead (boring cars that turn left and right and sometimes go up and down.)

My headcannon for the Gmod segment is that everyone but Sonic, and spoiler one other, is affected by the strange pocket dimension they got sucked in. -Jet got shrunk smaller -Wave is blind (hence why she wanders aimlessly.) -Tails who body is on shambles like a Mr potato head. -Knuckles has a boneless neck -And Storm, is pretty self explanatory.
